Don’t Forget… (VTPackfan’s Preview Added 5:15)

There is a basketball game tonight. I will be there, as will Jeff. Feel free to use this as a game thread. I will have my blackberry, and might post in the comments from the arena.

I am nervous Delaware State could beat us – they are supposedly in contention in the MEAC, and the good MEAC team has been a pesky NCAAT out in recent years. Regardless, I look forward to seeing Gavin Grant’s one-man show!

UPDATE: VTPackfan sent in the following fantastic game preview, for which we thank him profusely:

Pace and Points needed vs. Deleware St.

In a good tune up for friday nights game vs. the Wolfpack of NC State, the Hornets of Delaware State saw first hand what points in the paint and a quality big man can do to their winning ambitions. The MEAC regular season champions come into this season with hopes of erasing last years conference tourney upset loss to Hampton, and a chance to play in the NCAA’s after last years NIT run. With all but one starter back and a 6′ 6″ swingman transfer for Univ. of Cincinnati, their chances will rest in the balance of attack their back court can churn out. With only one starter over 6’6″, problems will arise in the battles in the paint. Take tuesday nights loss to #4 Pitt as exhibit A. They had their hands full of seven foot Pitt center Aaron Gray all night and it still wasn’t enough to slow him down, though they were able to cut the lead to single digits early in the second half. Pitts 57% percent shooting, mostly done in and around the paint allowed this game to never become in jeopardy. The Hornets have what it takes due to transfer Blunt, who averaged 5 points a game his freshman year for Cincinatti, and the stellar play of a PG named Shine.

New Wolfpack coach Sidney Lowe will have his hands full getting his men to play tight defense on the Hornet perimeter play and should expect the Hornets to put up a pretty big number against his work in progress team, especially if they hit their threes at a more consitent rate then they did at Pitt (7-37, ouch!). Also look for Lowes squad to try and wipe the glass clean with Mcauley and Costeners size edge, especially on the defensive end. One of Lowes first arrangements with his new team was to pick up the tempo over what they had experienced over the past years, and theres no better way to implement that policy then off a defensive rebound. It will be a true test of whether Lowe wants to play up tempo against a guard oriented team of if he trys to slow it down to use the size mis-match down low and rest his short bench. We will see.

Costner been strong in every aspect of the game tonight.

Starters back on floor together with 4:45 in game with score 55-39

    Continue to be sloppy.

McCauley getting some mop up points

Defense is simply bad right now.

    Lead cut to 57-43

2nd half has not been pretty.

  2. BJD95 11/17/2006 at 10:42 PM #

The first 28 minutes were beautiful, though.

  3. redfred2 11/17/2006 at 10:42 PM #

    Jamie, Thanks!

  4. Graywolf1 11/17/2006 at 10:43 PM #

More focus and more intensity on defense…that’s what has happened…

Something tells me we will not have a problem with this in a couple of weeks…or we’ll be hating life… Play hard, and I think everyone will accept that…

Dunk by Fells with a foul!!!! 59-43 Pack!!! 3:07 left.

  5. Jamie 11/17/2006 at 10:45 PM #

Redfred, no prob. Not as good as being there, but it will do.

  6. StateFans 11/17/2006 at 10:46 PM #

Another incredible fast break started by a geat pass and ending with a dunk.

    Fells fouled on great dunk.

Starters exerting dominance we saw earlier in the game.

Coster with great post move. 20 pts and 6 rebs

Pack’s FTs a little shaky tonight

Nice pass by Costner to Atsur

Allow me to re-iterate team chemistry

Big Lew off bench to score table

Would be there, but the school decided to have another doubleheader tonight, and I am not talking about the women.

The dedication of the Park Alumni Center is tonight, and there is a black tie reception for donors to the building.

Very poor planning, and honestly, I don’t know which was on the calendar first, hoops or the gala.

This crap is really starting to bother me. Our University Administration is horrible. They can’t even coordinate simple scheduling, let alone put together simple marketing. Add this to the disenfranchisement of Students, Greek Life and Alumni it’s getting ridiculous. We need to step up to the Board of Trustees and let our voices be heard.

Sorry I tried to copy Pack Laddie’s comments above to make mine more relevant. I didn’t mean to confuse or misinterpret comments. Here is my response. Sorry Laddie.

Well, that’s two down. It’s starting to look like a barber shop around here.

By the way, I enjoyed listening (from Charlotte) to the game. It was very exciting. I am looking forward to following the team this year. I am really excited about the team, our coach and recruiting. Good stuff.

Wait a minute, “JAMIE”, is that the same Jamie that I had some discussions with back about mid-season last year?

  12. redfred2 11/17/2006 at 11:18 PM #

I could hear the athleticism over the radio in the first half. It is a fun game when the game is played that way.

As far as Grant’s physical ability and potential, there was clear evidence of it last season. He now has this year for sure, and next year (we hope with the legal mess), to bust loose and make his mark in hopes of heading to the NBA.

I was glad to see Costner start to open up. He played with much more enthusiasm tonight than the preseason or last week’s game. The kids ran a lot of give and go and high post low post stuff that worked well when they were concentrating. Fells and Grant had several very athletic dunks. Overall a pretty good game for the kids.

