06-07 Top Guards (Updated 5pm)

With basketball approaching before you know it, Gary Parrish ranks his top 20 point guards in America in this column.

The ACC lands three of the top 10 playmakers, but none of the next ten. Obviously Dick Vitale wasn’t doing the list or you could automatically add a Duke player to the list to give the ACC four slots.

4. Sean Singletary (Virginia): Singletary last season became the first Virginia player to be named first-team All-ACC since Bryant Stith in 1992. That’s a long time. That’s impressive. That’s why you shouldn’t be surprised when this classic lead guard who can score at a high rate — he averaged 17.7 points per game as a sophomore and put 35 on Gonzaga — has the Cavaliers back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2001.

6. Tywon Lawson (North Carolina): Every time you put a freshman on a list like this, people are bound to send e-mails featuring the phrase “but the kid hasn’t even played a game yet.” Please, save the e-mail. Lawson has played lots of games, thousands of games. That he hasn’t yet done so at the college level is inconsequential, and you’ll see that once he’s running Roy Williams’ Tar Heels up and down the court in 30-point victories.

8. Jamon Gordon (Virginia Tech): Gordon is really a combo guard, but one who is good enough with the ball to play the point, evidence being that his assist-to-turnover ratio was better than 2-to-1 last season. If he’s too high on this list, so be it. I’ve always been a sucker for point guards hard enough to average 6.0 rebounds per game.

Additionally, CBS has listed their top 20 shooting guards in the country (Link). “Interestingly”, UNC’s Wayne Ellington – who has never played a second of college basketball – is the 7th best shooting guard in the country. Wow!

7. Wayne Ellington (North Carolina): I’m not sure Ellington is the next Michael Jordan, but he can certainly be the next Rashad McCants. The 6-4 talent just might challenge Tyler Hansbrough for the team’s scoring title, and do so within the flow of the Tar Heels’ offense. With so much depth, North Carolina should play even faster — and score more — than normal. Among others, Ellington will benefit, and he could be the ACC’s Freshman of the Year.

12. J.R. Reynolds (Virginia) 6-3 Sr. 17.0 3.1 Along with Sean Singletary, gives Virginia one of the best backcourts in the nation

15. Gerald Henderson (Duke) 6-5 Fr. NA NA He won’t shoot it as well as Redick, but he’ll dunk a lot better.

18. Anthony Morrow (Georgia Tech) 6-5 Jr. 16.0 4.5 Back injury could sideline him until late November.

There laying a verbal thrashing on us. Kinda like the thrashing coming out of Memphis a few months back when that plane was on the way to RDU!

*I like the way youre thinking SG^^ but it should be the other way.
valvano center and case court….. but NC State officials will never let anything on campus be named after V.. which is a shame*

But the Valvano Center/Case Court isn’t on campus 😉

    it’s quiet,…too quiet

    ???

  5. primacyone 10/06/2006 at 3:55 PM #

Red – Wasn’t that the same thing you said a few months ago when that plane was on the way from Memphis?

We could open up a Lee Fowler conversation if you wanted to get it a little louder in here.

On second thought. Since it is Friday, lets’ not do that.

The quiet is good. Everyone is happy right now. Lets enjoy the moment.

After all, Herb never provided moments like this!!!!!!!!!!!

Just for the record. Thank goodness that plane went back to Memphis and we ended up with Lowe and company.

According to ESPN, we might find out about Brackman by next week also:

I see Lowe at CF wearing warm ups and being a regular guy — very approachable, too. Not at all looking all slick, smooth and unapproachable like some of our neighbors. Chuck’s very unslick way seems to go over with the modern athlete. Let’s hope that Sidney’s way can make a difference, too.

I saw Sid on the Jumbotron last night, so professional and yet so real. You just gotta love the guy. Seems the recruits are feeling the same way. We got the tradition. We got the facilites. We got the man. Go State!

Tim Brackman?…Andrew Stoddard?…I know they both played baseball and basketball for AT LEAST 3 years, and helped to win a some kind of Wolfpack National championship, but damnit those two always run together in my mind?

  10. redfred2 10/06/2006 at 6:45 PM #

Wait a minute. Didn’t one of those guys win a national championship as a junior in one sport, and then decide to stick around for his senior year and win one another in the other sport? Later to become known as one of the all-time greats in NCSU and history. Yeah, I remember now.

^Sorry, it’s Friday, and I’m a beer ahead of everyone.

