Cowher Johnson? Fisher? Other?

Sorry that we are late on this. We are only bothering to put it up so that we can say that it is up there. Bill Cowher said no to the Wolfpack in public today. However, after the public comments Chris Mortenson commented on Erik Kuselias’ radio show (ESPN) that Cowher to State is still a possibility – not a certain ‘no’ yet.

Honestly, we have no clue if there is anything more to Mortenson’s comments regarding the chance that Cowher could still end up at State; Cowher’s comments certainly didn’t sound like they left much room for interpretation. So, we don’t want to try to talk ourselves into a situation where we try to convince ourselves that Cowher’s press conference was a tactic to get out of the spotlight.

You can take a look at the video of Cowher’s comments by clicking here. Additionally, the reliable Dave Glenn says

There is confirmation today, from both Cowher and university sources, that he is not a candidate for the N.C . State job. As reflected below, this result is the one NCSU officials expected.

If Cowher’s comments were 100% legitimate and the ride with him is over, then we’re pretty perplexed about the way that this has played out from a public relations pespective. It certainly wasn’t the smoothest of moves. One of our friends emailed this afternoon and was fuming. The text of the email went like this:

F’ing Fowler could have done this. Isn’t the whole point of Neinas to KEEP THIS EXACT THING from happening? What does he do? I’ve wanted PJ all along, so that he turned us down is not a big deal to me, but this PR disaster is exactly what we did not need. Now it is a circus and everyone can (and will) point at us and laugh. Why would BC do this to us? How can Neinas let it happen? I never would have guessed that BC would publically “Calipari” us. I love these guys who spend years talking about how they would take our job, only to publically humiliate us when it is offered to them.

We are sure that the search has been simultaneously running different parallel tracks in private, but now the public scrutiny will turn to Navy’s Paul Johnson. Earlier in the week Johnson was widely speculated by many to be a strong #2 after Coach Cowher. Did he remain the lead horse as NC State has analyzed other candidates? We don’t know. But we definitely hope that those close to the search have kept their eyes wide open and given all candidates legitimate consideration. We voiced our thoughts in this entry.

Earlier today we highlighted some comments by Steve Logan regarding Paul Johnson that some readers viewed as concerning. If we had to voice one other major concern then it would definitely be the composition of Johnson’s unimpressive staff. Take a look at these guys and you will understand our point.

Coach Johnson still has the Army/Navy game to coach this weekend, so we would not expect much to get done with him prior to the conclusion of that game therefore giving Lee Fowler and the search committee time to contemplate alternative options. Many people out there are speculating on some of these options and we just don’t have enough concrete information to do anything other than speculate as well.

The following are some random comments related to the search:

* Like Cowher, Norm Chow and David Cutcliffe both commented publicly today that they have not been contacted by NC State. Of course they haven’t. Nobody is going to be contacted by NC State until a deal is on its way to being struck. This is one of the primary purposes of hiring a consultant/search firm to help navigate the process.

* LSU’s Jimbo Fisher may have much more upside than Paul Johnson, but he could also have more downside. Fisher could easily be the next Mark Richt or Bobby Petrino; then again, he could end up being David Cutcliffe at Ole Miss.

* Where there is the greatest risk comes the greatest opportunity for big rewards. This is why Athletics Directors are paid the big bucks to make these types decisions. One can only hope that their AD has been diligent in making connections and studying coaches through the years prior to being thrown into such a position. Rumor is that it is hard to stay on top of your job eating at Jimmy V’s Steakhouse every night, coming into the office at 10am every day, or hanging out on Lake Gaston on the weekends.

* If you are an ESPN INsider then you will see some nice comments about many of the names mentioned as potential candidates for the State job in this entry highlighting the country’s Top 10 hottest assistant coaches. We will wet your whistle with the comments that they shared about the #1 assistant, Jimbo Fisher:

His name was circulated for the FSU offensive coordinator vacancy, but word is he is poised to get his own program to run. Fisher has coached under both Terry Bowden and Nick Saban. Players love him, and he’s regarded within the coaching community as a great play-caller. Has had the tag as the hot assistant for a while after consistently putting up big numbers with the Tigers’ offense. If Cincy wants an offensive guy, Fisher might be it.

* Someone made a good comment to us today – “If you be supportive of hiring Jim Grobe, then why wouldn’t support Paul Johnson”.

* Evidently, Dr. Jerry Punch has made supportive comments of former Miami coach Larry Coker in public and private. Any time that a Miami-related coach is mentioned then you can bet that Steve Logan’s name will not be far away. Logan has very strong ties with many of Miami’s coaches over the last 20 years.

I’m not suggesting Norm Chow as a short-timer/place-holder for BC. To be honest, I don’t think the timing will ever be “right” for Cowher.

