Live Blogging

We are going to use this entry to make some random comments during today’s game, but we won’t be doing a full-out “Live Blog”.

Our friends at Section Six are running a Live Blog for the State-Maryland game. You can click here for a direct link to his comments. Don’t forget to check into our Maryland preview just below this entry on the front page.

3:55 to go in 1Q

* This is one of the first games all season where it seems our offense is actually staying on the field long enough in the early part of the game to potentially have an impact later in the game.

* ANOTHER wasted timeout. I don’t know why we even discuss it since we know it is just a part of the way that Coach Amato’s teams are managed on game day.

* Pretty unimpressed with Maryland’s crowd. Lots of empty seats

* Lots of running plays being called. No complaints. It is just interesting how different each game is called on offense. 7 run plays and 2 pass plays to this point in the game.

Approx 2:00 to go in 1Q

* We aren’t dominating field position, but the field is working to our advantage…scratch that. Maryland just ate us up on a screen

* I HATE the new rules regarding receiving punts and returns. Opponents now intentionally get up in the face of our returners before they can catch the ball with no concern for penalties now that there is no halo rule.

* Nice to see the ACC Officials FINALLY are calling obvious holds. Where was this crew LAST WEEK?

End 1Q / Beg 2Q: UMd FG Drive

* Gotta love Lincoln Financial coverage. On one play, they couldn’t follow the ball with the camera and we missed a Maryland pass completion. Before Maryland ran a 3rd down play, they showed us NC State’s statistics for 3rd down conversions.

* Maryland wanted a pass interference call in the end zone on the Pack’s 3rd down defense. Fascinatingly, the Maryland scoreboard actually showed their ticket-buying fans the replay of the controversial play on the video scoreboard. Sure would be nice if NC State fans got that kind of treatment in Carter-Finley.

10:30 in 2Q

* What in the hell is so difficult about calling a pass play every now and then today? Obviously we *think* that we can run the ball on the Terps. But, we may want to start looking at 2nd and 16 as needing 2 downs as opposed to running up the middle and putting ourselves in 3rd and long.

* Let’s just say it – John Deraney’s punting has gotten worse and worse since the middle of last year.

* Hint to NC State defense — Maryland is going to run screens today similar to Wake’s reverses last week.

4Q: Blackman’s jump into the end zone

I have had it. I have had it. I have had it.

How f’ing stupid can our players CONTINUE to be for SEVEN YEARS of ridiculous celebration penalties? Seriously?

Don’t get me wrong…I KNOW that our players are called for the same stupid shit that other teams are NOT flagged for. I know that it happens because I watch college football every weekend and I see other teams’ players do the exact same things that our players do and not get flags. But that doesn’t mean that our players do not know that they must do things better and smarter than other teams.

Darrell Blackman’s AWESOME punt return that ended with an uncalled for dive into the end zone. It was stupid. It was uncalled for. And it was 100% consistent with the behavior of NC State players for the last 7 years. (Most recently, Brian Clark was called for an identical “jumping into the end zone” penalty against Georgia Tech last year. Wasn’t Blackman on last year’s squad?)

Jiga–I definitely agree about Deraney, and the longer we keep wearing down his leg, the worse late-game situations will be for us as the year progresses. Because 40+ yarders will not be an option.

  2. drhammondo 10/21/2006 at 2:16 PM #

Is it just me, or does their punter/KO guy look like a linebacker?

  3. drhammondo 10/21/2006 at 2:26 PM #

If there was ever a time that we needed our defense to step up and get a takeaway, it would be now

  4. Akula Wolf 10/21/2006 at 2:28 PM #

This one’s in the books. But at least we got a 40+ yard punt.

I wouldn’t count on a TO anytime. I just doesn’t happen for us anymore unless it’s an errant pass. Can’t figure out why were are so TO anemic for so long but I’ve just accepted it as Chucky Ball. Just like, no killer instinct on Offense, it’s just the type of game he coaches. I keep waiting for it to change, hoping, praying, that One Day, it’ll happen.

Come on Pack, you have to Want It for 60 minutes, not just 15 or 30.

Our offensinve line is following suit with what I thought would happen all year….be nonexistant. We lose today because we cannot score without a competent offensive line. In sever years CTC has not done a good job of recruiting in this area and it must improve.

