Getting Nasty Out There for A Coach

We work hard for the analysis and commentary that you find on SFN to be accurate. But, whatever is blogged here will almost always be blogged with uncompromising emotion because we are fans. In case you didn’t notice, the name of the site is StateFANSnation.

In today’s N&O, Chip Alexander highlighted most of the key on-field/execution problems surrounding NC State football this year and penned a nice article that was dead on with many of the observations that you have read here — just without the ‘fan emotion’.

In ‘Slumping Wolfpack seeks solutions’ Alexander goes into detail about:

(1) A SLOW-STARTING OFFENSE
(2) THE RASH OF PENALTIES
(3) THE TURNOVER MARGIN
(4) SHAKY KICKING GAME

Alexander also references a video that has popped up on YouTube highlighting many of the Pack’s problems this year by using the team’s video introduction that is played on the Carter-Finley scoreboard before every game. (Which is odd since we have never been able to find the actual Carter-Finley scoreboard intro on YouTube!)

The video that Alexander is referencing is actually the second video embeded in this entry. We are calling your attention to another video that was done last year in the first video below to highlight the consistency of the broken-record of the problems within NC State football regardless of what year the calendar shows.

The last drive of the first half is a good example of why total pass plays versus total running plays has nothing to do with what we are talking about when we say we are too conservative. It also is a good example of what frustrates me so much. I copied the play-by-play below.

This drive came right after the Stone fiasco. We get the ball on our own twenty, down by seven, with 5:14 left in the half. We come out playing like we should and move the ball down the field. 8 complete passes; 2 incomplete; and one running play later; we have a first down on the Virginia 16 with 2:01 left. Timeout NC State. I’m not going to speculate here on what might have been said during the timeout.

1st down: Brown rushes for -2 yards. 2nd down: Completed pass to Eugene for -2 yards. On 3rd and 14 from the Virginia 20, we complete a 4 yard pass to Dunlap. Deraney comes in and misses a 33 yard field goal.

I didn’t much like the 1st and 2nd down call but the third down call was terrible. Go up the field. Force a pass into coverage if necessary. There’s less than a minute left on the half, an interception wouldn’t hurt that much. It is so frustrating to see a great drive end without taking a shot at the end zone.

Getting back to the numbers: 12 attempts; 10 completions; 2 rushing plays. Our long completions were 14, 15, and 17 yards. Almost sounds wide open until you look at the end play.

On the scoring drive in the fourth quarter we had 9 attemps, 5 completions, 1 sack, and 1 rush for no gain. 21 of our 33 attempts and 15 of our 21 completiions came on these two drives.

We didn’t run many plays on the other drives because we went three and out.

  3. GAWolf 11/01/2006 at 9:53 AM #

I see our pitiful on-field performance is starting to hurt recruiting. Apparently we’re losing interest from kids who have already committed.

This is not unexpected, but frustrating nonetheless. At some point we have to stop the bleeding.

  4. Mr O 11/01/2006 at 9:59 AM #

One last thing, I saw people(not sure if it was here), complain that we called a timeout at the end of the first half because we didn’t score. We also called a timeout on our 2nd to last drive and did score.

Again, I think more often than not it comes to down to execution by our players which our coaches are largely responsible for.

  5. Woof Wolf 11/01/2006 at 10:26 AM #

I don’t have a problem with the timeout. I just didn’t think much of the play selection coming out of the timeout.

If we executed perfectly on every play then any of us could be the OC on game days. Sometime you need to know the plays that have the best chance of succeeding.

  6. Mr O 11/01/2006 at 10:44 AM #

So average fans like us know more about which plays have a better chance of succeeding than men who are highly compensated and have years of experience playing/coaching at various levels of football?

I think that is where you and I can agree to disagree.

  7. Woof Wolf 11/01/2006 at 10:54 AM #

The first sentence of the paragraph starts with an “If.”

Hey, I agree! You know I don’t like silly on field celebrations, especially the ones that came when we were losing, and someone had made a single good play, or we just happen to score. It was like, ‘Look at me, I don’t care about the game, it’s me, I’m bad.’

But hey, bring ’em on now, take the penalty. If they can just get ball into the end zone on occassion, let the players do back flips and dance on down from one end of the field all the way to other end zone.

