Cowher Johnson? Fisher? Other?

Sorry that we are late on this. We are only bothering to put it up so that we can say that it is up there. Bill Cowher said no to the Wolfpack in public today. However, after the public comments Chris Mortenson commented on Erik Kuselias’ radio show (ESPN) that Cowher to State is still a possibility – not a certain ‘no’ yet.

Honestly, we have no clue if there is anything more to Mortenson’s comments regarding the chance that Cowher could still end up at State; Cowher’s comments certainly didn’t sound like they left much room for interpretation. So, we don’t want to try to talk ourselves into a situation where we try to convince ourselves that Cowher’s press conference was a tactic to get out of the spotlight.

You can take a look at the video of Cowher’s comments by clicking here. Additionally, the reliable Dave Glenn says

There is confirmation today, from both Cowher and university sources, that he is not a candidate for the N.C . State job. As reflected below, this result is the one NCSU officials expected.

If Cowher’s comments were 100% legitimate and the ride with him is over, then we’re pretty perplexed about the way that this has played out from a public relations pespective. It certainly wasn’t the smoothest of moves. One of our friends emailed this afternoon and was fuming. The text of the email went like this:

F’ing Fowler could have done this. Isn’t the whole point of Neinas to KEEP THIS EXACT THING from happening? What does he do? I’ve wanted PJ all along, so that he turned us down is not a big deal to me, but this PR disaster is exactly what we did not need. Now it is a circus and everyone can (and will) point at us and laugh. Why would BC do this to us? How can Neinas let it happen? I never would have guessed that BC would publically “Calipari” us. I love these guys who spend years talking about how they would take our job, only to publically humiliate us when it is offered to them.

We are sure that the search has been simultaneously running different parallel tracks in private, but now the public scrutiny will turn to Navy’s Paul Johnson. Earlier in the week Johnson was widely speculated by many to be a strong #2 after Coach Cowher. Did he remain the lead horse as NC State has analyzed other candidates? We don’t know. But we definitely hope that those close to the search have kept their eyes wide open and given all candidates legitimate consideration. We voiced our thoughts in this entry.

Earlier today we highlighted some comments by Steve Logan regarding Paul Johnson that some readers viewed as concerning. If we had to voice one other major concern then it would definitely be the composition of Johnson’s unimpressive staff. Take a look at these guys and you will understand our point.

Coach Johnson still has the Army/Navy game to coach this weekend, so we would not expect much to get done with him prior to the conclusion of that game therefore giving Lee Fowler and the search committee time to contemplate alternative options. Many people out there are speculating on some of these options and we just don’t have enough concrete information to do anything other than speculate as well.

The following are some random comments related to the search:

* Like Cowher, Norm Chow and David Cutcliffe both commented publicly today that they have not been contacted by NC State. Of course they haven’t. Nobody is going to be contacted by NC State until a deal is on its way to being struck. This is one of the primary purposes of hiring a consultant/search firm to help navigate the process.

* LSU’s Jimbo Fisher may have much more upside than Paul Johnson, but he could also have more downside. Fisher could easily be the next Mark Richt or Bobby Petrino; then again, he could end up being David Cutcliffe at Ole Miss.

* Where there is the greatest risk comes the greatest opportunity for big rewards. This is why Athletics Directors are paid the big bucks to make these types decisions. One can only hope that their AD has been diligent in making connections and studying coaches through the years prior to being thrown into such a position. Rumor is that it is hard to stay on top of your job eating at Jimmy V’s Steakhouse every night, coming into the office at 10am every day, or hanging out on Lake Gaston on the weekends.

* If you are an ESPN INsider then you will see some nice comments about many of the names mentioned as potential candidates for the State job in this entry highlighting the country’s Top 10 hottest assistant coaches. We will wet your whistle with the comments that they shared about the #1 assistant, Jimbo Fisher:

His name was circulated for the FSU offensive coordinator vacancy, but word is he is poised to get his own program to run. Fisher has coached under both Terry Bowden and Nick Saban. Players love him, and he’s regarded within the coaching community as a great play-caller. Has had the tag as the hot assistant for a while after consistently putting up big numbers with the Tigers’ offense. If Cincy wants an offensive guy, Fisher might be it.

* Someone made a good comment to us today – “If you be supportive of hiring Jim Grobe, then why wouldn’t support Paul Johnson”.

* Evidently, Dr. Jerry Punch has made supportive comments of former Miami coach Larry Coker in public and private. Any time that a Miami-related coach is mentioned then you can bet that Steve Logan’s name will not be far away. Logan has very strong ties with many of Miami’s coaches over the last 20 years.

^^”Yea, well my high school basketball coach won over 300 games and had .750 winning percentage….and guess what….UNC, NCSU, Duke, nor ECU ever hired him.”

