CNNSI’s Peter King on Philip Rivers

I think — no, I know — the two most impressive people I watched Sunday were Philip Rivers, in a win, and Drew Brees, in a loss.

I remember talking to Phil Simms before the ’04 draft, when I’d come back from doing a story in Raleigh on the North Carolina State quarterback, Rivers, who was thought to be an early- to mid-field-round draft pick. Simms was a little down on Rivers because he didn’t like his arm very much. I was high on Rivers because of a few things — his presence, his ability as a true freshman to come in on opening day and command his team with confidence, his production at a mediocre Division I school for four years, and his optimistic love of the game.

What a tremendous 24 minutes he played Sunday — six straight touchdown drives between the middle of the second quarter and early in the fourth.

*RIVERS IS THE MAN. HE IS GOING TO THE PRO BOWL THIS YEAR, AND FOR YEARS TO COME*

Rivers is actually severely handicapped in this area by currently being in a conference with Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Those 2 are always going to be ahead of Rivers in the Pro Bowl selection line, for the forseeable future anyway. If either of those 2 falter, he would also would have stiff competition from Carson Palmer (not this year, but in future years).

Don’t get me wrong, I believe Philip is pro-bowl material right now, and hope he gets the AFC’s second spot behind Peyton Manning. But I think it will take 7 more games like last weekend’s Cincinnati comeback for him to unseat either Manning or Brady.

    CC-
3 QBs make the Pro Bowl from each conference. I agree that Manning and Brady are likely to make it, but there is no reason Rivers cannot also make it.

Good news then, I thought it was limited to 2. Well, in that case he absolutely should be #3.