Any of you who have worked in sales will relate–there are ALWAYS prospects that you have that will say they are interested, then reschedule an appt., reschedule again, and again, then they’ll take the appt., then push back a decision again, and again. Many times it would be better for you to move on past these prospects and stop relying on the slim chance that AT SOME POINT they’ll buy. Because 9 times out of 10 it is too late! My guess is that the by the time Cowher is ready to go with us–the timing will be wrong for us, and we will have found our long-term solution (possibly Chow’s replacement).

My suggestion is that Chow groom HIS OWN replacement–probably whoever he picks as OC–which is why I think that a Chow (for 5 years) and Jimbo Fischer as OC pairing would be brilliant!

  2. RedTerror29 11/30/2006 at 8:48 AM #

^I’d take Jimbo as OC in a heartbeat, but that would be a step down for him. I doubt he leaves LSU for less than a HC gig.

Here’s another idea, Chow with Mike Shula as his OC. Shula will have a real tough time finding another top-flight coaching gig after being canned (see Franch Solich or Ron Zook). I’m still not entirely sure he’s ready to be a head coach; he never served as an OC before taking the Bama job.

I think after some time spent learning the ropes as OC under Chow he would be more than ready to take the HC job 4-5 years down the road much wiser and better prepared than when he started at Bama. He is still very young.

Chip Alexander brought up Houston Nutt today in his article in the N and O. Did that come from left field, or what?

  4. pack7483 11/30/2006 at 8:55 AM #

Chip Alexander’s article also said LF has spoken with that search consultant dude, but did NOT have a contract! What is he waiting for??

  5. BJD95 11/30/2006 at 9:00 AM #

You would have to think that Chow would be likely to bring back Canales as his OC. I’d be cool with that.

I still prefer Jimbo to the other candidates on the board. I’m all in favor of the “high risk, high reward” approach.

  6. drhammondo 11/30/2006 at 9:02 AM #

I like the idea of Mike Shula as OC–you’re very right–he definitely was not ready to be an HC when he took the Alabama job.

I have, however, read some rumors of him being involved with Miami as an HC.

Also, anyone else see a report about ‘Bama hiring Spurrier for 7 years, $40 million? A couple of guys at work here have mentioned it but I can’t find it anywhere on the ‘net!?!?

  7. RAWFS 11/30/2006 at 9:08 AM #

You guys should just post every entry over on the ACC Basketblog, and thus save them the time of spamming your comments section every day. 😉

  8. Mike 11/30/2006 at 9:09 AM #

Chow has no HC experience. Chow does not like recruiting. I like Chow and think he had a great deal to do with Philip’s evolvement into a great QB. He is a great offensive mind. But this does not make him a great head coach.

No matter who we end up with someone is going to be unhappy. I have read posts that say “If we hire so and so, I will quit giving to the U”. I have read others that say if we dont hire this guy, I will quit giving. Come on folks, look at this from the U standpoint. Either way, they/we lose.

Trust the BOT that they will talk to many candidates and find the best solution for the red and white. I can find positives about all the names listed, and I can find negatives about all the names listed. At the end of the day, the BOT have the best interests of our program in mind. We may hire a “name” and he could flop miserably. We could hire a no-name who could turn out to be very successful. We have not talked to these guys personally – we dont know whether they have the intangibles to be good head coaches.

I will repeat – whoever we hire will make some people angry and upset, and whoever we hire will make some people happy. Whoever we hire, we have to band together and support this person completely and welcome him with open arms.

Coaches Pounce on NC State Football Recruits

  10. highonlowe 11/30/2006 at 9:13 AM #

The last thing I’ve seen is that Spurrier is definitely a significant candidate but I haven’t heard anything about that $40M. Some other interesting candidates for their job:
Paul Johnson – said to be very interested
    Jim Grobe – denied interest

I really think that those of you concerned with Bill Cowher’s public statements are missing a very important fact. His daughter goes to high school in Raleigh, and I am sure she is getting bombarded with questions on a daily basis about her dad coaching at NC State. When he decided not to coach here he had to say something publically just to get people from asking a million more times. He and NC State must have figured this was the best way to do that. He was very respectful of NC State and a class act as always. As fans we need to remember one thing….Bill Cowher has NEVER said he was coming to coach….NEVER. We have taken his statements from the past and placed them in our reality and assumed he was extremely interested. So…dont be mad at him.

  12. CarnifeX 11/30/2006 at 9:19 AM #

I’ve heard comments about Fisher, Chow, others stating that they have not been contacted about the position. Is this a formality thing where no one will go public and say that they have been contacted before an agreement is reached or is this poor searching?

