Cowher Johnson? Fisher? Other?

Sorry that we are late on this. We are only bothering to put it up so that we can say that it is up there. Bill Cowher said no to the Wolfpack in public today. However, after the public comments Chris Mortenson commented on Erik Kuselias’ radio show (ESPN) that Cowher to State is still a possibility – not a certain ‘no’ yet.

Honestly, we have no clue if there is anything more to Mortenson’s comments regarding the chance that Cowher could still end up at State; Cowher’s comments certainly didn’t sound like they left much room for interpretation. So, we don’t want to try to talk ourselves into a situation where we try to convince ourselves that Cowher’s press conference was a tactic to get out of the spotlight.

You can take a look at the video of Cowher’s comments by clicking here. Additionally, the reliable Dave Glenn says

There is confirmation today, from both Cowher and university sources, that he is not a candidate for the N.C . State job. As reflected below, this result is the one NCSU officials expected.

If Cowher’s comments were 100% legitimate and the ride with him is over, then we’re pretty perplexed about the way that this has played out from a public relations pespective. It certainly wasn’t the smoothest of moves. One of our friends emailed this afternoon and was fuming. The text of the email went like this:

F’ing Fowler could have done this. Isn’t the whole point of Neinas to KEEP THIS EXACT THING from happening? What does he do? I’ve wanted PJ all along, so that he turned us down is not a big deal to me, but this PR disaster is exactly what we did not need. Now it is a circus and everyone can (and will) point at us and laugh. Why would BC do this to us? How can Neinas let it happen? I never would have guessed that BC would publically “Calipari” us. I love these guys who spend years talking about how they would take our job, only to publically humiliate us when it is offered to them.

We are sure that the search has been simultaneously running different parallel tracks in private, but now the public scrutiny will turn to Navy’s Paul Johnson. Earlier in the week Johnson was widely speculated by many to be a strong #2 after Coach Cowher. Did he remain the lead horse as NC State has analyzed other candidates? We don’t know. But we definitely hope that those close to the search have kept their eyes wide open and given all candidates legitimate consideration. We voiced our thoughts in this entry.

Earlier today we highlighted some comments by Steve Logan regarding Paul Johnson that some readers viewed as concerning. If we had to voice one other major concern then it would definitely be the composition of Johnson’s unimpressive staff. Take a look at these guys and you will understand our point.

Coach Johnson still has the Army/Navy game to coach this weekend, so we would not expect much to get done with him prior to the conclusion of that game therefore giving Lee Fowler and the search committee time to contemplate alternative options. Many people out there are speculating on some of these options and we just don’t have enough concrete information to do anything other than speculate as well.

The following are some random comments related to the search:

* Like Cowher, Norm Chow and David Cutcliffe both commented publicly today that they have not been contacted by NC State. Of course they haven’t. Nobody is going to be contacted by NC State until a deal is on its way to being struck. This is one of the primary purposes of hiring a consultant/search firm to help navigate the process.

* LSU’s Jimbo Fisher may have much more upside than Paul Johnson, but he could also have more downside. Fisher could easily be the next Mark Richt or Bobby Petrino; then again, he could end up being David Cutcliffe at Ole Miss.

* Where there is the greatest risk comes the greatest opportunity for big rewards. This is why Athletics Directors are paid the big bucks to make these types decisions. One can only hope that their AD has been diligent in making connections and studying coaches through the years prior to being thrown into such a position. Rumor is that it is hard to stay on top of your job eating at Jimmy V’s Steakhouse every night, coming into the office at 10am every day, or hanging out on Lake Gaston on the weekends.

* If you are an ESPN INsider then you will see some nice comments about many of the names mentioned as potential candidates for the State job in this entry highlighting the country’s Top 10 hottest assistant coaches. We will wet your whistle with the comments that they shared about the #1 assistant, Jimbo Fisher:

His name was circulated for the FSU offensive coordinator vacancy, but word is he is poised to get his own program to run. Fisher has coached under both Terry Bowden and Nick Saban. Players love him, and he’s regarded within the coaching community as a great play-caller. Has had the tag as the hot assistant for a while after consistently putting up big numbers with the Tigers’ offense. If Cincy wants an offensive guy, Fisher might be it.

* Someone made a good comment to us today – “If you be supportive of hiring Jim Grobe, then why wouldn’t support Paul Johnson”.

* Evidently, Dr. Jerry Punch has made supportive comments of former Miami coach Larry Coker in public and private. Any time that a Miami-related coach is mentioned then you can bet that Steve Logan’s name will not be far away. Logan has very strong ties with many of Miami’s coaches over the last 20 years.

