Poor Decisions Killing the Pack

“Poor decisions Killing the Pack”

Does that sound familiar?

Sure it sounds familiar to NC State football fans who have followed the Wolfpack in the 6+ years of the Chuck Amato era. Excessive penalties and turnovers indicated an extreme lack of discipline that helped wrecked the Wolpack’s most recent two football seasons. Even the Philip Rivers years saw the program consistently mismanage the clock, spend timeouts like a sailor in a whorehouse, and get out coached with game-strategy at most turns.

So, is it any real surprise that poor decisions continue to haunt the program today?

As an example from Saturday night – late in the 3rd quarter at Southen Miss, NC State was down 23-10 and had the ball with a 1st down and goal from the Southern Miss six yard line.

Despite having Andre Brown and Toney Baker in the back field, Offensive Coordinator Marc Trestman inexplicably decided to put Marcus Stone in a position where Stone would exercise judgement and need to make key decisions on the field.

Why?

Seriously…WHY!?

On the play, Stone scrambled away from pressure to his left and had a lane to pick up some yards and possibly score a touchdown. Instead, one of the most inaccurate passers in college football chose to throw completely against the momentum of his body and into the middle of the field to a spot where not a single NC State receiver stood. A USM defensive back intercepted the pass. USM then drove the field to make the score 30-10 instead of a potential 23-17.

It didn’t end there. On the Pack’s defensive series that followed, State’s Tank Tyler was ejected from the game for unsportsman-like conduct in one of a series of inexusable and embarassing penalties committed by the Wolfpack. In fact, after just three quarters of play NC State had committed 8 penalties for over 100 yards – at least 3 of those penalties had been late-hits or unsportsmanlike calls.

Most State fans don’t mind losing when our boys are obviously working their ass off and giving 100% effort on and off the field. As long as everyone does their best and conducts themselves like men should then asking for much more is a debatable stretch. But losing like State is doing tonight – with little visible effort on the field and with MORE thug-like unsportsmanlike penalties like we have seen the last few years is unacceptable. Period.

It all starts at the top – and I don’t mean CTC; I MEAN FOULUP. He’s the one who evaluates, hires and fires coaches!! And he has done a totally incompetent job.

This is about as low as it gets. Probably just as bad the Torbush/MOC “hug bowl.”

TWO illegal substitution penalties in one game.

One of them on a key 3rd down and 10 play to make it 3rd and 15.

Same old stuff we are getting use to seeing. Looks like a long year and a lose to Carolina is the nail that seals the coffin for CTC. It will be interesting at least.

WELL, SHIT! What happened to that hard-nosed defense??? Looked more like Millbrook HS (350 yds to Apex) against S. Miss.
At least Evans showed he can throw the ball, but I think it’s time to consider losing the west coast offense playbook and stealing one from Norm Chow. I seems obvious to me that everyone we’ve played so far is more than ready and able to stop this crap run and bubble screen offense. When you don’t even have a play that can help in 3rd and long situations (which EVERY team in the ncaa will face) something needs to change. I don’t think it’s Amato that should be in the hot seat, it should be Trestman. Amato has shown in the past that he CAN run a good team, but since Trestman has been here, our offense has been nominal at best. Another thing that is obviously lacking is the big D……DISCIPLINE!!! I mean, come on, 15 yds for jawing to an official???? EJECTIONS??? What is this? If we can’t compete with the MAC or C-USA how thw hell can we expect to win in conference? GOD HELP US ALL!!

I was so happy when we got rid of Mazzone, but I swear I believe I’d rather have him than Trestman. This guy cannot coach or call plays. Mazzone couldn’t ever get us in the endzone, but at least he got us to the endzone.

The West Coast Offense sucks – plain and simple.

Amato’s comments this past week pissed me off more than the loss to Akron. It’s time for him to go. Losses I can take – Lord knows I’m used to it. Amato has just become a lightning rod and an embarassment for the program.

    When does basketball start again??

  8. WolfPup35 09/16/2006 at 10:26 PM #

Well, the good news seems to be that UNC gave up 30+ points to FURMAN….maybe we do have a shot at beating them this year.

    from CarFin98 on packpride:

The SMU announcers said that Tyler (they told this after he was thrown from the game) refused to shake hands with the SMU captains at the coin toss. I don’t know if anything specifically lead to this childish behavior on Tank’s part, but either way, what a show of sportsmanship BEFORE the game even begins – not shaking the other guys’ hand? Grow Up Tank et all!

