CNNSI’s Peter King on Philip Rivers

I think — no, I know — the two most impressive people I watched Sunday were Philip Rivers, in a win, and Drew Brees, in a loss.

I remember talking to Phil Simms before the ’04 draft, when I’d come back from doing a story in Raleigh on the North Carolina State quarterback, Rivers, who was thought to be an early- to mid-field-round draft pick. Simms was a little down on Rivers because he didn’t like his arm very much. I was high on Rivers because of a few things — his presence, his ability as a true freshman to come in on opening day and command his team with confidence, his production at a mediocre Division I school for four years, and his optimistic love of the game.

What a tremendous 24 minutes he played Sunday — six straight touchdown drives between the middle of the second quarter and early in the fourth.

Phim Sims was down on any quaterback that was going to be better than his son! Ha!

Philip was awesome yesterday and has been good all year. PR was also featured in this weeks SI magazine, great reading, was not from Peter King, not quite sure who did the piece. When Schottenheimer gives him the chance, he does well.

Here is another ironic element…….when Trestman with Cleveland, I beleive he worked for Schottenheimer. Did not like Tman then, still dont.

Jerricho Cotchery is playing himself into the upper echelon of NFL receivers. As he showed again on the vital touchdown to beat the Patriots, he knows how to go get the ball against tight coverage.

    That’s on the next page!

I normally am not a huge fan of Peter King, but today’s column was right on. Great intro about Rutgers and I love the “his production at a MEDIOCRE Division I school for four years” comment. Someone send this to CTC and let him read this and weep. In year 7 and we are still MEDIOCRE. CTC raised the bar here at State and has produced some great NFL talent, but it just has not translated into consistent success in Raleigh.

hate to say it, but King is right

    mediocrity is a fair assessment

last season was textbook mediocrity — barely winning season, crappy bowl game

this season is poor, but Chuck’s had better seasons, so average it out to: mediocre

Cotchery’s catch on Sunday was amazing. He and Coles make a pretty dangerous tandem. Cotchery is simply a guy that you want to have on your team.

Here is something else that Peter King said on Feb. 20, 2006.

    9. I think the Chargers are nuts — with a capital N — if they let Drew Brees go. That move would haunt the franchise.

I had to hold on to this because I knew Phillip would prove to be, in time, a great NFL QB.

San Diego Union Tribune’s game story today:

CINCINNATI – It’s not like comebacks are anything new to Philip Rivers.

Why, way back in 2000, playing in something called the Micronpc.com Bowl, Rivers brought North Carolina State back from a 24-0 first-half deficit to beat Minnesota 38-30. It was the fifth time in his freshman season that Rivers rallied the Wolfpack to a victory.

Six years later, Rivers again is a freshman, at least as a starter in the NFL, but he hasn’t lost his touch…

The Tribune’s main columnist is a believer now as well:

    Where did CTC come from?

  10. Woof Wolf 11/13/2006 at 9:59 PM #

CTC = Chuck the Chest. I think he came from Pennsylvannia.

Has anyone heard any buzz about Houston Nutt from Arkansas having interest in coming to State if we fire Chuck??

  12. Heels Perspective 11/14/2006 at 12:22 AM #

Congrats to Phillip Rivers……….I wish he could QB the Panthers! Would love to see Peppers and Rivers together. I guess King could say that “Peppers came from a mediocre Div I program” as well. PR is the REAL deal and was the Real Reason for CTC’s success……….

I realize this is debatable, but IMO it is safest to look at the past 6 games for purposes of projecting the rest of Philip’s season. Week 1, Marty kept Rivers on a tight leash and didn’t have to loosen it to win easily. In week 3, Marty went into classic “Martyball” mode for the entire second half, again keeping Rivers on a tight leash, and it cost San Diego the win. I think that loss was a painful lesson to Marty, and since then, it seems to me that Marty has loosened the leash. Games like yesterday’s, when they had to have a big day from Rivers to win, should only further enhance Marty’s confidence in letting Rivers play.

