Cowher Johnson? Fisher? Other?

Sorry that we are late on this. We are only bothering to put it up so that we can say that it is up there. Bill Cowher said no to the Wolfpack in public today. However, after the public comments Chris Mortenson commented on Erik Kuselias’ radio show (ESPN) that Cowher to State is still a possibility – not a certain ‘no’ yet.

Honestly, we have no clue if there is anything more to Mortenson’s comments regarding the chance that Cowher could still end up at State; Cowher’s comments certainly didn’t sound like they left much room for interpretation. So, we don’t want to try to talk ourselves into a situation where we try to convince ourselves that Cowher’s press conference was a tactic to get out of the spotlight.

You can take a look at the video of Cowher’s comments by clicking here. Additionally, the reliable Dave Glenn says

There is confirmation today, from both Cowher and university sources, that he is not a candidate for the N.C . State job. As reflected below, this result is the one NCSU officials expected.

If Cowher’s comments were 100% legitimate and the ride with him is over, then we’re pretty perplexed about the way that this has played out from a public relations pespective. It certainly wasn’t the smoothest of moves. One of our friends emailed this afternoon and was fuming. The text of the email went like this:

F’ing Fowler could have done this. Isn’t the whole point of Neinas to KEEP THIS EXACT THING from happening? What does he do? I’ve wanted PJ all along, so that he turned us down is not a big deal to me, but this PR disaster is exactly what we did not need. Now it is a circus and everyone can (and will) point at us and laugh. Why would BC do this to us? How can Neinas let it happen? I never would have guessed that BC would publically “Calipari” us. I love these guys who spend years talking about how they would take our job, only to publically humiliate us when it is offered to them.

We are sure that the search has been simultaneously running different parallel tracks in private, but now the public scrutiny will turn to Navy’s Paul Johnson. Earlier in the week Johnson was widely speculated by many to be a strong #2 after Coach Cowher. Did he remain the lead horse as NC State has analyzed other candidates? We don’t know. But we definitely hope that those close to the search have kept their eyes wide open and given all candidates legitimate consideration. We voiced our thoughts in this entry.

Earlier today we highlighted some comments by Steve Logan regarding Paul Johnson that some readers viewed as concerning. If we had to voice one other major concern then it would definitely be the composition of Johnson’s unimpressive staff. Take a look at these guys and you will understand our point.

Coach Johnson still has the Army/Navy game to coach this weekend, so we would not expect much to get done with him prior to the conclusion of that game therefore giving Lee Fowler and the search committee time to contemplate alternative options. Many people out there are speculating on some of these options and we just don’t have enough concrete information to do anything other than speculate as well.

The following are some random comments related to the search:

* Like Cowher, Norm Chow and David Cutcliffe both commented publicly today that they have not been contacted by NC State. Of course they haven’t. Nobody is going to be contacted by NC State until a deal is on its way to being struck. This is one of the primary purposes of hiring a consultant/search firm to help navigate the process.

* LSU’s Jimbo Fisher may have much more upside than Paul Johnson, but he could also have more downside. Fisher could easily be the next Mark Richt or Bobby Petrino; then again, he could end up being David Cutcliffe at Ole Miss.

* Where there is the greatest risk comes the greatest opportunity for big rewards. This is why Athletics Directors are paid the big bucks to make these types decisions. One can only hope that their AD has been diligent in making connections and studying coaches through the years prior to being thrown into such a position. Rumor is that it is hard to stay on top of your job eating at Jimmy V’s Steakhouse every night, coming into the office at 10am every day, or hanging out on Lake Gaston on the weekends.

* If you are an ESPN INsider then you will see some nice comments about many of the names mentioned as potential candidates for the State job in this entry highlighting the country’s Top 10 hottest assistant coaches. We will wet your whistle with the comments that they shared about the #1 assistant, Jimbo Fisher:

His name was circulated for the FSU offensive coordinator vacancy, but word is he is poised to get his own program to run. Fisher has coached under both Terry Bowden and Nick Saban. Players love him, and he’s regarded within the coaching community as a great play-caller. Has had the tag as the hot assistant for a while after consistently putting up big numbers with the Tigers’ offense. If Cincy wants an offensive guy, Fisher might be it.

