Cowher Johnson? Fisher? Other?

Sorry that we are late on this. We are only bothering to put it up so that we can say that it is up there. Bill Cowher said no to the Wolfpack in public today. However, after the public comments Chris Mortenson commented on Erik Kuselias’ radio show (ESPN) that Cowher to State is still a possibility – not a certain ‘no’ yet.

Honestly, we have no clue if there is anything more to Mortenson’s comments regarding the chance that Cowher could still end up at State; Cowher’s comments certainly didn’t sound like they left much room for interpretation. So, we don’t want to try to talk ourselves into a situation where we try to convince ourselves that Cowher’s press conference was a tactic to get out of the spotlight.

You can take a look at the video of Cowher’s comments by clicking here. Additionally, the reliable Dave Glenn says

There is confirmation today, from both Cowher and university sources, that he is not a candidate for the N.C . State job. As reflected below, this result is the one NCSU officials expected.

If Cowher’s comments were 100% legitimate and the ride with him is over, then we’re pretty perplexed about the way that this has played out from a public relations pespective. It certainly wasn’t the smoothest of moves. One of our friends emailed this afternoon and was fuming. The text of the email went like this:

F’ing Fowler could have done this. Isn’t the whole point of Neinas to KEEP THIS EXACT THING from happening? What does he do? I’ve wanted PJ all along, so that he turned us down is not a big deal to me, but this PR disaster is exactly what we did not need. Now it is a circus and everyone can (and will) point at us and laugh. Why would BC do this to us? How can Neinas let it happen? I never would have guessed that BC would publically “Calipari” us. I love these guys who spend years talking about how they would take our job, only to publically humiliate us when it is offered to them.

We are sure that the search has been simultaneously running different parallel tracks in private, but now the public scrutiny will turn to Navy’s Paul Johnson. Earlier in the week Johnson was widely speculated by many to be a strong #2 after Coach Cowher. Did he remain the lead horse as NC State has analyzed other candidates? We don’t know. But we definitely hope that those close to the search have kept their eyes wide open and given all candidates legitimate consideration. We voiced our thoughts in this entry.

Earlier today we highlighted some comments by Steve Logan regarding Paul Johnson that some readers viewed as concerning. If we had to voice one other major concern then it would definitely be the composition of Johnson’s unimpressive staff. Take a look at these guys and you will understand our point.

Coach Johnson still has the Army/Navy game to coach this weekend, so we would not expect much to get done with him prior to the conclusion of that game therefore giving Lee Fowler and the search committee time to contemplate alternative options. Many people out there are speculating on some of these options and we just don’t have enough concrete information to do anything other than speculate as well.

The following are some random comments related to the search:

* Like Cowher, Norm Chow and David Cutcliffe both commented publicly today that they have not been contacted by NC State. Of course they haven’t. Nobody is going to be contacted by NC State until a deal is on its way to being struck. This is one of the primary purposes of hiring a consultant/search firm to help navigate the process.

* LSU’s Jimbo Fisher may have much more upside than Paul Johnson, but he could also have more downside. Fisher could easily be the next Mark Richt or Bobby Petrino; then again, he could end up being David Cutcliffe at Ole Miss.

* Where there is the greatest risk comes the greatest opportunity for big rewards. This is why Athletics Directors are paid the big bucks to make these types decisions. One can only hope that their AD has been diligent in making connections and studying coaches through the years prior to being thrown into such a position. Rumor is that it is hard to stay on top of your job eating at Jimmy V’s Steakhouse every night, coming into the office at 10am every day, or hanging out on Lake Gaston on the weekends.

* If you are an ESPN INsider then you will see some nice comments about many of the names mentioned as potential candidates for the State job in this entry highlighting the country’s Top 10 hottest assistant coaches. We will wet your whistle with the comments that they shared about the #1 assistant, Jimbo Fisher:

His name was circulated for the FSU offensive coordinator vacancy, but word is he is poised to get his own program to run. Fisher has coached under both Terry Bowden and Nick Saban. Players love him, and he’s regarded within the coaching community as a great play-caller. Has had the tag as the hot assistant for a while after consistently putting up big numbers with the Tigers’ offense. If Cincy wants an offensive guy, Fisher might be it.