  7. drhammondo 10/21/2006 at 2:32 PM #

What an IDIOTIC dive into the endzone! Our team HAS to know better than that!

  8. drhammondo 10/21/2006 at 2:32 PM #

But what a HUGE play to put us back in this game!

  9. 1.21 Jigawatts 10/21/2006 at 2:34 PM #

It’s a stupid rule, but IT’S A RULE. One that we already learned last year at GT.

Of course 15 yard penalty’s after scoring have never hurt us before have they? (Akron)

  10. Slader4881 10/21/2006 at 2:35 PM #

was that really a big play ? I thought we forgot how to make big plays

  11. MatSci94 10/21/2006 at 2:36 PM #

The penalty in the Akron game was for a player running on the field w/o a helmet. If the NCAA wants to flag that play, they need to do it *every time*. How many of those did they throw on Reggie Bush?

  12. drhammondo 10/21/2006 at 2:36 PM #

Ladies and gents somehow, someway, this just became a ballgame again!

  13. 1.21 Jigawatts 10/21/2006 at 2:38 PM #

Yes, I know why we got the 15 yards in the Akron game, doesn’t change the fact that we had to kick off from the 20 instead of the 35.

So glad I opened my mouth about the lack of TO’s and then the pack proves me wrong.

  14. drhammondo 10/21/2006 at 2:39 PM #

Wait, I guess I forgot that we can’t get a drive going without an O-line.

  15. 1.21 Jigawatts 10/21/2006 at 2:39 PM #

OMG, the question isn’t will our tackles block but CAN they block?

  16. drhammondo 10/21/2006 at 2:40 PM #

I hate these announcers–here they are talking about our O-lineman being in Daniel’s face because of “pressure”. HE WALKED BACKWARD INTO DANIEL WITH NO DEFENDER IN HIS FACE!

  17. 1.21 Jigawatts 10/21/2006 at 2:42 PM #

“They’re bringing it” “We Must Protect This HOOWWUSE” Classic Walker.

  18. drhammondo 10/21/2006 at 2:42 PM #

Daniel doesn’t have this big of a miracle in him–game over after that first down!

  19. 1.21 Jigawatts 10/21/2006 at 2:46 PM #

It was game over after the 2 fumbles at our end of the field in the 3rdQ. They gave us just enough hope to stay tuned till 6 mins left in the game before the O-Line decided it was time for the game to be over and kill the big MO after the kickoff return TO.

I’ve yet to find any good in this game from us other than Blackmon’s Punt Return for a TD. The rest will classify under Bad & UGLY

  20. drhammondo 10/21/2006 at 2:50 PM #

I agree. Apparently the only people that Chuck gives his “we’ve gotta win the turnover battle” spiel to is sideline reporters. Because he obviously is not talking about it with his coaches or players.

  21. drhammondo 10/21/2006 at 2:54 PM #

Yeah…like we’ve got a job at executing an onside kick. Keyword in that being “execution” (not our strongsuit).

  22. 1.21 Jigawatts 10/21/2006 at 2:56 PM #

I’m never one to call for a coach’s head before the season is over and I’m not going to right now. I will however point out some simple observations and a conclusion.

Chuck is a great recruiter and probably a hell of a DC. But he (and his assistants) can’t coach a game or get the Most out of the Majority of his players (this is also the responsibility of his assistants).

I hope he proves me wrong, he’s got 5 games remaining on the season against Good and down right Horrible opponents. So far though, through 7 games, we’ve looked good in only 2.

So Go Pack, Go Chuck. I REALLY want this to work, please please please, learn from your mistakes and become that great coach we all want you to be.

  23. drhammondo 10/21/2006 at 2:57 PM #

Quick poll–anyone here even remember the last time that the ‘Pack even ATTEMPTED an onside kick in a game?

  24. Wolf-n-Atl 10/21/2006 at 2:59 PM #

do we have to take the timeout after the kickoff or does the clock stop?

  25. Woof Wolf 10/21/2006 at 3:07 PM #

Clock starts when they spot the ball. New rule this year.

I remember we attempted amd recovered an onside kick in the Blue Bonnet bowl in ’73.