I realize some will disagree with my last 6 games premise, but that’s what I’m going with. So in weeks 5-10, Rivers was 136/206 (66%) for 1596 passing yards (7.75 ypa), 10 TDs, and 2 interceptions. Project that for the remaining 7 games and add it to his season totals to date and you get:

341/514 (66.3%) for 3946 passing yards (7.68 ypa), 25 TDs, and 5 interceptions, plus 50 carries for 79 rushing yards

Compare those projections to Drew Brees’s numbers last year in San Diego:

323/500 (64.6%) for 3576 passing yards (7.15 ypa), 24 TDs, and 15 interceptions, plus 21 carries for 49 yards and 1 TD rushing

Rivers is on pace to surpass Brees in every area except rushing TDs, of all things.

I originally posted this stuff on a fantasy football message board. I doubt everyone here plays fantasy football, but consider that the numbers above ranked Brees as the 7th best fantasy QB in the NFL last season, with 271 fantasy points. The projections for Rivers above would have ranked him as the third best QB last season, with 300 fantasy points, behind only Palmer (318) and Brady (310).

I knew he was going to be great, but I thought it might take a bit longer for him to show what we all saw at State.

San Diego certainly looks golden right now. Got Rivers, Merriman, and Kaeding for Eli… Rivers alone is better than Eli, and the others make it a landslide. They also obviously made the right call when they passed on paying Brees $10M to stay.

Great to see PR doing so well but we knew he would based on what we saw from him for four years. The tragedy is we did not do even better with him here. His senior season, to me, was one of the most disappointing in our history. Too much talent and too few wins. Starting to sound like a familiar theme around CTC’s program.

  15. Pack92 11/14/2006 at 8:45 AM #

Thank heavens Rivers is finally getting the respect he deserves. He was robbed of the Heisman and had to endure the humiliation of being”passed over/passed off” for Eli Manning. The same Eli Manning who DID NOT show up to be shown up by Rivers at the Senior Bowl. Well, well, maybe the name “Manning” does not make you a superstar QB in the NFL after all. Maybe it puts you in the category of overrated punk who, like Rivers, is getting exactly what he deserves.

“CTC = Chuck the Chest. I think he came from Pennsylvannia.”

They called him Chesty at FSU, fwiw…

  17. BoKnowsNCS71 11/14/2006 at 10:22 AM #

PAck Atack — I sincerely doubt that Houston Nutt would leave a program like Arkansas to come to ours. He has Reggie Herring coaching defense (the guy who gave us the #1 defense in the nation a few years back), a pretty good quarterback, and lots of support from that school.

Arkansas fans are rabid about footabll and Nutt is getting them back in the game. They would really have to tick him off or we would have to find a ton of money to get him to leave a perfect situation.

Would really like to know the source of the buzz.

  18. partialqualifier 11/14/2006 at 10:46 AM #

As for the Houston Nutt thing….

Not trying to add to rumor ( because I actually do not think he would come to NC State), but I was reading an article about Butch Davis last week that mentioned Arkansas as a possible place for him if he didnt go to UNC. I was shocked to read it because I thought he was doing a pretty good job. Apparently, for some reason, something is going on there. That’s probably where the rumor came from. He may not be there next year, but I havent seen anything linking him to NC State. That was probably someone’s wishful thinking.

I especially enjoy reminding my Giant fan buddies about that trade in 2004.
Lil’ Eli Manning for Philip Rivers, $, and two more draft picks (SD picked up Merriman and Knaeding with these picks). Talk about a stupid move.

At half time of the San Diego game I looked over to a friend and said the nation is about to learn who Philip Rivers is and thank god it actually happened.

  21. GoldenChain 11/14/2006 at 2:59 PM #

I was thinking about this very topic Sunday.
Yes Brees puts up gaudy numbers but Rivers knows how to win! This time last year the Blots were 5-4 enroute to a 9-7 campaign and missing the playoffs. Now they are 7-2 and no reason to expect any worse down the stretch.

  22. packbackr04 11/14/2006 at 5:37 PM #

RIVERS IS THE MAN. HE IS GOING TO THE PRO BOWL THIS YEAR, AND FOR YEARS TO COME… sorry for all caps, didnt realize till i was done

  23. WolfPup35 11/14/2006 at 8:47 PM #

When the Chargers roll into the playoffs, then all those people who STILL doubt Phillip’s abilities and sheer will to win will see what all of Wolfpack Nation has known since 2000…Philip Rivers is destined to wear a ring or three.

I play fantasy and was ridiculed at the start of the year when I took Rivers with a late round draft pick in a couple of different leagues. I’m the one laughing now.
