Paper: Little love lost for Chuck Amato

An interesting article in the Charleston newspaper this morning:

CLEMSON – Normally, cheering in press boxes is strictly forbidden.

Apparently there’s an exception when North Carolina State loses to Akron.

When the Zips’ 20-17 victory over the Wolfpack was complete Saturday, a few scribes covering Clemson’s game at Boston College expressed their joy with whoops, claps and high-fives.

Just a hunch, but we’re betting this departure from decorum was perpetrated in a few other ACC press boxes as well. While the behavior was unprofessional and ultimately unacceptable, it was also telling because it highlighted a truth that has become undeniable:

People just don’t like Chuck Amato.

So much for the old comraderie of pulling for your ACC bretheren.

“let’s have this conversation if we only win a handful of games this year.”

Chop, CA was as unproven at being a head coach on the DI level as Sidney Lowe is in basketball. He was hired to win games sure, but he wasn’t hired because he already had.

He was interviewed. They know exactly who Chuck Amato is. Always have.

Given just how weak South Carolina newspapers and tv news are, especially in columbia, charleston and greenville, this is not surprising.

    red-

Sidney Lowe has been a head coach which is much different than someone with no experience leading a program.

Also, I would think that the complexities of heading up a football program takes a far more broad range of skills than basketball. Not to take anything away from basketball or the what is required to be a head coach but bball is much more like running big family as opposed to a big business. Both are complicated but very different.

Right, I left out the word “college” in that sentence. My bad.

Also agree with your assessment of the two jobs. A lot more heads to count and many more relationships to build. Also a lot less control over the individuals.

  5. gowpack 09/14/2006 at 5:28 PM #

Wasn’t the game at BC? Yet the paper says “Clemson” on the tag line. was this guy even at the game?

  6. Texpack 09/14/2006 at 6:38 PM #

Is there any wonder Amato’s teams don’t maintain their composure during games? How undisciplined can you be? Chuck needs to grow up when it comes to dealing with the press. He is in charge of a mediocre (at best) football program that he has been working on for seven years. The fact that “Journalists” cheered merely emphasizes how badly Amato has alienated them. They probably also knew that they could bait him into some kind of childish reaction like the one they got at the press conference.

Almost every job in the world involves a certain amount of doing things a certain way, even if you don’t like it. As you become more successful and prove yourself, you can sometimes earn the right to do more things your own way without having to answer for it. Has Chuck Amato earned that right with the performance of his teams on the field? Hardly. The more time passes, the more it looks like the success we had on the field during the Phillip Rivers era was achieved in spite of Amato, not because of him. The kind of denial represented by Amato’s remarks on the non-qualifiers lets you know all you need to know about how capable he is of righting the ship.

We would be well served to finish the year with an interim Head Coach. I fear it will take 2-3 years to cut the cord instead.

Like the old saying goes; “It’s better to keep your mouth closed and be thought of as a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt”. It seems that half of the things that Chuck says are erroneous and/or incomprehensible. We really need to get him out of here before he permanently tarnishes State’s image and reputation. His continuous foot in mouth P.R. blunders coupled with the evergrowing loss factor has to be detrimental to future recruiting. I can handle a loss, but I’d prefer to lose with a little dignity. In a perfect world Chuck would admit that he is not leading State in the direction in which they deserve to be going, and out of love for his alma mater would step-down. Maybe we could keep him in a defensive capacity where he has a proven track record. But that’s just wishful thinking and will never happen as long as the money is flowing in and the facilities are growing regardless of the state of our rapidly declining football program. But beware Jim, Lee, and Chuck, the hype is quickly burning out, and with that soon too will be the generosity of Wolfpack donors. I can tell you firsthand that morale in section 22 at Carter-Finley is the lowest it has been in quite some time.

Maybe they were clapping because they had just won a bet. Remember, whatsamadoodle said this game was the upset of the season.

  9. Packaholic1 09/14/2006 at 8:02 PM #

Morale was not high in Tallahassee after Bobby’s 6th year either, but they stuck with it and happiness reigns. Let’s give it a try.

