Noon, Noon, Noon & Announcing (Updated 2:35pm)

Noon Kickoffs
After losing to both Akron and Wake Forest in our only noon kickoffs of the season, NC State has been scheduled for the noon kickoff slot (on miserable Raycom/Lincoln Financial) for the next two weeks. Link to comprehensive schedule and link to an entry about the inconvenient nature of the Akron scheduling (as if the inconvenience of scheduling during the State Fair this past weekend wasn’t enough).

October 21: NC State @ Maryland, Noon
October 28: NC State @ Virginia, Noon

ACC Broadcasts
I was at Saturday’s game and therefore didn’t have to sit through the Lincoln Financial/Raycom broadcast. If you have a Premium subscription to Pack Pride then you can click on this link to a thread titled “Lincoin Fin has to do something about the anouncers”. Evidently the announcing is so weak that some Wolfpackers found a silver lining in the loss:

After the game I said to my roommate: “Well, the positive is I can erase this immediately from the DVR and not suffer through the horrible announcers”. They make the Chris Speilman/Pam Ward team seem great by comparison.

One particular item of note was highlighted by some posters when Martin evidently said something to the effect of:

“The question [whether a pass was complete or incomplete] is whether or not his knee was down before he stopped bobbling the ball.”

Related Comments
Related to this entry are some of the comments made in this previous entry on SFN:

* With the recent purchase of Jefferson-Pilot Insurance by Lincoln Financial, our beloved JP Sports is officially dead. Everyone on Tobacco Road has fond memories of ‘sailing with the Pilot’ during classic basketball telecasts; but JP’s football coverage always left a lot for want. This article classicly discuss JP’s SEC football telecasts and can easily be applied to JP’s (sometimes painful) ACC productions.

* Relatedly, I remember making a few critical comments of JP’s broadcasts – particularly ‘Doc’ Walker – a few years ago when the original Statefans.com was launched in 2000. It wasn’t long before I received a critical email of my own from JP’s very own Steve Martin. Martin didn’t take too kindly to me not-so-constructive criticism despite the fact that I was obviously speaking more directly about “Doc” than Martin. It will be interesting to see what improvements, if any, Lincoln Financial chooses to make in their future broadcasts.

Miami-FIU
As difficult as Martin & “Doc” Walker can be to stomach, at least they aren’t these idiots. I must say that the first time that I saw the Miami-FIU fight film I immediately noticed the odd and unprofessional response of the announcers. You know it is bad when you pick up on it in the middle of such concentration of watching the fight. The N&O’s blog has a great piece on this topic that just got posted this afternoon.

For more fun, just imagine the brawl involved N.C. State and that it was Wolfpack radio sideline reporter Tony Haynes, instead of Thomas, threatening to throw down.

I watched the entire game with the sound off. Those guys reminded me of the cowboy from “Dilbert,” who always says idiotic things that in some way almost make sense: “This is like tanglin’ with a sack full o’ bull squirrels.”

  2. BoKnowsNCS71 10/16/2006 at 3:37 PM #

I usually turn off the sound and put WPTF (or the Wolfpack Radio Network) and listed to them. Can be a problem with digital TV due to delay but better reporting and color commentary than on the TV.

Good point Bo. Nice to support our local guys too, except Hahn is as clueless as Martin and Doc. I like Johnny and Tony and they do add to the commentary.

And if the receiver is still bobbling the ball when the knee hits, it should be incomplete, right? After all, knee is down, receiver is down. Thus the play has to be incomplete, player is down.

  4. Sam92 10/16/2006 at 3:42 PM #

the broadcast was totally bush league

and what’s with mike hogewood? ok, i’m sure he’s a decent guy, but why don’t they get a good looking young woman to be the “man” on the sidelines like everybody else does these days?

  5. choppack1 10/16/2006 at 3:46 PM #

Well – that significantly reduces the “fun” of my upcoming UVa trip. “Yipee, everyone set their alarm for 6 AM so we can all get there at a decent amount of time to tailgate!”

IF we take care of bidness, we can at least get a good kickoff time for the GaTech game. I’d love another 8pm ESPN2 game!

  6. 74eegrad 10/16/2006 at 4:25 PM #

I don’t mind Martin too much, but Doc adds nothing at all except stuff like “I like the way that tight end runs” or “These guys are really getting after it” over and over and over after every play. How about a little insight into what the teams are trying to do? Anyone can contribute the same stuff Doc says. Martin at least is generally correct in who has the ball and who made the tackle, which is what he is there for.