  13. highonlowe 11/30/2006 at 9:27 AM #

carnifeX, that is the “correct” answer to the question unless (a) an agreement has been reached, or (b) we screw up, leak our developments, and force the coach to deny interest by publicly rejecting us (see April)

  14. old13 11/30/2006 at 9:39 AM #

As I understand it, BC said “no” to the FB HC position at NCSU. I don’t believe that he has addressed the AD position. Could this be the “loophole?”

  15. highonlowe 11/30/2006 at 9:41 AM #

that was my initial thought too old13. We have plenty of time for Cowher to be an employee of NC State. So what if its not this year.

  16. partialqualifier 11/30/2006 at 9:45 AM #

As for who the next coach will be……

I would take almost anybody besides Paul Johnson!!

    Here’s a breakdown of why:

    Important Qualities of Head Coach

1-Recruiting…must be able to recruit the types of athletes needed to compete in the ACC

2-Assembling Quality Assistants…NC State is a mid-major football program, therefore good assistants will be hard to keep. The next coach must be able to hire, fire, and keep effectively.

3-Management of Big-Time College Footbal Program….Must have a working knowledge of how a big-time ACC caliber football program works and what needs to be done to maintain success.

4-Knowledge of football and how it is played…..must either have extensive overall knowledge of the game or have exceptional of one side of the ball. Personally I would prefer an offensive coach, as it is generally known that getting a good or serviceable DC is much easier than finding a good/serviceable OC. Just use NC State the last 4 years as an example.

5-Excite the fan base and keep them enthused & engaged

Now…those of you who like to point out the weaknesses of the top assistants in this search (Fisher & Chow) please tell me at which of the above does Paul Johnson excel? I would say that he excels in none of these, with the possible exception of knowledge of the game.

He has never recruited the kinds of ahtletes needed at NC State. StateFans has pointed out his poor assistants. He has never even sniffed a Big-Time college football program. And trust me, once you hear this guy you will be as excited as you are for the Herb Sendek Reunion Day!

So please quit pointing out that the assistants havent done this or that, because neither has Johnson. Just because he has been a head coach doesnt give him any advantage in my book….unless he had coached at a similar school with positive results. If all that matters is being a head coach with a good overall record, then why not bring back Chuck…beacause he has had a shitload more success than Johnson.

  17. Great Dane Guy 11/30/2006 at 9:49 AM #

So, based on Chip A’s quote of Lee in the paper, and mentioned above, Nienas hasn’t been hired by State. Is it another group? Does SFN have any insight here?

  18. Texpack 11/30/2006 at 9:49 AM #

I have a Hog co-worker who told me earlier this season that rumors regarding Houston Nutt to NC State had surfaced in Arkansas. Despite his success this year, he is not universally loved in Pigland. It seems that prior to hiring a new OC this year his play calling / offense was deemed to be too conservative and/or boring by many in Arkansas.

  19. highonlowe 11/30/2006 at 10:06 AM #

Regarding the Mortenson comment, he gets all his insider info from his relationships with a player/coaches agent (source) so their could be some truth in he says. Do we know who Cowher’s agent is?

  20. BJD95 11/30/2006 at 10:14 AM #

It’s also POSSIBLE that he wasn’t yet aware of Cowher’s public comments, but I think that’s extremely unlikely.

  21. RTPMedic 11/30/2006 at 10:17 AM #

old13 and highonlowe, that has been my thought as well. I seem to remember reading somewhere (don’t know if it was a BC quote or not) that BC was interested in being the AD at NCSU one day. Maybe that the AD position will not be open this year but maybe next?

And, on Johnson… As things go if you hear a lot of good or bad on someone chances are that at least some if it is true. With all the downside I’m reading about Johnson do you really think that the BOT would really look at someone like that? Whoever it is will need to be able to win and do so playing a strong schedule with exciting play. The last thing we need is “Sendek-like football”.

Personally, I’m excited about the Chow and/or Fisher idea. It would be great to get both IMHO.

  22. RedTerror29 11/30/2006 at 10:24 AM #

I wouldn’t consider record-setting offensive numbers to be “Sendek-like football.”

  23. NeverGiveUp 11/30/2006 at 10:26 AM #

Drop the Chow and Fisher discussion. It is just silly. One of them may be a possibility, but discussing both is ignorant.

  24. choppack1 11/30/2006 at 10:40 AM #

PQ – I’d say PJ excels at #4 on the list – moreso than any of the coaches on your list…If you consider Jim Tressel to be one of the top 2 Division 1A coaches in Americal right now like I do, you should realize that when PJ faced him in the championship, he (Ga Southern) absolutely destroyed Tressel (Youngstown State)59-24…Has Norm Chow or Fisher ever been HC of a team and if so, what are their accomplishments?

Also, is there evidence that Chow and Fisher can dominate their rivals the way PJ dominates his?
