Live Blogging

We are going to use this entry to make some random comments during today’s game, but we won’t be doing a full-out “Live Blog”.

Our friends at Section Six are running a Live Blog for the State-Maryland game. You can click here for a direct link to his comments. Don’t forget to check into our Maryland preview just below this entry on the front page.

3:55 to go in 1Q

* This is one of the first games all season where it seems our offense is actually staying on the field long enough in the early part of the game to potentially have an impact later in the game.

* ANOTHER wasted timeout. I don’t know why we even discuss it since we know it is just a part of the way that Coach Amato’s teams are managed on game day.

* Pretty unimpressed with Maryland’s crowd. Lots of empty seats

* Lots of running plays being called. No complaints. It is just interesting how different each game is called on offense. 7 run plays and 2 pass plays to this point in the game.

Approx 2:00 to go in 1Q

* We aren’t dominating field position, but the field is working to our advantage…scratch that. Maryland just ate us up on a screen

* I HATE the new rules regarding receiving punts and returns. Opponents now intentionally get up in the face of our returners before they can catch the ball with no concern for penalties now that there is no halo rule.

* Nice to see the ACC Officials FINALLY are calling obvious holds. Where was this crew LAST WEEK?

End 1Q / Beg 2Q: UMd FG Drive

* Gotta love Lincoln Financial coverage. On one play, they couldn’t follow the ball with the camera and we missed a Maryland pass completion. Before Maryland ran a 3rd down play, they showed us NC State’s statistics for 3rd down conversions.

* Maryland wanted a pass interference call in the end zone on the Pack’s 3rd down defense. Fascinatingly, the Maryland scoreboard actually showed their ticket-buying fans the replay of the controversial play on the video scoreboard. Sure would be nice if NC State fans got that kind of treatment in Carter-Finley.

10:30 in 2Q

* What in the hell is so difficult about calling a pass play every now and then today? Obviously we *think* that we can run the ball on the Terps. But, we may want to start looking at 2nd and 16 as needing 2 downs as opposed to running up the middle and putting ourselves in 3rd and long.

* Let’s just say it – John Deraney’s punting has gotten worse and worse since the middle of last year.

* Hint to NC State defense — Maryland is going to run screens today similar to Wake’s reverses last week.

4Q: Blackman’s jump into the end zone

I have had it. I have had it. I have had it.

How f’ing stupid can our players CONTINUE to be for SEVEN YEARS of ridiculous celebration penalties? Seriously?

Don’t get me wrong…I KNOW that our players are called for the same stupid shit that other teams are NOT flagged for. I know that it happens because I watch college football every weekend and I see other teams’ players do the exact same things that our players do and not get flags. But that doesn’t mean that our players do not know that they must do things better and smarter than other teams.

Darrell Blackman’s AWESOME punt return that ended with an uncalled for dive into the end zone. It was stupid. It was uncalled for. And it was 100% consistent with the behavior of NC State players for the last 7 years. (Most recently, Brian Clark was called for an identical “jumping into the end zone” penalty against Georgia Tech last year. Wasn’t Blackman on last year’s squad?)

Why did we kill ourselves with a Stone option on our best drive of the day?

    One word STUPID

  2. BJD95 10/21/2006 at 1:21 PM #

And we took the FB dive option, too. Also, why not go for it on 4th and 3 at the 40?

I’m so glad to see that Trestman and Co. have added to the playbook. Instead of building on Evans timing and quik release to some of the recievers we have added the option running play. Too bad we have to take Evans out and put Stone in, it could serve as a wrinkle in an otherwise “never needs ironing” pair of Dockers pants offense.

Why is for every single game the team never is ready to play in the first half?
And we might as well just start the game in the second half for the noon games. Its like everyone is still asleep.

An example of how clueless Chuck is:

On the potential Baker fumble the TV showed Chuck looking for a timeout while one of his other coaches was running after him screaming NO! Timeout. It is easy to see we needed to either run a quick play so they cant review it or just call the next play on the sideline while the review happens. Of course Chuck could never figure this out on his own.

Please tell me I’m not the only one that saw this.

On a bright note: we have a sack and a hurry on the QB today. We’re getting in there, but they’re slipping some screens on us. Its up to LB’s and DB’s to shed some blocks and keep those from becoming huge plays. I’m seeing Lowery and others having some serious problems fighting off the initial block.
I am convinced that the entire football team wakes up between 11 and 11:30 am each day. I honestly don’t even know how they arrive at away games on time unless they spend the night.

