Record Day for Wolfpackers in the NFL

I was having a conversation with my buddy at Carter-Finley on Saturday when we started talking about Sunday’s match-ups in the NFL. My buddy commented that “the NFL and Sunday’s takeson a real different feel for me now that we have so many former Wolfpackers playing so prominently on Sundays”. Yesterday did nothing to prove this thinking wrong.

On Sunday,

* Tory Holt became the FASTEST wide receiver in NFL history to reach 10,000 receiving yards in a career. Holt caught three touchdown passes in a stinging loss at home to Sean Locklear’s Seattle Seahawks. “His eight catches produced 154 yards in front of 65,592 at the Edward Jones Dome, pushing him past 10,000 yards for his career. He said that was a milestone he set for himself when he entered the league eight years ago.”

* Philip Rivers had his best game as a professional lighting up the 49ers with career highs in yards, attempts, and completions. Rivers went 29-for-39 for 334 yards and 2 touchdowns, passing for over 300 yards for the first time in his career. At one point, Rivers completed 13 consecutive passes falling just two short of Dan Fouts’ franchise record. Overall, PR ended the day with an astounding 116.8 quarterback rating.

* This link will take you to a great article about Rivers and the Chargers offense.

Look, if Rivers, basically a rookie in third-year clothing, really is this good – and he’s given us little reason to think otherwise – we really may have something here. This is one of the NFL’s elite teams and may have more good players than all of them. The key to the lock is not to screw it up, and the quarterback can open the door.

If Rivers really is this good – and if he keeps improving as he has – possibilities are endless, especially when your running game features LaDainian Tomlinson (four touchdowns yesterday), your wide receivers are beyond solid, and your tight end, Antonio Gates, is straight out of “Star Trek? (did the Niners actually put a linebacker on Gates during that 57-yard catch-and-run for the first touchdown? Bad teams do bad things).

“Who ever thought you’d see him one-on-one out there with a linebacker?? asked Rivers, not expecting an answer.

We’ve said all along Rivers is going to have his ebbs and flows, that he’s going to make mistakes. We were wrong. He’s made few errors. And they all have, the Elways, the Unitases, the Montanas, the Marinos, the Grahams. They got over them. This kid is about a 10-year veteran. He played quarterback in the womb. He’s been marvelous.

* Alvis Whitted was the only Oakland Raider to provide any offense for the pitiful Raiders.

WTG Philip and Torry. In spite of missing out on PR for my fantasy team (how can you turn down PManning?) and playing against him yesterday, I am thrilled to see PR have a great day. Thanks to Torry I still won my game. Now if only I can get KRob to pick up the pace.

of course I was routing for Rivers all the way, and SD and Carolina have been my favs for the super bowl all year, BUT i was kind of hoping Manny Lawson would get a hit on Rivers just ONCE… you know, just to say hello

    =)

I told a guy on the flight home from the blow-out Kansas bowl game that it was just one more Heisman performance. Well, he didn’t win the Heisman as it it just a popularity contest and is pretty much ruled by the polls. However, , in the pro’s you can’t take away from a guy due to the school he attended, whether his name is Manning, or a ridiculous poll. You either get it done or you don’t. No matter what the talking heads say about your throwing style you either win or lose. Phillip Rivers IS the real deal and has been since he stepped into spring practice when he was 17 years old. Pinpoint accuracy and natural decision making ability cannot be overstated for a pro QB. There will be LOTS of crow eaten over Rivers before he gets done.

Way to go to ALL the Wolfpack alumni who had a great Sunday.

I have Torry and Philip on my fantasy team and yesterday was the first time I’ve ever scored more than 100 points.

The Torry catch-bobble-catch highlight was phenomenal.

Pack92^^ i agree with the hesiman being a popularity contest, because in Holts senior year i thought he had a hesiman caliber season. not to win it, but at least get invited to NY

I am soooo happy for PR! All I’ve heard and read is how big a mistake it was for the Bolts to let Brees go.
If PR keeps it up (and I don’t see why he shouldn’t) maybe SFN can have a ‘send in your link’ campaign for all those who said the PR move was a mistake for SD!

What was amazing about Holt’s senior year is that he didn’t even win the Biletnikoff(sp) Award.

It was hard to imagine Philip not being a very good QB in the NFL.

If Holt stays healthy this season it will mark his 7th in a row going for over 1300 yards.
    Previous record: 4 seasons.
And think about it: Holt has done this well playing opposite Isaac Bruce and playing on teams that threw to a variety of possession receivers like Faulk, Phroel, Kevin Curtis last year, and Steven Jackson this year.
Other receivers you hear mentioned are generally on teams where they are lone Indians (Steve Smith, TO, Randy Moss, Marvin Harrison).

Hate that McCargo broke his foot last week. He was getting playing time also.

While at the game on Saturday, I was looking at the retired numbers and thought: How sweet would it have been if Torry and Rivers had played together? Can you imagine the numbers they could have put up?

  12. packpigskinfan23 10/16/2006 at 11:15 AM #

McCargo is out?!?! damn… that sucks

^^^ I’ve pondered that amazing thought time and time again

Mario had five unassisted tackles yesterday.

Philip SHOULD have been the NCSU/ACC’s first #1 pick. But no one hyped him the way Eli got the hype…oh well! Time will show it to be so! Not that Eli is crap, but Philip will be better.

  16. packpigskinfan23 10/17/2006 at 8:35 AM #

Phillip will be a hall of famer

    Golden Chain,

Marvin Harrison is a “lone Indian.” That is news to us.

    Sincerely,

    Reggie Wayne
    Brandon Stokley
    Dallas Clark

    ^^^^
Granted Wayne is a decent receiver, the others, ain’t all that.
    http://sports-att.espn.go.com/nfl/teams/stats?team=ind
Every team should have receivers who have caught for 124 & 67 yards through 5 games dude (Clarke/Stokley respectively).
    BUT:
Bruce has 12,000+ yards compared to wayne with 4500.
That means Bruce has averaged 1161/yr over 11 seasons vs Wayne with 757/yr over his 6.
Meanwhile Holt has 1251/yr avg (and the fastest receiver ever to 10k) and Harrision has averaged 1161/yr like Bruce.
Bottom line Holt has had much stiffer competition for passes than Harrision (which was my original point).
Receivers like Harrison, TO, Moss, and Smith don’t have the competition for the ball that Holt has had over his career yet Holt still is on a record setting pace.
I don’t mind debating anything but have your facts and figures and not just your feelings.

^we all love to debate on here but hey man… we dont ALL have time for “facts and figures”

I think concidering his size, Steve Smith is one of the best in the buisness. And thankfully his competition as far as balls thrown to him is comming up. Drew Carter is on his way to being an awesome reciever. Keyshawn is #2 like he should be, and seems to be happy with that.

I agree though, that Holt is bye far one of the most exciting/talented recievers in the world. I would have him long before TO/Moss/Harrison/Johnson… and MAYBE Steve Smith….
