Herbstreit Puts Pack on Alert

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit chose NC State for his “Upset Watch” today against Wake Forest.

One key item currently going the Wolfpack’s way is the nature of our injury report. (Link) It doesn’t look like State is dealing with too many key injuries heading into the game.

We are going to take a quick stab in the dark and say the name – Darrell Blackman. Blackman’s injury this season has pushed him off most people’s radar. But, his game-breaking ability and special teams play could be very key into today’s game.

Pack Pride has a comprehensive preview of today’s game. (Link)

I have to say this…As talented as both of these teams are (both have the ability to run the table IMHO); I’m not worried about the matchup between the two teams. I’m worried about the match up of both of these teams against the inept ACC officiating.

Let me preface what I’m about to say by letting you know that I’m hearing impaired and I watch football games with nary an anouncer to call plays for me or spout off with their conventional “wisdoms” concerning the game. Closed Captions take up about a quarter of the telly screen and makes me miss nearly half the action on the field so that’s a no-go. I watch games kinda like a Mystery Science Theater 3000 in my head with games. It makes them more interesting and you learn more about tendencies of teams by making your own observation instead of hearing what the anouncers have to say which tends to plant subconscious thoughts that you just spout off later as your own opinion.

Having said that; watching the VT/BC game the other night was painful. The sheer number of calls that the refs had to revert to Official Review astounded me. I could’ve called a majority of the reviewed plays on the field being blind in one eye and having a glass eye in the other. Forget the PAC-10 officials; these ACC officials take the cake. I remember hearing that 50% of the reviewed plays last year were overturned in the booth. 50%!! That in and of itself shows the shite-filled performances of the refs. The refs may be school teachers or mechanics in their real jobs, but this is a serious business and they should get it right on the field even if it isn’t something they do 5 days of the week. We all know that Hunt is an idiot, but shouldn’t there be repurcussions for screwing up so many times? I’m a fan of instant replay, but it seems like the zebras on the field are making lame calls on the field because they know that no matter what happens they’ve got instant replay to “get it right”. They review plays that are obvious on the field and don’t review plays that they should (see the Akron game for example). The flow and ebb of the game depends on oficiating and it is hard to get into a groove with them screwing up at every possible moment.

Whoever wins today (NCSU); I hope they win because of great football playing rather than inspite of poor officiating. The game is already tough enough playing each other. Niether team can have game-day preperations against the officials. So I beg, as an ACC fan, please refs; get the calls ON THE FIELD right. Stop f*#%&n’ up and let the teams play. You’re not the opponent the other team is.

I’m with you Irish. I get the games here in Honduras only in spanish (when I get them) and I just watch with the sound off. Makes for a fun game. Although I do turn it up when someone scores, because the announcers scream “Si, Señor” at the top of their lungs.

Like him or not, Herbstreit seems to understand this program pretty darn well.