Maybe if they HAD, they would be better than 2-9, 2-9, 0-11, and 7-6!! BTW, Dick Sheridan started as a high school coach, remember?? Still, not saying PJ is the Man, but I don’t really agree with your argument.

  3. pack7483 11/30/2006 at 2:42 PM #

    PQ….

I still have not read who you think should be our head coach? You obviously don’t want us to hire PJ.

  4. Texpack 11/30/2006 at 2:44 PM #

Nutt already pulled a Callipari once at Arkansas. He was offered the Nebraska job before they hired Callahan and parlayed that into a big raise.

    Packer74:

I understand that, and I am not saying for one instant that the only candidates qualified to coach at NC State are from large BCS schools. On the contrary there are many outstanding coaches to be had from small schools. Kragthorpe from Tulsa, Peterson at Boise St., even Holtz at ECU. All of them should be considered. But there are 2 obvious things that we all have to remember.

1-Paul Johnson has been coaching for 27 years, and he has maxed out in year 27 with Navy! In the world of never-ending coaching searches in college football, this guy has been overlooked by everyone for 27 years. There is a reason for that. Not to mention that we are the only school currently looking a coach who is even considering him.

2-This isnt the ACC of 1972 or 1986. I love Lou Holtz and Dick Sheridan. Holtz proved he could coach against any kind of competition, but there is no question that the ACC is 20 times tougher now than it was back then. I can remember when the ACC was lucky to get someone other than Clemson or Ga. Tech ranked. In this….a supposed down year…we have 5 teams ranked! Things are different now….the margin of error is slimmer than ever.

Let me ask all of you a question….and please give me an honest answer. No “BS”.

Would Paul Johnson even be a candidate for this job if he were not from North Carolina? (or one of our bordering states).

In other words, if he was from Minnesota and coaching at No.Colorado with the exact same record and resume, would you even know he existed?

  7. GAWolf 11/30/2006 at 2:54 PM #

PQ… you’ve spent way too much time writing the same things over and over about Paul Johnson. Your point has been made to us all. I seriously doubt you’re going to change any minds from this point forward. Relax a bit buddy.

  8. choppack1 11/30/2006 at 2:56 PM #

“No one is saying he is bad coach. He’s a good coach. Its the system. And whether or not he will change it is an unknown. And its too big of an unknown to risk a minimum 5 year committment. Add to that the recruiting questions and staff concerns and its a no-brainer.

PJ’s next step should be a school like Cincy.”

So here’s the logic at work here – you shouldn’t give a coach who has proven to be the best Division 1AA coach in America and has won at Navy and has elevated his Navy program in front of his rivals to the point where the rivalry would become a joke if he’s stayed and has taken on and beaten several Division 1A teams at Navy and has won at Navy – a chance until he proves himself at a school that’s slightly bigger or you shouldn’t give him a long term committment.

OTOH – you should give an OC w/ no headcoaching experience whatsoever a 5 year committment and these coaches don’t need to prove themselves before they become the alpha dog. Very logical argument.

If you’ve noticed – I am not saying Jimbo won’t be a good HC. I’m just telling you the unquestionable fact that he will be deviating from the ACC trend if he is. In the same vein, PJ would be a deviation from the norm if he DIDN’T succeed.

Im just a squirrel, tryin to get a NUTT. come on down houston, and bring reggie herring back with you.

  10. Mike 11/30/2006 at 3:01 PM #

Great post Wolfpack1986, my thoughts exactly. We hired a proven coordinator at a D1 BCS school and look at the results. I was thinking that, reading through the posts and you beat me to it. No one has seemed to have a thought on it, but history deos repeat. I am not knocking Fisher in any way, but he is not a lock. Chow is too old for long term. Talk about recruiting issues – “Son, you dont want to go play for Chow, he will be gone by the time you play your 4 or 5 years. Come play for me” the other coaches will say.

How about Tressel? Why not shoot for the top? He already owns red, and maybe he can bring back the gray pants I think we wore in O’Cain’s last year. Tressel has done all he can at OSU, time for him to come here and build a program from scratch.

  11. choppack1 11/30/2006 at 3:11 PM #

To be fair – Chuck was not a coordinator – and neither was MOC.

  12. Mike 11/30/2006 at 3:13 PM #

Hey look on the bright side if we do hire PJ. With his success at I-AA, at least we can give App St a run for their money every year.

Upset of the year in 2006 – NCState 23 AppSt 10. How did the Mounties manage to lose that one?

  13. partialqualifier 11/30/2006 at 3:22 PM #

GaWolf….point taken. I will behave, LOL!

All of us here are just rooting for the person that we feel will give the school we love the best opportunity to succeed. I personally feel that there are AT LEAST 4 or 5 guys who would do a good job. I dont really care who we get, but I am just blown away by the blind support for Johnson. I am not against Johnson b/c I am for anyone else. I am just extremely nervous about someone that has been passed over by everyone for 27 years…including every other school currently looking a head coach.