As much as I love the Gabe….he is in his early to mid 60’s and has had a number of serious health issues…most of which he attributes to being divorced so many times…at least he’s got his sense of humor. Face it my friends…the April Post that predicted a DISASTER by FUF if we had to replace Amato has now come to fruition…

We need to ask forgiveness to the Gods for our sins and transgressions…we need to repent and promise to sin no more…

FUF is worse than the plagues that God unleashed on those sinister Egyptians…

Where is Moses when we need him?

kozmo, what makes you think Fisher wouldn’t leave LSU to come here? According to some LSU friends of mine, all is not well in Baton Rouge. Several coaches are not happy with Les Miles. I don’t know how much to believe, but there’s no way to tell if he would come or not.

Also, I know we all want more offense. I know we need more offense. But let’s face it, Daniel Evans is not going to be the guy to take the offense up a level. Will Justin Burke be the starter next year?

Wonder if Mike Ditka needs a new challenge??? LOL!

Jed Says: “So, you write things that are just hateful to a lot of a people without any knowledge of what’s really going on.”

This is what Fowler was speaking of when he referred to the “lunatic fringe,” not the broad Wolfpack fan base as some folks with a hard-on for the AD would have us believe.

If Fowler has a problem, its because he’s too damn honest in what he says. It isn’t stupidity, it is naivity. And when he says things like the full quote from which the above is taken, he opens himself up to being taken out of context and ridiculed.

DiscoStu65 Says: “I think Roman Gabriel is the Sid Lowe of Wolfpack football. Will he be our go to guy after all the fall out? He did coach the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks for one season, they were semi-pro.”

Gabe would not opt for coming to NCSU in any capacity. He loves his team mates from college but he thinks the powers from some time past f**ked him over. Whether they did or not is irrelevent. And, like as has been said, his health is an issue.

Rick Says: “If that is a quote from LF then he should be outright fired.”

Good one, Rick. If SFN thinks a “cascade of national embarrassment” came because of our difficulties in our bb coach search, I can just imagine what would “cascade” down for saying someting as innocuous as negativity from the internet is becoming a real problem.

Postes here are bragging about running a coach off. He wasn’t fired, we just made life for his family so miserable he took another job. Something to be proud of fr2? I think not. Fortunately, our Chancellor doesn’t either.

tressel did not recruit at youngstown like he is doing at ihio state. he didn’t beat michigan and texas at youngstown. pj doesn’t recruit the caliber players at navy like he would have if he would at a bcs schools. that doesn’t mean that he can’t. he doesn’t play big time bcs shool on his schedule because that is not navy usually plays. it says nothing about the man. if you are in the shool of chasing big name guys, then do it and probably going to have to do it again in three years. if you want a guy to will win you games, then pj is one of the few that is available to us. doesn’t mean that he would take the job. we will lucky if he is willing to come down here if the job is offered to him. don’t be full of yourself. go get your chow and try to get him fired in three years.

Yeah…..and they were WINLESS in their only season !

I’m just wondering if anyone saw Brian Kelly and his Central Michigan team last night in the MAC Championship Game? Like Johnson he has an incredible D1-AA record. Like Johnson he has done very well at a small school without world-class talent. UNLIKE Johnson….he has won using the spread-pro offense with 4 and 5 WR’s. Somehow he manages to win without terrific O-Lineman and rocket-armed QB’s (his QB is a true freshman), and he still does it using a pro-spread offense. He is in year 3 of a four-year deal. Someone needs to call him fast!!

Some food for thought re Houston Nutt. Maybe he’s NOT pulling a “Calipari” !

  12. highonlowe 12/01/2006 at 4:03 PM #

pq, I watched the MAC Championship too. I kept thinking throughout the game: Marcus Stone would really thrive with either of these teams. Against the par, slower defenses, Stone would probably be a standout.
Anyway, I catch your sarcasm. I think everyone has their doubts about PJ’s offense, but we just won’t know how it’ll pan out until/if he’s hired.

Nuttsucks.com?!?! Those crazy ebays runnin’ off a coach again! I bet that’s the biggest challenge to their AD. Damn inter-nets.

Post From the Free Board (Great Read)
    ————————–
Guys let me give you a bit of insight on PJ from a GSU perspective. I can do so because my stepson played for him and proudly wears the two national championship rings that GSU won when PJ was head coach. I’ve been in his office and I know the man.

Paul Johnson is an offensive genius. He thinks outside of the box and he’s always one step ahead of the defense. He thinks two plays ahead, often running something that might not get great yardage to set up something that will.

Many people think that any form of the option is boring football, but I can tell you that GSU’s version of it under PJ was anything but boring. He’s constantly got players in motion, which often forces LB to cover the lightening quick slotbacks that are already moving when the ball is snapped.

Many posters have listed some of his accomplishments, and there are many. I can tell you this. The man was born to be a football coach, even though he never played the game. He played basketball. But the great coach Erk Russell saw something in him that he liked, and put him in charge of his offense at GSU.