May next Friday be an epiphany. I’m scared about this link I got off Georgetown’s board:
    http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/news?slug=rivals-60479&prov=rivals&type=story_recruiting

The GT poster, who mentioned their lone signee at this point, had a point. It seems odd this kid would mention NOW that GT has no scholarships. But, I’m hopeful Wright will be the first domino.

Not good, not good at all. Keepin em crossed though. Life is not that unfair, something has good has just got to happen soon around here. Bball-wise that is.

  14. redfred2 10/06/2006 at 10:23 PM #

I went back and checked out the Gtown boards myself. It looked like just a bunch morons shooting in the dark with no hard facts to base anything on. Something basically identical to my posts here on SFN.

Good point Craptacular^^^ I still like Case Court and Valvano Center. But i like Where Shooitinguard and you are headed… it would be nice to name those things…

  16. packbackr04 10/09/2006 at 10:05 AM #

anythign new on Wright? what time is his presser tomorrow?

  17. primacyone 10/09/2006 at 10:26 AM #

    3:30 PM EDT

  18. packbackr04 10/09/2006 at 11:20 AM #

Is that tomorrows scheduled presser from Wright???

redfred^^ lets be nice. i was just doing a little poking around over at HOyasaxas.. or something like that and they seem to be a classy site, much like SFN… from what i saw anyway… they are troubled by Wrights apparent decision but are not taking jabs at us, in fact they appear to understand why wright wouldnt want to go and battle for PT at hilltop when he could come in here and start from day 1….. in fact one poster had this to say about us..

“After the class that the wolf pack fans have shown on our board and to their old coaching staff I am sure that recruits will be lining up for them for some time.”
unless he was being totally sarcastic, sounds like a good site

  19. packbackr04 10/09/2006 at 12:33 PM #

SFN… do you have any info on Wright that would be worthy of noting?

  20. ShootingGuard 10/09/2006 at 2:41 PM #

    packbackr04,

Say your prayers and sleep tight tonight…all will be revealed shortly after 3:30 tomorrow…

  21. ShootingGuard 10/09/2006 at 3:01 PM #

Anthony Randolph committing to LSU helps with Tracy Smith…as would a commitment from Chris Wright…

  22. packbackr04 10/09/2006 at 3:49 PM #

GO PACK!!!!!!!! thanks shooting^ i needed that, almost as much as i need a shot of scotch. I feel like a kid at christmas who peeked in his parents closet and already knows what hes getting, but he is still just as excited.

As a follow up to Smith, do we want to give another scholly in the 07 class??? I mean is Smith that good? I think if we get Wright, and he talks Hickson into coming… do we really need Smith? Ami being naive, i know we needs big bodies, but if SId is the recruiting beast we all hope he turns out to be, and he gets the ball rolling tomorrow. We could be set up for a HUGE 08 class… Wrong?right?or am i just way to excited to be coherent right now?

  23. redfred2 10/09/2006 at 3:55 PM #

    packbackr04

All I said was that they were harmless, morons, just like myself.

On second thought, that is pretty low. Sorry over there at G’town.

Seriously though, I got the feeling they were just as afraid to say anything one way or the other. Afraid that any speculation one way or the other would somehow jinx their chances and they were erring on the less optimistic side of the spectrum. I feel exactly the same way.

  24. packbackr04 10/09/2006 at 4:43 PM #

I am with you 100% and i would have to say i am in the harmless moron that likes to drink and spout off about our team boat with you….

didnt mean to get on you or anything, it just appeared they were taking the high road (as far as i could tell) and i didnt want to start anything… cause i know they are watching our boards through this as well. (I saw a few of them had posted they were watching what we were saying about the Wright situation). But as SG said above^^ all will be revealed tomorrow at 3:30 and fred my friend, you and i may have to have a toast at said time!

  25. redfred2 10/09/2006 at 5:31 PM #

No harm, I know what you’re saying about the G’town boards, there was some good stuff there. I didn’t like the one about N Sloan and Jimmy V, but people believe everything they hear and read at first glance. I don’t expect a Georgetown Hoya fan to dig any deeper than the headlines regarding NCSU.

As far as 3:30pm tomorrow, I’m gonna have something iced down for later on, one way or the other. I’m seriously thinking that I will either be totally estatic, or just mildly disappointed. I see it as an absolute positive if it happens now, but nothing to be really upset about if it doesn’t. This could be a lift off on the Space Shuttle, or just another bump in the road.

I don’t know exactly how I’ll feel, but this little link to cyber space and laptop computer may go flying either way. Keepin the fingers crossed and waiting impatiently right along with you.
