The “Fire Bunting” Movement Grows

Scroll down the front page of SFN and you will see a couple of entries where we focused a little on John Bunting yesterday.

Today we see that the movement has grown as there is now a website dedicated to the cause: www.firebunting.com

“Coaches that have been suggested to us for replacing John Bunting …
Greg Schiano (Rutgers), Jeff Fisher (Tennessee Titans), Paul Johnson (Navy), Jimmy Johnson, Lou Holtz, Terry Bowden, Ken Whisenhunt (Pittsburgh Steelers, offensive coordinator)”

At least State fans aren’t the only ones who get to be called delusional….

    Jeff Fisher?
    Jimmy Johnson!!?!?!
    Lou Holtz?!?!?!!
    Terry Bowden!?!?!?!!!
    Ken Whisenhunt?!?!?!!

    Wow…. Just wow….

  2. redfred2 09/27/2006 at 12:25 PM #

I wouldn’t particularly jump on that as delusional. Some schools actually want to win and can see the overall importance of it. Those same universities also have the ability and aren’t afraid to put the right things into place to make it happen.

    We’ll see.

Sounds more liek message board mania. Terry Bowden would not be held in much regard after his antics at Auburn. Holtz — geez — can’t a man retire and make tons of money on TV? Jimmy Johnson — why take a cut in pay?

  4. RAWFS 09/27/2006 at 12:32 PM #

I doubt UNC will make a huge national hire. Coaches of that caliber usually want to be “The Man” and “The Man” at UNC is named Roy.

  5. RAWFS 09/27/2006 at 12:34 PM #

    Bo,

Holts has some merit, if you ask me. He’s old so he won’t be there forever. He’s left nearly every place he’s coached on probation, and seeing the holier than thous in the Carolina crowd have to stomach NCAA sanctions would worth paying to see. Finally, there would be Dad versus Son, Holtz style and maybe we could squirm out of playing ECU as mandated by the football schedulers in the NC legislature. So there is a bit of upside to Lou coming to Chapel Hill.

There are 5 million reasons Bunting is there for another year or two.

  7. Phil Ford 09/27/2006 at 12:50 PM #

Burp! you wolfpack fans don’t know nothing if we fire Bunting we bringing in a name bigger than Roy! Our top five interviews already lined up, Bill Belichick, Lou Holtz, Jimmy Johnson, Bill Parcels, and Pete Carroll. All say there is no finer place to coach or live than Chapel Hill. Winning a Super Bowl or national championship is nothing compared to doing it at UNC. Even Bill Cowher asked about the job and we told him no thanks we got better canidates. Burp! and I will remember this tomorrow, too! Burp!

Burp! and I don’t want to hear nothing bad about my man Dick Baddour. Burp! he hired Roy!! and he got my resume sitting on his desk just waiting for me to graduate from AA for the tenth time! Burp!

  9. Lawerence Taylor 09/27/2006 at 1:02 PM #

(Snort) Yo man Phil, you drunk as usual. You know the Myrtle Beach Police let me go and Baddour promised me the job if Bunting don’t work out. I get them boys busting some ass! I got the juice to fire them up and know where to get in Chapel Hill too!!! (Snort) LT next Tar heel Coach. Parcels even recomended me. He owes me! LT

  10. RAWFS 09/27/2006 at 1:03 PM #

    Hey Phil,

Is it true that Bill Belichick, Lou Holtz, Jimmy Johnson, Bill Parcels, and Pete Carroll are all building houses in the Governor’s Club?

Are they on the same cul-de-sac as Steve Spurrier’s lavish spread?

I heard that Spurrier wouldn’t come to UNC because the greenskeepers at the GC burned up their greens a few years back. He said that if he can’t play golf 9-5 M-F, and take care of UNC football at lunch he was going to go to the other Carolina.

  11. Rasheed Weed Wallace 09/27/2006 at 1:07 PM #

Yo, LT, been looking you man. Never got that package you was sending. need it bad man. Oh yea some guys came by asking some questions about you man, think they was narcs. Told em nothing man don’t worry, they seemed gay so I sent them to see Stackhouse. send the stuff man! Sheed!

^Suggest you interview Knute Rockne and Vince Lombardi while your at it.

  13. DixieBoy 09/27/2006 at 1:14 PM #

No way in HELL Lou Holtz would ever coach at UNC. While at his book signing at Quail Ridge Books & Music he refered to Chapel Hill as Chapel “Hole”. Plus he has always had a bad opinion of the boys in powder bule ever sine his coaching days at William & Mary when his team got screwed out of a game changing call there. Not happening!
As for Spurrier. From my understanding he had his agent call UNC during the end of the ’04 season to express his interest in the job. At the end of that season though the athletic dept. at UNC told him politely that they would be sticking with bunting because he won out his final two games against dook and wake (to secure them at least a .500 recored) if im not mistaken.

  14. RAWFS 09/27/2006 at 1:14 PM #

They’re going to go after John Heisman. No sense in messing around.