* Someone made a good comment to us today – “If you be supportive of hiring Jim Grobe, then why wouldn’t support Paul Johnson”.

* Evidently, Dr. Jerry Punch has made supportive comments of former Miami coach Larry Coker in public and private. Any time that a Miami-related coach is mentioned then you can bet that Steve Logan’s name will not be far away. Logan has very strong ties with many of Miami’s coaches over the last 20 years.

Here’s a name for all of the Johnson supporters:

    Brian Kelly

    Ever heard of him?

He is HC at Central Michigan. His team is 8-4 and playing in MAC Championship game this weekend….which is just slightly bigger than Army/Navy. Before he coached at Central Michigan he was in D1-AA at Grand Valley State. There he won 2 D1-AA National Championships and his record was an unbelievable 118-35-2! That is .761 winning percentage!!! He is in his third year at CMU. He is 46 years old. He is 18-15 at a school that hasnt had a winning season since 1998! This year they lost by 7 at Boston College and by 24 at Michigan (who obliterated Notre Dame!).

Why is it that we want Paul Johnson, but nobody has mentioned this guy?

PQ…but why so “high” on Tulsa coach??

  3. pack7483 11/30/2006 at 4:34 PM #

PJ won 86% of his games at GA Southern.

  4. partialqualifier 11/30/2006 at 4:38 PM #

    Steve Kragthorpe

Started in 2003 at Tulsa. Since then they have made 3 bowls in a row including going 8-4 this year. When he took the job in 2003 the last bowl game Tulsa had played in was the Freedom Bowl back in 1991!

According to an article on KOTV.com….

“there were people wondering if this team would ever score 28 points in a game before Steve got here…”

“…just a few years back there were serious rumblings that Tulsa was wasting their time fielding a football team…maybe we should just stick with basketball.”

I think that speaks for itself.

gee……what are we waiting for then? let’s make him an offer right now!

  6. partialqualifier 11/30/2006 at 4:42 PM #

    ^LOL^

He also was an assistant with the Buffalo Bills

  7. pack7483 11/30/2006 at 4:49 PM #

Pack Prides “big board” as of today:

    1. Paul Johnson
    2. Norm Chow
    3. David Cutcliffe
    4. Jim Donnan
    5. Jimbo Fisher

Lots of Larry Coker “buzz” as well.

  8. choppack1 11/30/2006 at 4:52 PM #

PQ – He seems like a good coach.

I wonder what kind of contacts that coach has – also, what kind of offense does he run?

I’d take Kraglethorpe – but I think he’s a WC guy. Also, he w/drew his name from the UNC opening, so I kind of doubt he’s interested in ours – unless, of course, he already had a contingency offer!

  9. DiscoStu65 11/30/2006 at 4:52 PM #

I think Roman Gabriel is the Sid Lowe of Wolfpack football. Will he be our go to guy after all the fall out? He did coach the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks for one season, they were semi-pro.

someone has to know something, any rumors or anything. Hope lee isn’t at home laying on the couch, with a beer scraching his but

  11. pack7483 11/30/2006 at 4:58 PM #

PJ is on Alabama’s “list”……..he is behind Spurrier and Rodriguez. If the WVA position opened up, PJ would likely be high on their list as well. If PJ is our guy, we need to make a push for him after the ARMY / NAVY game this weekend.

  12. cpwolfpackfan 11/30/2006 at 5:08 PM #

dont want pj, his style of o would be like watching herbs style of o in bb. I just don’t think he is the guy. Plus he has been recruiting a different type of player the last few years than the ones we need to win. I don’t think he has made the right recruiting connections to come in and make a impact. I want jimb fisher. the man can recruite and knows his O

  13. cpwolfpackfan 11/30/2006 at 5:10 PM #

pj will wear thin in a year or so, the wish bone will put you to sleep, and there is a major reason that none of the major programs run it. it is the prinstion style O of college football

  14. partialqualifier 11/30/2006 at 5:17 PM #

Well….I have wasted another day at work discussing NC State coaching.