* Someone made a good comment to us today – “If you be supportive of hiring Jim Grobe, then why wouldn’t support Paul Johnson”.

* Evidently, Dr. Jerry Punch has made supportive comments of former Miami coach Larry Coker in public and private. Any time that a Miami-related coach is mentioned then you can bet that Steve Logan’s name will not be far away. Logan has very strong ties with many of Miami’s coaches over the last 20 years.

PQ…why are you so certain that PJ will run 45 times per game? Did you read that article from the Washington Post? obviously you did not.

  2. choppack1 11/30/2006 at 11:59 AM #

PQ – Read my long post – if you believe that history repeats itself, PJ is much more likely to be a successful hire than Jimbo or Chow. The man has won everywhere he’s been. At Navy it’s likely he faces a talent deficiency against every division 1 A ooponent he’s playing – yet he’s still winning.

^^^”He will be Herb Sendek all over again….steady, sloid, consistant….but never great. If that’s what you want….fine. That is your perrogative.”

Are we talking about the same coach that won— not 1, but 2 Div 1 -AA National Championships??? The guy has proven he isn’t satisfied with being just “sloid and consistant.” 🙂

Houston Nutt should sound familiar to you guys. We’ve seen this role before.

Guy at a big time school in his sport with a bad contract raising interest just after we miss out on the school favorite.

Does John Calipari ring a bell?

  7. TNCSU 11/30/2006 at 12:03 PM #

Plus…. Nutt could never leave with Dick as his starting QB!

I read the article. And I will admit that while at Hawaii there were a few passes. But I also got a few other quotes:

“We run the ball because it kills the clock and keeps our defense off the field, because we dont have monster-linemen to pass protect, because we dont have a cannon-armed QB.”

Does NC State have terrific O-Linemen? Do we have a rocket-armed QB?

“I’ve heard it’s a gimmick offense….well we sure had some consistency with that gimmick didn’t we?”

Hmmmm. Doesn’t sound like he’s ashamed of that offense that you are so sure he will ditch when he gets to State.

Will you guys please quit bringing up D1-AA championships? Jesus. What’s next….high school champions? Hell why not get the guy that used to coach Richmond Senior High in NC? He’s won State championships left and right. Not too mention he’s coached better players than Johnson.

  10. pack7483 11/30/2006 at 12:08 PM #

I didn’t say he would ditch all together, but I will guarantee you this – he would not run it more than 25-30 times per game. Our athletes are on a much different level than the guys at Navy.

PQ….who should be the next coach at State?

  11. Dan 11/30/2006 at 12:11 PM #

“but I will guarantee you this – he would not run it more than 25-30 times per game”

    No one can “guarantee” anything.

No one is saying he is bad coach. He’s a good coach. Its the system. And whether or not he will change it is an unknown. And its too big of an unknown to risk a minimum 5 year committment. Add to that the recruiting questions and staff concerns and its a no-brainer.

PJ’s next step should be a school like Cincy.

  12. TNCSU 11/30/2006 at 12:11 PM #

^^^Hmmmm. Doesn’t sound like he’s ashamed of that offense that you are so sure he will ditch when he gets to State.

Why would you be ashamed? He won two championships with it – THAT’S right, I brought it up again — DAMN, he’s a winner!

Why is running the football supposed to be so bad? Remember how the NFC East used to dominate the NFL behind guys like John “the diesel” Riggins and George Rogers. You pound the football, especially when you have quality backs like brown and baker. Which by making their d-line absorb the hits instead of doing the hitting wears them out slowing them down. You know what you can do then? Give a qb all the time in the world to throw it right over the top of the D, because they are too tired to rush the qb.

