Don’t Forget… (VTPackfan’s Preview Added 5:15)

There is a basketball game tonight. I will be there, as will Jeff. Feel free to use this as a game thread. I will have my blackberry, and might post in the comments from the arena.

I am nervous Delaware State could beat us – they are supposedly in contention in the MEAC, and the good MEAC team has been a pesky NCAAT out in recent years. Regardless, I look forward to seeing Gavin Grant’s one-man show!

UPDATE: VTPackfan sent in the following fantastic game preview, for which we thank him profusely:

Pace and Points needed vs. Deleware St.

In a good tune up for friday nights game vs. the Wolfpack of NC State, the Hornets of Delaware State saw first hand what points in the paint and a quality big man can do to their winning ambitions. The MEAC regular season champions come into this season with hopes of erasing last years conference tourney upset loss to Hampton, and a chance to play in the NCAA’s after last years NIT run. With all but one starter back and a 6′ 6″ swingman transfer for Univ. of Cincinnati, their chances will rest in the balance of attack their back court can churn out. With only one starter over 6’6″, problems will arise in the battles in the paint. Take tuesday nights loss to #4 Pitt as exhibit A. They had their hands full of seven foot Pitt center Aaron Gray all night and it still wasn’t enough to slow him down, though they were able to cut the lead to single digits early in the second half. Pitts 57% percent shooting, mostly done in and around the paint allowed this game to never become in jeopardy. The Hornets have what it takes due to transfer Blunt, who averaged 5 points a game his freshman year for Cincinatti, and the stellar play of a PG named Shine.

New Wolfpack coach Sidney Lowe will have his hands full getting his men to play tight defense on the Hornet perimeter play and should expect the Hornets to put up a pretty big number against his work in progress team, especially if they hit their threes at a more consitent rate then they did at Pitt (7-37, ouch!). Also look for Lowes squad to try and wipe the glass clean with Mcauley and Costeners size edge, especially on the defensive end. One of Lowes first arrangements with his new team was to pick up the tempo over what they had experienced over the past years, and theres no better way to implement that policy then off a defensive rebound. It will be a true test of whether Lowe wants to play up tempo against a guard oriented team of if he trys to slow it down to use the size mis-match down low and rest his short bench. We will see.

any win at this stage has merit—the team needs to build confidence while they develop collective competence—in every game we need to ask three questions—are we improving?—this will be a hard one to assess once the acc season begins—is the staff getting the most out of the group that we have on the roster?—is the team unified and are they enjoying playing together—if we can assess these three as affirmative at the conclusion of the season—we will be well on our way to a great future with coach lowe

Amazing how negative the N&O’s take on the game was. Compare their opening paragraphs to the FayObserver’s (below). You have to read 9 paragraphs into the N&O article before they say anything positive. Those Tarhole journalism grads are getting nervous already.

    Wolfpack dunks Hornets

    By Dan Wiederer
    Staff writer

RALEIGH — Summoned to the bench with foul trouble for a four-minute stretch of the first half Friday night, Gavin Grant was on a mission when he finally returned to the floor.

“Let’s just say I had some energy to release, he said.

Like a hyper puppy taken off its leash, the N.C. State forward went crazy in the final 1:52 of the first half, staging his own personal dunk show.

    Now compare to N&O:

    Chip Alexander, Staff Writer
RALEIGH – There probably is no such thing as a stress-free game for a coach, as N.C. State’s Sidney Lowe was the first to attest Friday night.
But after the 40-minute-long tension of the Wolfpack’s opener — a white-knuckler not decided until the final seconds — a 63-43 victory over Delaware State at the RBC Center came off being, well, almost a yawner.

A “yawner”? Did anyone at the game feel like it was a yawner?

Not a yawner by any stretch – it was a very fun game to watch (until the last 12 minutes). The crowd was certainly into it.

The Tarhole/Dookie BIAS is truly incredible! Let’s just remain the underdog. Even with folks saying we had a let-down in the last 12 minutes, we still won by 20 when our biggest lead had only been 24, right? Not like the droughts we’ve had before where we go from a 16 point lead to a 3 point lead in 4 minutes! Anyway, it sounds as though it was a great 2nd game for Coach Lowe and the Pack! The main thing is it sounds like there is a great attitude among the players and coaches, and that they’re having FUN!!

My feeling is that from what I heard on the radio, which was just the first half, but if everyone in the RBC had closed their eyes for a minute and the teams had switched uniforms, it could have been easy to imagine that Delaware State was the Wolfpack of old, and we were on the other end of a twenty point difference.

We’re making headway with every game and it’s fun and exciting basketball against Wolford and Delaware State, but can we show a little restraint with the NCAA/NIT tournament talk. It’s totally foolish at this point, and it’s only setting the team, along with part time fan’s expectations, up for a fall.

We will not be the embarrassment that so many gloom and doomers were saying before they knew anything about anything. But we will fall, and struggle, and lose, and play hard, and it will be a team that we can take pride in, and one that will give us hope for the future.

To bash an earlier myth, a vast majority of the lower level seats are owned by private citizens and/or small business owners so the big corporate myth is again debunked. It is time to quit parroting that line. If lower level LTR owners weren’t there then that is their choice. Probably a lot of the big donors were at the Alumni center dedication but Wendell Murphy was at the game. So there.

We actually shot over 50%. What a great thing to see, way to go Sid and team!

And I thought we had to shoot 30% and fire 3’s all day long, thought that was a Constitutional amendment.

Not that it matters, but ASU is now 1-2, with losses to Northern Arizona and Portland State and a victory over perennial Division II power Cal State San Bernardino. Next up: Mighty San Jose State on Tuesday night.

Before everyone starts bashing our attendance. For our first game the only team in the ACC that pulled in more attendance for their first game was Virginia and thats because they were playing a top 25 team in Arizona. We had more attendance in the last game than any team in the ACC for their second game. Our attendance is actually very good compared to the rest of the ACC.