On top of all the usual discipline problems…it’s clear our talent level has significantly regressed from a few years ago.

We aren’t rebuilding – we are doing the opposite of that. Lots of talent left and there wasn’t much in the pipeline to replace it.

  11. Sippit 09/16/2006 at 10:51 PM #

The smartest thing Amato can do now is put Justin Burke in and develop him as the QB of the future. Otherwise we’re well into another loonnng season.

  12. metrowolf 09/16/2006 at 10:57 PM #

I’d like to ask the assembled two serious questions.

    1) How soon (which game) will we see significant playing time from another QB?
    2) What is your current prediction for this year’s record?

My bid tonight is 4-8. I think it’s quite possible, given the way the coaching staff is directing and the team is executing, that we will face our worst ACC season ever. The only possibility is between the Wake, Carolina and Virginia games. By pure dumb luck we’ll pull an upset in one of those games. Every other game is destined for the toilet. BC, FSU, MD, GT, Clemson. If any of you think we’ll win one of those, there’s too much Rum in your post game punch.

  13. GAWolf 09/16/2006 at 11:01 PM #

Can we get the kid from Collegiate to Raleigh before next Saturday? If Trestman thinks he’s better off with Stone over Burke, I think we’re in for YEARS of nights like tonight. The boy from Richmond lit it up last night.

  14. beowolf 09/16/2006 at 11:09 PM #

Obviously, the solution is not the next QB. Sorry, but that’s a pipe dream just like Herb’s next recruiting class.

When you have systemic penalties, turnovers, and poor decision making — and you have a coach chasing officials and dissing opponent’s academics, you have a PROGRAM OUT OF CONTROL.

It’s not pretty. There is no discipline to be found on this team. Not from the players, not from the coaches, nowhere.

  15. packgrad2000 09/16/2006 at 11:20 PM #

4-8 looks pretty optimistic at this point. After losing to Akron and SMU, there’s not one game on our schedule that I can look at and say, “there’s one we should win.” Probably ECU, and even UNC is going to be tough. At this point it’s going to be an upset for us to beat any other team left on the schedule.
My guess is we finish anywhere between 2-4 wins, so I’ll pick the middle and say we finish 3-9.
This football program is spiraling out of control FAST. And we can’t even say, “Just wait till basketball season” like Duke or UNC.

  16. Mike 09/16/2006 at 11:21 PM #

All I have to say is Trestman is terrible. I said that when we hired him. i said that last year. I said it after the ASU game. I said it and many criticized me. I stand behind what I said. I was a big Browns fan when he was in Cleveland and got run out of town. Someone responded by saying he took them to the AFC championship. With an underachieving team, took them inspite of his ineptitude. There is no reason our offense should be this bad. Way too predictable. Put 10 in the box, we cant throw. Even the passes completed were dump offs. Put 10 the box, and they can still cover dump passes and stop them too since the pass goes to the line and no further. Bring back Mazzone? No. But bring in someone who can design an offense most can understand. Trestman is a smart guy, but the offense is too complicated and hindering both Davis (last year) and Stone.

Does the term “lack of institutional control” ring a bell again???

  18. Micky McCarthy 09/17/2006 at 12:03 AM #

GoPack.com has a leading headline of “Wolfpack upset by Southern Miss.”

Calling that an upset is a bit presumptious, eh?

  19. Cardiff Giant 09/17/2006 at 12:14 AM #

^ Unbelievable. Simply beyond comprehension. I wouldn’t have OKd, “Wolfpack Upset By Ravenscroft School” at this point.

As I said, gentlemen, we have been sorely duped, and that is a fact. Chuck Amato is a fraud.

  20. WestCoast 09/17/2006 at 12:33 AM #

Chuck should be gone for sure. 4-8 is a stretch, but I don’t thnk Fowler has the “yow know” to do what he has do to. Somewhere Mike O’Cain is laughing his ass off. At this point even Carolina would out score us.

  21. Andy 09/17/2006 at 12:33 AM #

For the record state was a 3 point underdog in vegas

  22. dawgitall 09/17/2006 at 12:55 AM #

Get a new coach and get Rodney Cox signed, so we will have a QB and a fresh start next year.

I wonder what you could get for an LTR on eBay right now? Next Saturday night with BC should really be prime if we play like the past two weeks. LF better get his pen and paper ready, I feel a letter to the fans is about to hit the media.