  15. Phil Ford 09/27/2006 at 1:16 PM #

(Burp) hey RAWFS, don’t give me no crap man. you just pissed cause I turned down ya’lls head coaching job. Oh well. Just wait and see. We just had John Madden call and express interest in the job. We going to put him in Gov’s Club and buy him the official wine and cheese bus. Madden said only job in America he would take is at UNC. We going to have our on video game and everything. E A Sports already named it Madden’s Heels 07! (Burp) And LT I promise I’m off the wagon, really! Not just saying that to get a job! (Burp)! Phil Ford

Hey Phil, are you burping because you just ate Kenny Smith?

  17. Dick Baddour 09/27/2006 at 1:45 PM #

Dick Baddour here. I am tired of you internet mongruls. The finest instituion in America at Chapel Hill nevers fires a coach based on wins and loses. Much like a change we made a few years ago in the basketball area. We look at the direction of the young men in a program and look to make sure they are getting the full benefit of the greatest experience a young man could have and that is to represent the University of Chapel Hill. I can assure you that if I and the unversity felt a change of direction is needed, plenty of well experienced coaches would gladly be honored to work for our great university. Why Mack Brown calls me almost daily and says worst thing he ever did was leave the employment of our fine unviersity and would want to be the first one granted an interview. he realizes now he could win championships every year at UNC. Not only just one like he has now. Why even coaches such as Mike O cain tell me the most enjoyable experience of his life was his brief tenure by our most prestigious university. So don’t believe what you hear, I am here to put an end to the rumors. but one thing you can alwasy count on. Our university will always be above you and all other schools. We look down our noses at the uneducated as yourself with pride!!
PS. Phil, your test came back negative.

Terry Bowden’s name has come up in a few national stories I’ve read lately. Every time with ACC schools in the same sentence. Even us. And with Chapel Hill and UVa.

I dont think Terry is all that much of a long shot.

Jimmy Johnson and Lou “No Culture” Holtz is just hilarious.

I dont really care as long as its not Shane Montgomery.

  19. packbackr04 09/27/2006 at 1:56 PM #

what does terry bowdens resume look like?

  20. Big Daddy Wolf 09/27/2006 at 1:57 PM #

Wow, i am hearing all kinds of stuff on this UNC coaching thing. Mack Brown wants to come back? John Madden and Lou Holtz talking about the job. Wow. UNC must really be looking hard and throwing some dollar signs out there. Friend out of Ohio said the guy at Ohio State wants the job. Did Urban Myer go to Carolina?? Frank Beamer still regrets turning it down I hear. Wow, they really lining up for the UNC job. Madden, now that’s really something.

  21. Big Daddy Wolf 09/27/2006 at 2:15 PM #

Terry Bowden had a good record at Auburn. Even went undefeated one year but no bowl because of NCAA restrictions placed on the program from things that happened before Bowden got there. Bascially Bowden did too good of job and in like third season they were losing ( lack of being to recruit was eventually going to hurt them). He could not deal with administrators and boosters who were working behind his back and he quit in the middle of the season. He has never coached since. He didn’t like the PR crap and unrealistic expectations of big time boosters. He enjoys TV and doubt he really wants to coach again, but might do so for the money. You don’t hear much about it but there is a Bowden family member that did some shady stuff and lost a lot of Terry Bowden and Bobby Bowden’s money from what I understand a couple of years ago. So he may want to jump in on the big pay check again, why I think he has thought about other jobs past couple of years. Terry won big time on a big level. Undefeated and in the SEC ain’t nothing to sneeze at! Terry can coach and knows what coaching is all about. I thought he did better than Tommy. The first Bowden Bowl was suppose to be Terry and Bobby but Terry quit so FSU and Auburn cancelled the games.

I love this post, from the supposed flagship of liberal arts, the crown jewel of the university system:

“I think the Heels should hire someone like Jimmy Johnson. Give the program a little flare. ”

Or, you could just pay a midget to shoot starshells over Kenan. That would give your program a “little flare,” too, you moron.

And that’s a minor point beside the stupidity of thinking Jimmy Johnson would agree to coach … UNC.

Holts has some merit, if you ask me. He’s old so he won’t be there forever. He’s left nearly every place he’s coached on probation.

This sounds like something a Sendekian would say. Ignore the fact that he turned around just about every program he was at.

    Quote:
“Terry Bowden’s name has come up in a few national stories I’ve read lately.”

Probably similar to the situation with Brady at LSU during the basketball coaching search, where he let some people know that he was interested in changing jobs if the money was right. It’s not that people are interested in Terry Bowden, it’s that Terry is shopping around for a job.

  25. Heels Perspective 09/27/2006 at 3:06 PM #

I’m enjoying all the internet chatter this week about Bunting. Last week it was Amato, but a Jimmy V type miracle has righted the ship in Raleigh, yea right. Your guy needs to beat Bunting before you can beat your chests over there in urine stained Carter Fantasy Stadium.

The names here are ridiculous as coaches at UNC.

This fictituous scenario reminds of a “real” life situation last fall where a 2nd rate basketball program thought Rick Barnes, Steve Lavin and Mike Montgomery were coming to coach.