How much is lost on a 25 yd pass down field that ends in an interception, versus a 40 yd punt with an eight yard return? About seven yards. And for anyone who say that the coaches need to protect young Daniel Evans, I would ask, from what? Themselves? If the kid throws an interception and the coaches go into panic mode, stiffle the offense even further down, or tongue lash him for it, then yeah. That would confirm that the staff is that they don’t have any real confidence in Daniel Evans, and even less in what they are doing themselves. But if he comes off the field and someone says, ‘Just keep throwing the ball, you got it, we’ll get it next series,” then it’s a different story.

The staff is fighting to limit mistakes, but they are working on the wrong ones. What’s hurting the team the most are not the silly mistakes and penalties, it is the reaction to them. The staff is so worried about that aspect, that they shut it further and further down, and never go into the all out attack mode. The players worry, over think, jump early, and so on.

Just let it loose and attempt to get the ball into the end zone, whatever it takes, and do it early!!! Just pull out all the stops, show confidence in the players, and at least attempt to score EARLY!!!

“So average fans like us know more about which plays have a better chance of succeeding than men who are highly compensated and have years of experience playing/coaching at various levels of football?”

People may not know what would work better, but they can certainly identify what didn’t and second-guess it.

  10. SixPack 11/01/2006 at 11:10 AM #

You can talk about “play calling” all you want but ELIMINATING THE PENALTIES would improve our success rate dramatically. How many times in our losses has a long gainer and/ or first down been erased in favor of a punt and excellent field position for the opponent ?!!!!

  11. Woof Wolf 11/01/2006 at 11:13 AM #

I did not intend to imply that any of us could do a better job. But as RWAFS said we sure can tell what isn’t working.

For all the ‘big bucks’ we are spending, I think we need some coaches who would give us a better chance to win.

Why did Amato hire Pat Meyer as offensive line coach, when Pat Meyer had no experience coaching the offensive line. Could the false starts and poor execution on offense be related to an offensive line that looks to be in shambles with no improvement in sight?

  13. Mr O 11/01/2006 at 11:37 AM #

RAWFS: That is true, but there is always the possibility that the right play was called and that the players didn’t execute the play well. That is still a coaching issue, but it isn’t a playcalling or offensive philosophy issue.

  14. cfpack03 11/01/2006 at 11:38 AM #

Seems like a lot of you guys have excellent hindsight, so let’s examine our foresight. What’s the best offensive approach to beat GT?

Clemson pounded away, rushing “straight up” for the majority of the game, to beat GT. I know B&B are fully capable, but with all the complaints about our OL, are we man enough for this?
GT blitzes and blitzes often. Will Evans have enough time for a throw downfield?
Quick swing passes to the flats can be effective against secondary blitzes, but we all hate seeing them called. Any suggestions?

  15. GAWolf 11/01/2006 at 12:26 PM #

Even with Coach Berry our offensive line was terrible. The greatest O-Line coach in the world can’t produce with a squad that has little to no talent. Amato has failed every year to put an emphasis on the O-Line in recruiting in leiu of picking up the flashy back or receiver. The problem we’re seeing now is that without a strong core group we won’t be able to utilize the skill he’s amassed.

Let’s see… we have the best D Coord in the conference going against the worst O Coord in the conference. That spells disaster, unless of course our players motivate themselves to play out of their heads and win.

On paper we should get blown out in this game. But because of the NC State “way” we’ll likely win this one and beat or at least play Clemson tight only to get embarrassed by UNC and ECU. I’m no soothsayer, but I can see it happening…. and have stated that all season long.

Who’s talking about Jeff Bowden here?

^ & ^^ How about the worst HC vs. one of the better HC’s in the ACC.

  19. cfpack03 11/01/2006 at 12:56 PM #

I’m a believe in execution, over play-calling, so that’s more like it 74

  20. Heels Perspective 11/01/2006 at 1:00 PM #

    ^^

Hey 74, You State fans are never giving the Heels credit when credit is due. Sports Illustrated says Carolina has the worst HC!! It’s the only accolade we’re getting this year except 119th out of 119 in turnover ratio! 😉

  21. Woof Wolf 11/01/2006 at 1:28 PM #

At least we are second in both catories.

  22. class of 74 11/01/2006 at 1:45 PM #

^^ yeah and we are 118th so we may surpass you guys in that as well. It is a race to the bottom.

  23. redfred2 11/01/2006 at 2:40 PM #

    “the worst HC!!”

Another former title, ripped away, by the boys in powder blue.

  24. Heels Perspective 11/01/2006 at 4:58 PM #

CTC is in a position to take back the title……….(i.e. Nov. 18th)

  25. Woof Wolf 11/01/2006 at 5:14 PM #

    How well we know.