Before I leave….let me say that I have enjoyed saprring with my fellow wolfpackers. Some of u have persuaded me to look differently at Paul Johnson. I still think he is only being considered because of his ties to the state and I still think there are AT LEAST 4 other reasonable candidates that are more impressive. However….maybe Johnson has something to prove. He’s been passed over a million times in 27 years, and maybe he’s hungry to prove all those people wrong. I still think his upside is minimal, but who knows? Have a good night! I will see you tomorrow and we can throw it around some more!

    Go Pack!

  15. gumbydammit 11/30/2006 at 5:20 PM #

why do I have this nagging fear that Lee will screw this up, too? we’ll get a coach, eventually, but not until Lee has completely humiliated NC State in the process.

  16. PAPacker 11/30/2006 at 5:30 PM #

a little help. on packpride by their coaching search link, they have four pics, the bottom left is of a coach in a UGA cap, that isn’t Donnan is it?

  17. pack7483 11/30/2006 at 5:40 PM #

do you really think PJ would run the wishbone if he came to NCSU? when he was the OC at Hawaii, do you think they were running the bone when they were putting up 50+ each game? he knows how to adapt to the players he has and their skill level.

  18. choppack1 11/30/2006 at 5:40 PM #

OK – I think we can all agree these names are outright stinkers….

    Jim Donnan
    David Cutcliff
    Larry Coker

Why not consider Rich Kotite….Sorry, but if these are our candidates, Lee Fowler should be placed in Dorthea Dix ASAP.

  19. wolfpack1986 11/30/2006 at 5:42 PM #

Choppack thanks for the correction re: Chuck’s position the point remains the same. I was also wondering is anyone gettin tired of the same complaints regarding PJ’s style of offense? I think there is just about every newpaper article in the last decade out there on the internet regarding his philosophy. If you still beleive it’s like Herb’s Princetons offense, I have to believe you have be “flaming” and trying to get a rise out of people.

PQ you have made some arguments that are reasonable (and your love for Fisher is obvious through a multitude of threads) but to compare Kragthorpe and Kelly to PJ at this time is not one of them. And to talk about PJ’s offense and then to have Shula on your list is incredible.

The bottom line is that that just as the national press (as much as I love them) the person that gives us the greates chance of success in my opinion is PJ. Let’s just hope that Mr. Fowler has acted before someone else does and we get stuck with a coordinator who will be learning on the job much like our last coach.

  20. pack7483 11/30/2006 at 5:42 PM #

yes……that is Donnan in the G hat.

  21. kozmokramer 11/30/2006 at 6:30 PM #

Time to quit dreaming and face some cold, hard facts. Fact number one is that Fisher is NOT coming to NC State; Alabama maybe, NC State…NO. Fact number two; Paul Johnson is not the answer for NC State football. His triple option offense will not work on ACC level competition. Don’t confuse his offense with Wake’s, Florida’s, or any other team that uses the ‘shotgun option’, two back set. That is not triple option like Johnson used at Georgia Southern and Navy. Fact number three; Norm Chow is not coming to NC State, and he isn’t the answer anyway.

Bottom line is that we have the best possible football coach living right here in Raleigh………..Steve Logan. Logan can put points on the board and beat ACC teams on a regular basis. He did it at ECU, and can do it EVEN BETTER here at State.

LET’S HIRE……….STEVE LOGAN, AND MOVE FORWARD!!!

  22. cpwolfpackfan 11/30/2006 at 6:49 PM #

good point, i think he is the answer, but somehow fowler will screw this up, pj is the herb sendeck of college football, i do not want to see his style of football here , it will put you to sleep. please god do not let lee fowler hire this man or it will be all i can take

  23. cpwolfpackfan 11/30/2006 at 6:52 PM #

is this what it has come to. we are going to have to hire a coach to install a gimic offense so we can “compete” in the acc, that offense is designed to help you compete with more talented teams. kinda like the prinston style in bb

  24. cpwolfpackfan 11/30/2006 at 7:00 PM #

    any news on atsure

  25. highonlowe 11/30/2006 at 7:13 PM #

Guys, this is from Tuesday’s Football Update:
We are expecting this “search” to be pretty quick and pretty painless.

It now looks as thought things are evolving as it has appeared they would – if Bill Cowher says no then Paul Johnson is the man.

“Search” in quotes, inferring this isn’t a true search for candidates. If not Cowher, then PJ. What’s unclear about this?