Great post Choppack regarding head coaches and assistant coaches and their success rates. The thing that is ironic to me is that all the people who have expressed interest in Fisher keep talking about his proven success as a recruiter and a coordinator at a major BCS school and thus, thats the reason why he is a good hire. I ask is was that not the EXACT resume of Chuck Amato before he was hired? And it’s already been shown that two of our most successful and popular coaches came head coaching job elesewhere. Talking about not learning from our mistakes!

  15. partialqualifier 11/30/2006 at 12:16 PM #

    Dan is exactly right.

I do not think Johnson is a horrible football coach. I just cannot understand how a guy like him has gotten everyone so mesmerized. He just isnt that impressive. The only thing we know for sure about Johnson is that he is one helluva D1-AA football coach. I just dont know that that is worth $500,000 per year. And given our propensity to almost NEVER fire coaches, the next coach might be here another 10 years. That is another decade of my life spent agonizing over Wolfpack mediocrity.

the system shouldn’t be the issue anyhow. if guys have discipline any system will work, the princeton offense that everyone hates so much worked so well at princeton because it was executed with discipline! when it was run correctly at state it was beautiful to watch those backdoor cuts.

the key is finding a guy with the right intangibles. how many great coordinators have bombed in the pros or in college as head coaches? its a matter of having a guy that can grab the respect of his players and make them execute. when you get past that, play call within that system, so that you match the situation.

what makes spurrier so good is he doesn’t take crap from his players. his play calling is wonderful but he won’t hesitate to kick the star player off his team if the kid does something stupid

  18. Dan 11/30/2006 at 12:19 PM #

    “worked so well at princeton”

Yeah, in the past 25 plus years Princeton has like one win of note over a top flight school.

  19. partialqualifier 11/30/2006 at 12:19 PM #

    “He’s a winner!”

Yea, well my high school basketball coach won over 300 games and had .750 winning percentage….and guess what….UNC, NCSU, Duke, nor ECU ever hired him.

  20. test4eko 11/30/2006 at 12:26 PM #

“what makes spurrier so good is he doesn’t take crap from his players. his play calling is wonderful but he won’t hesitate to kick the star player off his team if the kid does something stupid”

Sorry, lifelong, tortured Washington Redskins fan here and I think this part of the statement is at least 50% inaccurate as history has proved that Spurrier doesn’t know the names of maybe five players on the defensive side of the ball. Most insider knowledge pointed to the inmates running the asylum while SOS was out playing an executive nine. Good college coach, but not a guy that sweats the small stuff that doesn’t pertain to drawing plays in the dirt for his offense. Just say no to anyone like that.

  21. partialqualifier 11/30/2006 at 12:28 PM #

As a longtime Redskins fan maybe you will admit that with the highest payroll in football the last three seasons Gibbs has done no better than Spurrier.

  22. test4eko 11/30/2006 at 12:30 PM #

    ^

No arguments here. We’re top heavy and I’ll be the first to admit that. But I trust Gibbs to right the ship more than I did when SOS was onboard.

Most folks here are slamming Johnson for what could also be known as Tressel Ball. I beg all of you to Google “tressel ball”. You’ll see TONS of blogs of Buckeye fans slamming Tressel for what is essentially the same game plan that Johnson “typically” goes by. The funny thing about all those Buckeye Bitchfests… none of them were generated during THIS season.

I’ll take a Johnsonized version of Tressel Ball if we’re playing for National Championships in a few years.

  24. partialqualifier 11/30/2006 at 12:50 PM #

If you Johnson can recruit like Tressel he can play whatever style he wants…but that’s a big IF. Tressel wins because he has much better players than anyone in the country. Especially with Smith(QB). I dont think I need to stress for any life-long State fan the difference between recruiting at NC State and Ohio State, but I will should you need it.

  25. packer74 11/30/2006 at 12:59 PM #

Partial. Just a reminder that our two most successful Wolfpack head coaches moved up from the small program schools of William & Mary and Furman University. As a sophomore in 72, I watched Lou Holtz take essentially the same players from the previous year’s 3-8 team and win the Peach Bowl. In 1986, Dick Sheridan orchestrated a similar turn around with his first Wolfpack team.