Guys like Kragthorpe, Fisher, Chow, Schiano, and a few more are on nearly EVERY teams list. Johnson is on one. Ours. Now do we know something nobody else does? Please let me know so I can get on board.

    As for my personal choice….

There are 3 or 4 ahead of Johnson

    1-Jimbo Fisher
    2-Steve Kragthorpe
    3-Norm Chow
    4-Mike Shula
    5-Paul Johnson

Reading on FoxSports.com….Arizona St. has confirmed that Norm Chow has been contacted regarding the coaching vacancy.

  14. RAWFS 11/30/2006 at 3:26 PM #

PQ, I really cannot believe you put Shula ahead of Johnson.

I will invite you to speak to any knowledgeable Alabama fan and hear the reasons why they let go of an alumnus.

I will give you a hint: extremely poor game coaching. I know, I have seen it for myself in Bryant-Denny.

  15. partialqualifier 11/30/2006 at 3:35 PM #

RAWFS: I watched a couple of bad coaching moves myself by Shula ( of course I watched on TV)…but he is mostly on there because of my many years as a Dolphins fan! That is until they ran off Marino for Jay Feely…and Don Shula for Jimmy “the Hair”….plus I figured if we couldnt have “the chin”…why not the “Son of the Jaw!” LOL!

  16. TNCSU 11/30/2006 at 3:42 PM #

^^Yikes, none of those really excite me. Has Jimbo Fisher or Norm Chow EVER been a HC? Besides the lack of discipline w/players, etc. what type of “game coach” is Larry Coker supposed to be? I think it would be funny to have to EX-Miami coaches within 20 miles of each other. I think I’d put him above Shula.

  17. jbwbubba 11/30/2006 at 3:44 PM #

Call, Jimbo Fisher, and Chow and first one to say yes gets it. IF neither contact the guys at Louisville, and Rutgers ( yes long shots but take a shot) Then talk to PJ and offer him the job. Then perhaps take a flyer on someone like Mike Sherman.

  18. partialqualifier 11/30/2006 at 3:48 PM #

I obviously tried to stick with those coaches that I thought we actually had a shot at. Of course I would much rather have Bobby Petrino, Fich Rodriguez, or Schiano…but I didnt waste my time putting any of those guys on the list. And that says a lot also. If we all just started listing “Perfect World” candidates I think we would come to the conclusion that about the highest ranked guy on the list that we actually have a shot at is probably ranked no higher than 6th or 7th. Once you get that far down, they are all risky.

  19. GAWolf 11/30/2006 at 3:51 PM #

Watching Bama play I saw that same deer in the headlight look that I used to see in Sendek during big games. I can’t really describe it, but it just seemed like both were having nervous breakdowns knowing they were over their heads on national television.

  20. partialqualifier 11/30/2006 at 3:53 PM #

    LOL! ^

Hey, can someone tell me why that guy peterson from Boise St isnt mentioned with any jobs out there? Is he too espensive…a flash in the pan…or what? Cause they are having a hell of a season and have been good for a while.

  21. pack7483 11/30/2006 at 3:55 PM #

PQ…why so high on Tulsa coach? he is 29-21 at Tulsa. how is he more attractive than PJ?

  22. RedTerror29 11/30/2006 at 3:56 PM #

Peterson is in his first year at Boise St. He took over for Dan Hawkins, who left for Colorado. So he’s yet to prove himself over time.

  23. RedTerror29 11/30/2006 at 3:57 PM #

Shula got thrown into the mix way to early at Bama. He’d never been more than a QB coach before he got that job. That hire was very similar to Bunting or D’oh, an alumnus who just wasn’t qualified (yet). I wouldn’t mind having him as our OC, and he’s in the second tier of my wish list of candidates.

  24. TNCSU 11/30/2006 at 4:13 PM #

I’m pretty sure there a few folks being looked at that are not on anyone’s “lists” right now. We’ll see if they produce any results, but I don’t think the above list is by any means “all inclusive.” There’s a diamond in the rough out there!

  25. NCSUknappster 11/30/2006 at 4:14 PM #

I don’t want to just be a person who randomly throws out any other names, we surely don’t need anymore, but since the thread title said other…I was wondering if we are considering Miami’s former defensive coordinator Randy Shannon. I know he is high on their list, but if they pass him by preferring someone with experience, he could be motivated to burn them. His defensive reputation is certainly top notch plus the guy has more Miami recruiting ties than Amato.

I mention this because I believe a few years back, during one of our searches for a defensive coordinator, he was a dream finalist that we would have to give the title of assistant head coach (like Monty Towe) to in order to coax out of the U. Of course he would love any head job and the national media would love it. I am aware he is not a head coach but at least he should be up there with LSU assistants in my eyes.