In just their second year of 1-AA football, GSU beat Furman 44-42 to win their first of six national championships (all running Johnson’s flexbone offense. Between 185 and 2000, GSU played in the 1-AA National Championship game eight times using that offense. Ironically after falling behind by more than 20 points against Furman, Johnson told Russell that he was going to open things up a bit, and QB Tracey Ham passed for more than 400 yards in route to the victory. As memory serves me, Dick Sheridan was the Furman coach.

Ham ran for more than 3,000 yards and passed for more than 5,000 in his career, and he is the only D1 QB in history to do that.

Someone mentioned Adrian Peterson, who now plays for the Bears. AP holds many NCAA D1 records. Including playoff games, Peterson rushed for more than 9,000 yards and went over 100 yards in 48 consecutive games against defenses specifically designed to stop him week after week. Peterson rushed for more than 250 yards to beat Jim Tressel’s Youngstown State team in the 1999 National Championship by a score of 59-24, and it really wasn’t that close.

PJ’s offense put up 41 points and 600 yards of offense on Dennis Ericson’s bowl bound Oregon State team in ’99.

My point here is that Paul Johnson’s offense will score points in bunches regardless of what league he’s coaching in. The offense is built on speed and deception. It forces the defense to be perfect on every play, and when they don’t they pay the price. He runs what his players are best suited for, so if he’s got a good throwing QB and WR, he’ll throw it more.

This is PJ’s offense. He knows the nuances of that option scheme better than anyone. Perhaps that’s why many name coaches spent time in the off season at GSU learning the intricacies of the option from Johnson. I cannot tell you how many BCS coaches spent time with him, but I can tell you about one – he’s now the coach at Florida.

If PJ had the same skill player speed at Navy that he had at GSU, you would not believe how many points they would score. He’ll find a QB that runs in the 4.4 range and can throw the ball if he comes to NCST. It’s really tough to get those kids at GSU or Navy, but he can attract them to State. He’ll find a 220 pound FB that can explode into the hole, and you can just watch him run. The FB dive in PJ’s option hits the line in less than a second, so the back is often at the LB level before the DL can recover.

People have said that Spurrier’s success was more about his scheme than anything else. Johnson’s flexbone is the same. He can take decent players and make them stars. Imagine what he’d do with really good three, four and five star recruits.

Johnson runs his team like the CEO of a major company. He is very organized and is a no nonsense guy. Obviously I could go on and on, but I’ll leave you with one PJ story.

GSU was on the road when one of its backs was hit out of bounds. It was early in the first quarter, and there was no score. The players landed near Johnson and you could see in his face that he didn’t like the late hit. He walked over to the guilty player and said “you go tell your coach that I’m getting ready to light his scoreboard up.” He did too. PJ is fiercely competitive. He doesn’t like to lose. If his team does lose, he always takes the blame, saying that he didn’t do a good enough job coaching the team in the loss.

I don’t know if NCST will offer PJ or not, but I can tell you that you cannot find a better coach anywhere than Paul Johnson.

^ I love it. That just officially moved Johnson to the top of my list.

  15. highstick 12/01/2006 at 4:42 PM #

I’ve watched most of the SC home games with Spurrier the past two years and there are a few things he does that go beyond the X’s and O’s and I think adds to his success. One is he wants the kids to “play smart”, i.e. no dumb penalties and don’t waste timeouts”. He also is a “no nonsense” coach as far as off the field conduct. And the third one is that he gets the players to “buy in” to his schemes and they work when they execute them. These seem like just “common sense” things, but he’s a master at making it work.

What is plan B if PJ says no? Surely with his credentials he has been sought before now.

I say either an already outstanding OC and definitely not a DC. And why not? As a head coach we have seen coaches from the D side of the ball, put the conservative touch on a team. “OK OC, we got a lead now, don’t risk an INT” I can’t imagine an OC saying to a DC, “We got us a good lead, why don’t you take a chance and see if you can get us an INT.”

  19. partialqualifier 12/02/2006 at 9:28 AM #

Good piece on PJ, DixieWolf. Again let me state that I think at the end of the day Johnson is a good coach. He deserves a shot somewhere, but he will get devoured at NC State. I dont think he is the right fit for our university.

One thing that has gone w/o mention is the current team we have now at NC State. At what point does the talent on hand and talent coming in next year play into who is hired as the next coach? Could you see Daniel Evans running the option attack Johnson favors? What about Burke, the 4-star QB who was redshirted this year at State? He was recruited to play specifically in the spread West Coast Offense attack Trestman ran. How in the hell is a guy like that gonna run a spread option attack? Another thing….this spread option attack relies on having O-Linemen who can get out of thier stance and pull to the outside or trap inside. Did you guys see what happened every time we attempted to pull any of our linemen? It was a total disaster. They are way too slow.

I was just wondering, what everyone thought about that.