Also, Hogewood reminds me too much of a politician with a smarmy smile and fake enthusiasm.

i was reminded of the bad news bears when i saw the fight b/w the u and FIU. And the commentary was almost funny if it wasnt such a tragic situation…

speaking of funny commentary, they should bring in the actor from “best in show” the one was always talking about how much weight he could bench press and never talking about the dogs… those Lincoln broadcasts are garbage, at least bring in some comedy. come on!

any best in show nerds out there?

isnt the GaTech game homecoming, with the COMBINED Red&White game sceduled after it?! I have doubts it will be an 8pm game.

or is the Red&White before the football game?!

SFN: Check the schedule. Think that the R&W game has been moved to a Wedneday night in Reynolds with the women’s program

  9. BJD95 10/16/2006 at 4:57 PM #

^^ “Best in Show” is a great movie. “Waiting for Guffman (all the same actors) is even better, if you haven’t seen that.

  10. packbackr04 10/16/2006 at 5:06 PM #

Guffman is excellent, there is also “A mighty WInd” which is awesome as well. but the best movie from that genre is “SPINAL TAP” by rob reiner. and it has some of the same actors… but classic stuff.
“when you need that extra little you know, push over the cliff. this one goes to e-l-e-v-e-n!”
“”but why wouldnt you just make ten luder and make that the loudest?”
“because this one goes to eleven!?!?!?”

  11. Hoosyodaddy81 10/16/2006 at 5:19 PM #

yeah GaTech is Homecoming so it definately won’t be at 8, although homecoming on espn2 would be pretty neat. I think the red/white game is usually before the football game right?

  12. choppack1 10/16/2006 at 5:23 PM #

“isnt the GaTech game homecoming, with the COMBINED Red&White game sceduled after it?! I have doubts it will be an 8pm game.”

We better not pass up on 8pm game on ESPN or ESPN2 for homecoming. That makes no sense whatsoever.

ESPN: We’d like to show your game at 8PM on primetime in probably our most-watched spot next to Thursday night…

Lee: Well, that would be our homecoming game – do you have a noon kickoff time as an option?

  13. Micky McCarthy 10/16/2006 at 5:47 PM #

Tom Tom drums from the visiting band, cheerleader bullhorns, and random conversations from section 6 are among the things you’ll hear on a JP telecast. Do they even mic the field?

JP could make Baton Rouge on a Saturday night sound like a morgue.

  14. Micky McCarthy 10/16/2006 at 5:48 PM #

…and JP loves them some Wake Forest.

  15. Mr O 10/16/2006 at 7:12 PM #

I can never figure out why Homecoming is a big deal.

  16. Micky McCarthy 10/16/2006 at 8:41 PM #

Mr O is right. Its not like our horrific administration goes out of there way to make it a special occasion. Just another game, isolated five miles away from campus.

  17. newswolf 10/16/2006 at 10:27 PM #

I think BJD should have have a running blog of Doc and Steve’s dumbest comments of the day

  18. newswolf 10/16/2006 at 10:32 PM #

that article linked about the SEC writer talking about “JP” games is classic.

Some clarification on the unrelated parts of some previous posts. 1) Fred Willard plays the announcer of the dog show. He’s probably the funniest man in history. Everything that guy does is golden. You should check out DC Follies, where he plays the bartender to puppets of 80s politicians. 2)Reiner directed Spinal Tap but like all the others, written by Christopher Guest. Eugene Levy helped on the later movies Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, and the newest one, A Mighty Wind. Sorry, nothing about the real topic.

    Doc:

“I tell you. Coach Roof has this Duke team F I R E D up! The Seminoles better chickity check themselves.”

  21. tractor57 10/17/2006 at 5:27 AM #

The JP telecasts of football have always been barely acceptable but now with Lincoln Financial in control they have become truly awful.

  22. RAWFS 10/17/2006 at 8:13 AM #

The ACC needs to dump this contract. Period.

  23. WufPirate 10/17/2006 at 8:16 AM #

    Who is Daryl Blackman? (Dar-rell)

And why is Toney Baker now Andre Brown and vice versa?

Also, who is “Jehrrin James” (Geron)

You’d think they might study the pronunciations when they have a week to prepare for it.

  24. joe 10/17/2006 at 8:23 AM #

After Spinal Tap came out, for a while you could buy knobs for your guitar amps that went to 11. 🙂

  25. Mr O 10/17/2006 at 9:15 AM #

If the ACC did drop these telecasts, then a lot of people that don’t go to games would be upset. For those of us who go to most games(including road games), then dropping these horrible 12:00 kickoffs would the best thing that could happen.

And it might even burn me a game or two if there is a road game a long ways away that isn’t shown because of no Lincoln Financial contract.
