Why Tonight’s Game is HUGE

I doubt many of you need explanation, but I’ll throw it out there anyway. I’m not sure there has been a bigger game in Chuck Amato’s career at NC State. It certainly has the feel of a major turning point, one way or the other.

What a win would mean: A 2-0 start in the conference, with both wins against consensus “first division” teams. The possibility of real momentum, knowing that a home win against Wake would put us at 3-0 in ACC play, with very winnable road games at Maryland and Virginia up next. The schedule would set up well for a possible showdown game at Clemson for the division title (even though it would be a very hard game to win, at least we’d get our shot). Assuming we somehow beat Clemson, we would hold tiebreaker edges over everybody, meaning we’d control our destiny if we could just get to 6-2.

What a loss would mean: Our overall record would drop to 2-3, with 4 of our 6 remaining ACC games on the road. The Wake game would be do or die for conference/decent bowl positioning. A division title would probably require State to run the table. We would only have the Evans miracle keeping the season from being a complete disaster, as the losses to Akron and USM look even worse after those teams’ performance in recent weeks.

Let there be no doubt – we have a national stage to take advantage of a fantastic opportunity to establish some real program momentum. Amato simply must get it done tonight. He’s not likely to get such a chance again, with a weak ACC so ripe for the picking.

Think the media knows anything? With 1:30 left in the BC game here were the comments from the tv announcers:

“Tom O’Brien has to be really pleased…”

“Virginia Tech looks like the class of the ACC.”

“And for Chuck Amato, 1-3 with Florida State up next.”

    Life is good…

Good point about Dwayne Dixon. Dwayne became available when Urban Myer went to Florida and brought all or most of his staff.

If Chuck get axed, somebody will snap him up quicker than a cat can lick his a$$ — and his staff will go with him and we start all over again. Will I live long enough to see us where we want to be.

The last two weeks have vindicated Trestman. I was rolling when Fowler said he looked like a geek, I’ll point out so does Joe Gibbs. He called a safe game two weeks ago to get Evans feet wet, and then opened the WHOLE playbook up against FSU. It wasn’t only that he had balance, the drive of the game (though certainly not the most important) was the first touchdown drive. 5 passes and 80 yards. It said to FSU we will throw the ball and you can’t stop it. It pushed the safeties back and slowed down the blitz, along with building confidence. Our corners were definitely yielding the 10 yards on every passing down, their corners probably should have done the same. All three safeties played well, and so did our corners, only the Touchdown to Warren was a truly blown assignment, Neal just got beat on a good catch. If this trend continues, only the Clemson game on the road would be a tough win. I think FSU is every bit as good as GT, and Davis covered Carr (6’5″) as good as you can, he got beat once, and Heath made Carr pay for it. I bet we beat Wake next week, and then the true test begins, which for CTC has been beating bad teams. Until I see that happen, I won’t believe we’ve made the next step. But if we do figure it out…..

Pull for Wake hard tomorrow, because I would love to have a two game cushion over Clemson when we go down there. That will certainly be a big game, and I’d love to see our guys with no pressure on them, knowing even a loss won’t knock us out of the penthouse.

We need updates on Chris Wright!!! Also noticed J.J. Hickson cancelled his Florida trip. If (and that is a BIG IF), Wright commits on Tuesday, that is a pretty good four day stretch for Wolfpack fans. Wouldn’t ya say?!?!
