Don’t Forget… (VTPackfan’s Preview Added 5:15)

There is a basketball game tonight. I will be there, as will Jeff. Feel free to use this as a game thread. I will have my blackberry, and might post in the comments from the arena.

I am nervous Delaware State could beat us – they are supposedly in contention in the MEAC, and the good MEAC team has been a pesky NCAAT out in recent years. Regardless, I look forward to seeing Gavin Grant’s one-man show!

UPDATE: VTPackfan sent in the following fantastic game preview, for which we thank him profusely:

Pace and Points needed vs. Deleware St.

In a good tune up for friday nights game vs. the Wolfpack of NC State, the Hornets of Delaware State saw first hand what points in the paint and a quality big man can do to their winning ambitions. The MEAC regular season champions come into this season with hopes of erasing last years conference tourney upset loss to Hampton, and a chance to play in the NCAA’s after last years NIT run. With all but one starter back and a 6′ 6″ swingman transfer for Univ. of Cincinnati, their chances will rest in the balance of attack their back court can churn out. With only one starter over 6’6″, problems will arise in the battles in the paint. Take tuesday nights loss to #4 Pitt as exhibit A. They had their hands full of seven foot Pitt center Aaron Gray all night and it still wasn’t enough to slow him down, though they were able to cut the lead to single digits early in the second half. Pitts 57% percent shooting, mostly done in and around the paint allowed this game to never become in jeopardy. The Hornets have what it takes due to transfer Blunt, who averaged 5 points a game his freshman year for Cincinatti, and the stellar play of a PG named Shine.

New Wolfpack coach Sidney Lowe will have his hands full getting his men to play tight defense on the Hornet perimeter play and should expect the Hornets to put up a pretty big number against his work in progress team, especially if they hit their threes at a more consitent rate then they did at Pitt (7-37, ouch!). Also look for Lowes squad to try and wipe the glass clean with Mcauley and Costeners size edge, especially on the defensive end. One of Lowes first arrangements with his new team was to pick up the tempo over what they had experienced over the past years, and theres no better way to implement that policy then off a defensive rebound. It will be a true test of whether Lowe wants to play up tempo against a guard oriented team of if he trys to slow it down to use the size mis-match down low and rest his short bench. We will see.

Perimeter D is stepping up. Not amazing…but we don’t have the luxury of having the bodies to exert too much pressure.

Del St much like Herb’s NCSU – trying to match up shooters with our big guys on perimeter.

Sidney is practicing his substitution pattern. Lots of 1 min breaks for Fells, Grant, etc,

Holy shit…great double pump slam by Grant on heady play by Neiman.

    Neiman getting legit mins.

Holy shit…Grant gets third straight dunk!!!

We’ve got at least 6 dunks in first half.

    37-22 at half

Guys, for those of us living out of the area (I hate Penn State), thanks for the updates. Sounds like a great game, keep it up

As useless as the “Official” University Athletics web site usually is, the live stat thing is pretty cool, IMHO, for those of you who can’t listen on the radio.

It turned into the Gavin Grant dunk parade. I am starting to understand the NBA talk now. He looks bulked up (definitely has an NBA body now) and is MUCH more confident and aggressive with the ball.

Atsur no longer looks like a 2 playing the point. He is thinking and reacting like a pure PG. This style fits him very well.

Nieman has good basketball instincts. His pass to set up one Grant dunk was outstanding.

If Costner keeps drawing fouls down low, he’ll get lots of cheap points from the stripe. Very good FT stroke. He seems very energized tonight.

McCauley is having trouble getting his shots it seems? I was really impressed with his hustle, more than anyone, and all over the court last week. Is he still playing hard?

agree with gopack…its been a very very long time since i have heard this much excitement over the radio. My heart is pounding like the old days. This is wolfpack basketball!!!!!!!!!!! great first half….other posts have said something about the new lack of scoring droughts….funny, i dont sit around expecting that from this team…they attack. Lets finish this in the second half.

Have we already passed the Herb Sendek season average for slams? Good grief what an end to the half!

Sorry for saying the H word, but y’all know what I mean.

Costner 16 pts already early in 2nd half…41-22, 17:56 remaining

Boy, the announcers are afraid to say anything about the fast breaks and up tempo offense without adding something like, “Not that they didn’t do that over the past four or five years” to qualify of every statement.

I heard an interview with Ernie Myers before the game where the asked him if he felt closer to the team now. Of course the question was followed by, “Not that that didn’t happen with Coach Sendek, over the years.”

    Get over it.

i have heard the same redfred…dumb…let the past go….14-0 run since last half…what scoring drought?

  14. tvp 11/17/2006 at 10:15 PM #

I can’t wait to watch this team play…sounds fantastic.

This starting five is really really good, and it sounds like they are learning to play in synch with each other. Now, if we can just get some quality minutes from Horner, Nieman, and Ferguson…we could really surprise some people.
