Deraney’s Story

A case could have been made last season that John Deraney (punter/kicker) was NC State’s Most Valuable Player through the first half of last season. Today, the N&O shared a great piece on John Deraney today that is definitely worth a quick review. (Link)

John Deraney says his mind wanders often these days. That’s understandable, because the N.C. State senior has much to wonder about other than Florida State coming to town Thursday night.

He thinks about his father, 54-year-old Rick Deraney, who is at home in Fayetteville, Ga., struggling with the debilitating effects of multiple sclerosis.

In August, doctors predicted Rick Deraney had six months to live. Since then, he has received help from hospice workers. Though no longer able to attend State games, he remains an inspiration for his son.

John Deraney etches the word “Dad” on the shadow patches beneath both eyes before trotting onto the field.

Through the years, NC State fans have been touched by a lot of personal stories of interest within our community. In addition to this Deraney story, we’d like to send your attention to this link for a few minutes.

That is another great story!!! that makes it difficult to comment without running the risk of sounding contrite, but true inspiration comes in many forms. His dad is very proud of him I’m sure. That is the best gift a son can give, and all a father ever wants, or needs, from any child.

Best of luck to all of the Deraneys.

My brother is good friends with John. He’s extremely humble, and I know he’s having a hard time because of his dad. It almost makes you tear up when they zoom in on him getting ready to kick, and you see “DAD” written underneath his eyes. I’ve wondered why the TV announcers haven’t commented on his situation, especially considering what a veteran and success he’s been for the Pack. Breaks your heart though.