I saw it during potential review. There seems to be a problem with play calling today and whether we have the right personnel out there. The first TO and the play you mentioned where we wee whistled for illegal procedure show this problem. Going to make things real interest if we start a running QB and passing QB system making sure its the right guy out there.
I made a reference yesterday to the thought that we have potentiallt two future NFL running backs playing for State right now. I need to make myself clear. I will stand by this statement firmly if these two ever learn how to block. They are clueless reading where the pressure is coming from. It’s ok though, I think most NFL scouts realize that when dealing with a player under Chuck you are still talking about a real “potential” guy who just needs some coaching.

Guys, I can save y’all a bunch of grief and let you know we’re going to lose. Why am I saying that when we’re one score down at halftime? Because I’m having a rotten day. When I have a rotten day, it’s rotten all the way. My TV’s broken, I hurt my shoulder trying to fix it, I’ve got a headache … if there’s one thing history has shown me, it’s that NC State cannot win in this scenario. Would love for that to happen, but that would make it a good day, and that’s just not in the mix right now. Sorry.

Can we please pick up the blitz and have a decent pass block to give Evans a chance to look for a receiver?

Also, is Maryland in the infamous Cover-2 zone that there is no way to throw against? I only ask because the spectacular camera angles of Lincoln Financial never show more than the LOS.

  9. Micky McCarthy 10/21/2006 at 1:36 PM #

Please trot this line out for a series:

    RT: Julian Williams
    RG: Kalani Heppe
C: Luke Lathan or Meares Green
    LG: Leroy Harris
    LT: Curt Crouch

  10. vtpackfan 10/21/2006 at 1:39 PM #

^ would it be ok Mickey if we trotted them out for just one play, say 3 and 5 after we have just crossed the 50.

  11. Slader4881 10/21/2006 at 1:42 PM #

When was the last time we forced a turnover? I bet chuck or Steve dunlap couldn’t even tell you.

  12. 1.21 Jigawatts 10/21/2006 at 1:46 PM #

That was all Evans fault, from the camera angle behind him it appeared he never looked off his receiver.

  13. drhammondo 10/21/2006 at 1:48 PM #

This is what Chuck gets for playing not to lose against Maryland (as has been his custom since the last drive against them in 2001)!

  14. 1.21 Jigawatts 10/21/2006 at 1:49 PM #

I’d say it looks like we packed it in for the game at halftime, but I don’t think we ever got off the bus. It looks like it’s going to be a long 2nd half.

  15. drhammondo 10/21/2006 at 1:50 PM #

I’m with Section Six on this one…anyone else want a stiff drink?

  16. 1.21 Jigawatts 10/21/2006 at 1:52 PM #

Might as well because something needs to take the edge off of watching this crap unfold.

  17. drhammondo 10/21/2006 at 1:53 PM #

One (unrelated to TOs) question…have our offensive tackles blocked ANYONE today? It seems as if DE has to step up in the pocket as he’s flushed out every time he drops back to pass!

  18. drhammondo 10/21/2006 at 1:55 PM #

Also…over/under on how many touches Andre Brown gets the rest of the afternoon: I’m going with 2.5!

  19. Micky McCarthy 10/21/2006 at 1:56 PM #

Our tackles have yet to lay a hand on a defender all season

  20. drhammondo 10/21/2006 at 1:58 PM #

Oh they’ve laid a hand on several…it’s just that everytime that they do…they grab a jersey and hold on

  21. 1.21 Jigawatts 10/21/2006 at 2:01 PM #

I agree 100% Micky. I’ve noticed it myself all season that the tackles are either to slow or don’t know how to block a DE because I can’t remember them doing their job once.

  22. 1.21 Jigawatts 10/21/2006 at 2:06 PM #

Wow, we actually scored a TD even with the no call hold by #46. Then Deraney kicks it extra point so low it gets blocked.

Is it me or does it seem like Deraney has just done too much for too long it’s now hurting every part of his game?

  23. drhammondo 10/21/2006 at 2:07 PM #

It’s amazing how well an offensive drive can go when we HAVE to have a score–if only the coaches could have that same kind of approach to every drive from the beginning of the game. Then we would be able to exceed that 24 point threshold.

  24. choppack1 10/21/2006 at 2:08 PM #

Oye vey – well, we quickly destroyed any momentum from our last drive.

  25. 1.21 Jigawatts 10/21/2006 at 2:09 PM #

There’s still a chance, they only have 20 on the board.
