Curse Continues – Atsur Hurt (Updated)

Rumors are circulating that NC State’s only experienced guard on the 2006-2007 roster, Engin Atsur, has experienced a foot injury and will not play in tonight’s Red/White game (not that many people can see the game).

Some fans on certain message boards have speculated that Atsur could be out for the entire month of November, but (at this point) we hear that the injury is not that significant and Atsur should be available to practice with the team some prior to the season opener on November 17th. SFN will keep you updated with anything that we learn.

If Atsur were to be hurt for the start of the season, NC State could enter the season with only five true healthy scholarship players comprised of one junior, two sophomores and two freshmen because Trevor Ferguson is ineligible until the end of the first semester and Farnold Degand still waiting a final answer from the NCAA.

If Atsur were to miss time during the season, then we would expect Gavin Grant to move to the back court with Courtney Fells. Since the post positions will be manned by Brandon Costner and Ben McCauley, then the hole ultimately existing at the swing forward position may be filled by true freshman, Dennis Horner. Looks like the young man went from #12 on the projected ‘depth chart’ to #5 in just seven short months.

Interestingly, the two freshmen that spurned their written commitments to NC State University – Dan Werner and Larry Davis – would have easily had the opportunity to potentially start in the ACC as true freshmen this year. Wow. I guess such a challenge and opportunity wasn’t in their DNA.

The news on Werner’s court awareness and BB IQ is also encouraging.

I’m thinking as I always have, add the international experience and determination of a missing Engin Atsur, and this group will give it their all and present some challenges to opposing teams.

W/L record, who knows??? But it will be an entertaining group to watch.

I’m no doctor, but I don’t think you need a soft cast for a sore achilles tendon. Do you?

  3. PackBacker001 10/26/2006 at 10:03 AM #

I take that back. It could be a “heel spur with insertional achilles tendinitis.” Why didn’t I think of that? It sounds like a long recovery…

I don’t know if my doctor knew what he was doing back then, but I wore one for two weeks in HS because of it. I was told if there is suspected damage it was better immobilized. It may just be precautionary thing.

Or is Sidney Lowe sandbagging already???

Your diagnosis is not a good one, hopefully not.

do you think the NCAA will show us some leniancy as we have no PG and allow Farnold to play this year.? It sure would be swell of them. I mean we dont even have enough players to practive 5 on 5 do we? Can SId or, and i hesitate to say this, Fowler petition to the NCAA that we desperately need another body on the court.

can we dress sid? i bet he still has a sweet 15 ft jumper

packback04 – They won’t and shouldn’t let our team’s needs determine their ruling.

  9. Rochester 10/26/2006 at 10:34 AM #

Degand can practice either way, as can Simon Harris, who is also not eligible to play until next year. So the practice squad will be unaffected by the NCAA ruling.

“do you think the NCAA will show us some leniancy…”

Well, our once legally bound “recruits” are able to play unfettered anywhere and elsewhere. Why? I do not know. We’ll see how this Degand thing shakes out. It could be a stroke of genius by none other than Lee Fowler, but I’m thinking just another foolish mistake and another slap in the face.

exactly red^^^ but as we all know nothing ever works out in States favor when it comes to the NCAA or media. How many times did ESPN show the Oregon/Okla replay mess up… if i recall, that was the same weekend we lost to Akron on a blown call that replay would have shown. ANd i didnt hear about NC state getting screwed once on ESPN, but for 3 weeks we had to listen about okla got screwed.

    That was funny, packbacker04 🙂

“I no longer question the media’s last place prediction.”

I went last night, and I agree. On the plus side, Degand is a pretty good PG. He’s better than Justin Gainey, Archie Miller, Cliff Crawford and Tony Bethel.

i know its a long shot, but god it would be nice to have him on the floor this year.

DOes anyone know when he is supposed to hear from the NCAA. regarding his eligibility?

“DOes anyone know when he is supposed to hear from the NCAA. regarding his eligibility?”

I would say, in all likelihood, that that news will be released on the morning of the next team press conference. Just a guess though.

  16. packbackr04 10/26/2006 at 11:54 AM #

are we hopeful that he will be allowed to play, or is what you are hearing that he will more than likely sit out till next yr

  17. packbackr04 10/26/2006 at 11:57 AM #

and as red said^^ we were nice enough to allow contracually bound players to walk, so we should get a little reciprocation, or as Carl from Caddyshak would say as the Dhali LLama himself is about to stiff him… “how about a little somethin’, you know, for the effort”

    packbackr04

That last post of mine was supposed to be funny, kinda like the first presser where the Brackman/C Wright topics stole all the limelight from the kids who were sitting there.

My understanding for the get go was that he wouldn’t be eligible this season. I only heard in the last month or so that there was possibility that he could play.

I would love to know more about the NCAA rules regarding his situation, and Pitt’s involvement in that determination. Also how it, or if, there is any correlation between Degands transfer here, and the situation with the recruits that we willingly let fly without raising a finger.

I keep typing “for” instead of instead of “from.” Why, I continually screw up on that one word, I do not know. Why I keep typing in general, who the hell knows?

red, i thought all of your posts were meant to be funny… kidding

*if i recall, that was the same weekend we lost to Akron on a blown call that replay would have shown. *

The Akron game was on 9/9, the Okla/Ore game was on 9/16. I definitely agree with you, We get the short end of the stick every time. But for all Oklahoma’s bluster, they ended up coming across as a bunch of whiners when they just… would… not…let…it…drop. It also seems a pretty sad state of affairs when your school president goes to such lengths over an officials ruling in a seemingly unimportant football game.

In any case, borne from our mess at least there is a policy in the ACC now to review any game ending play where the outcome is in the balance. And ESPN (Kirk Herbstreit) showed the Akron RBs elbow being down before the goal line at the beginning of the FSU national TV game, questioning why the refs immediately ran towards the tunnel without so much as a thank you and goodbye. We did get some quality exposure with that one.

^9/9…9/16, I was accounting for the holidays.

I was only thinking that it was the same weekend, it was packbackr04 who actually typed it.

    What a dumbass.