  14. Mr O 11/17/2006 at 11:25 PM #

We played good defense and rebounded well in the first half. If we are going to win this year, then that has to be the main focus. We aren’t going to run teams out of the gym and we definitely shouldn’t try to do so. We should be able to generate points, but we aren’t going to out-score people. We are going to have be efficient on offense…like we were in the first half tonight. Unfortunately, we were very sloppy in the 2nd half.

However, overall it was a good win and it was great to see Costner break out and Fells hit some shots from the outside. As fans we need to forget about “up-tempo” or whatever that means and instead worry about playing winning, smart basketball.

Crowd was very light tonight. Why do the people with all of the good seats not come to games?

  15. Jamie 11/17/2006 at 11:29 PM #

“Wait a minute, “JAMIEâ€?, is that the same Jamie that I had some discussions with back about mid-season last year?”

I doubt it. While I have been reading this blog for a few years now, I very seldom post comments. I prefer to be a casual observer.

  16. mroli 11/17/2006 at 11:38 PM #

While i enjoyed the game very much (Pack looked pretty good), Delaware St. looked awful. I can’t get too excited about the game – other than the dunks. They were great. Valpo in week is going to be a much tougher test.

    Go Pack!

Mr O says: “Why do the people with all of the good seats not come to games?”

Ask GlaxoSmithKline or any of the big RTP corporations, as they are the ones we sold our souls by giving our prime midcourt seats to inflate our season ticket numbers.

The only times these seats are filled are for the Duke and/or UNC games, with those occupying the seats wearing some iteration of blue, of course.

All pre season I have told everyone that Grant is a very, very nice player he was just not being used the right way under the old slow down style. He is more versatile than Hodge, and has a little better shot. Costner’s stroke is like freakin’ butter, and if Fells continues to hone his defensive skills, his offense will follow–he could be another Josh Powell (from mouse to monster). This team will be the surprise of the ACC! LAST PLACE MY IRISH ASS!!!!

btw: did Sid dress as sharp tonight as he did at the Wofford game?? That pinstripe suit was slick!

  19. Glen Sudhop54 11/18/2006 at 12:49 AM #

    Fred
I was at the game tonight, there were several fastbreak dunks including a reverse by Gavin. Fells went sky high as well. Win or lose, you’ll like Sidney’s brand of ball.

Also, I highly recommend XM radio. They broadcast all ACC football and basketball games (as well as MLB and NHL). Lotsa games… plus they have a running sports ticker. I have a portable walkman style. However, before purchasing- make sure you can get the signal–No problem in the triangle with reception, but sometimes iffy in the sticks.

  20. Frank 11/18/2006 at 1:26 AM #

If you are within 300 miles of a fairly powerful AM station that carries the games, try the CC RADIO PLUS. It gets much better AM reception than any other radio, sometimes more than 300 miles.

WolfPup35 Says: “btw: did Sid dress as sharp tonight as he did at the Wofford game?? That pinstripe suit was slick!”

Said with a roll of the eyes, “Not that that didn’t happen with Coach Sendek, over the years.â€? 😉

  22. Mr O 11/18/2006 at 8:48 AM #

Mickey: That may be true for some of those empty seats, but not all of them IMO. The lower level had tons of empty seats. I don’t think the entire crowd in the building could have filled the lower level last night.

So much for my theory that the Clemson game kept a lot of people away last week. There won’t be many pre-season last place major conference teams that will draw as many fans as we do this year, but it is still a shame we don’t get bigger turnouts. I was fairly encouraged by our performance last night overall. I was really worried we might lose some of the cupcake games going into the year, but after last night I feel a lot better about getting through those games undefeated.

I think it would be a great if this team could make the NIT.

  23. BJD95 11/18/2006 at 9:46 AM #

Remember – this Delaware State team could very easily be an NCAAT team – they have the returning conference player of the year AND a highly touted Cincy transfer. We pretty much shut them down, which was a very good sign. The last 12 minutes were very sloppy, but I think they just lost focus after getting the 24-point lead.

Delaware State was very deliberate, and like Sid said in the post-game – we did a good job of being PATIENT on defense. That (along with late sloppiness) explains the low score. I don’t remember us really ever bleeding the shot clock until the very end, and we were very aggressive in transition AND in our half-court sets.

Like O said, I had been very worried about losing a tune-up game, and this one very specifically. Let’s keep it rolling against Valpo!

Remember also that many of the high rollers were likely at the Park event – and they tend tto have some prime seats. I thought the crowd looked pretty decent for an 8:00 Friday night game.

  24. StateFans 11/18/2006 at 10:13 AM #

    MrO,

The Park Alumni Center dedication tonight was a black tie gala scheduled before Quentin Jackson made the mistake of scheduling another Friday night game (ever heard of High School football?)

More than 600 of NC State’s best donors were at the event on Friday night – including Lee Fowler.

If was important enough for our AD to be in attendance instead of the BBall game, then why should anyone choose the game over the Alumni Center dedication?

That is where a bulk of your high roller tickets were.

  25. wolfonthehill 11/18/2006 at 10:49 AM #

I’m cautiously excited. This is probably not an NCAA-T team, but if they win 6 in the ACC, I’ll probably enjoy it more than any 10-win season under Herb.

More dunks than I can recall since Inge went nuts against Tech a loonnnggg time ago and had, like, 8 on his own.

And the post-game comments from Sidney sounded like he knew basketball in the real world, not on a blackboard.