I have been embarrassed three times this week.
    1. When I read about Chuck showing his ass in the PC.
    2. When I read how he was baited into making those remarks and I had been on the “That’s it for Chuck” bandwagon.
    3. When I realized I had believed the press.

Screw ’em (the media). I wouldn’t call for Chuck’s resignation now for anything. I am standing behind him all the way. He just got a “Get Out of Jail Free” card on this one from me.

Laughing in the press box? Baiting him? Screw ’em. If I were LF or Chuck, I’d have Annabelle Vaughn researching the assholes who wrote of this like Chuck had lead off whining and excuse making, I and would bar every damn one of them from the PRESS BOX. They could all get their stories from The WSJournal.

This is just more “Cow College,” “Moo U.” “A Pack’s #1 bumper sticker on every pick-up truck and tractor between Raleigh and Greensboro,” “How did I know you graduated from NCState? I saw your class ring when you were picking your nose,” or “Why does NCSU have natural turf at C-F? So their homecoming queen would have some where to graze” looking down their noses thinking they are better than we are BS. Err.. take back the “Homecoming Queen” remark. That one was right-on back when I went to State.

Going to e-mail LF. What in the hell IS he or anyone doing about this situation?

My back is up. Let’s hope every mother’s son who wears the red and white on Saturday is pissed off and on it. SMU declares they are ready for State. Well, bring it on!!

Honestly, I wouldn’t want to have to play the Pack this Saturday. We are going to be either very good or very flat. I don’t think they are going to like their HC being “had” by Chip Alexander or the press laughing at them. Sounds like bulletin board material to me.

Lastly, I revoke or take back everything I have written about this matter before this post,

“Rip ’em up! Tear ’em up! Give ’em hell, State!”

  11. Wolfpack4ever 09/14/2006 at 8:59 PM #

    old13 Says:

“Foulup has done exactly the same thing re: PR, only in far different ways! As he is still at NCSU, do you honestly think there will be any actions taken with CTC!”

What actions do you have in mind? I’d put may arm around his shoulder and say something like, “Damn Chuck, you let the assholes suck you right in. What do you want me to do? Just tell me what you need and I’ll do it.”

You see 13, I’ve fucked up a time or 2 myself — wanted to disappear in the carpet and crawl out of the room undetected. Usually when people deserve support the least is when they need it the most. And Chuck needs support from his boss very much, right now.

So 13, other than fire Chuck and run him out on a rail, what did you have in mind?

  12. Wolfpack4ever 09/14/2006 at 9:23 PM #

    Texpack Says:
Is there any wonder Amato’s teams don’t maintain their composure during games?

You mean like the 3 penalties in the season opener?

    And

    jbhill77 Says:
“morale in section 22 at Carter-Finley is the lowest it has been in quite some time.”

Oh my God! Now this really is a shame. And all this time I was worried about the student-athletes and how this might effect them.

I sat in Section 21, Row K, seats 1-4 for many years before the new donation rules moved me out. I could hardly keep up with what the morale was in the immediate area around me. I guess we were too busy cheering the team on. I’ll admit the morale was pretty low when that dude from Carolina [That’s the “real” “Carolina” for any of you tarholes who might be reading this.] As I was saying before the clarification, that dude from Carolina stupidly fielded a punt running towards his own goal line and returned it about 97 yards for a TD. Now THAT’S demoralizing. Buck up, JB, as Richard Prior said to Eddie Murphy when Eddie’s morale was low after Bill Cosby complained about Murphy’s language. Have a Coke and a smile and shut the f__k up.

I had to speed read all of the posts above, but it seems that a lot of us had fallen prey to very thing that I hate most, that is believing what you read and hear from first reports and intial the shock value that the dreaded media A-holes proliferate and thrive on.

I’m guilty. I didn’t bash CA, but I did lose perspective and I should have known better. I’m not ancient, but I’m old enough, and have seen it enough, to know that what sales best, is plain ol’ dirt. The more it shakes up and bothers the parties involved, the more they keep right on diggin it up.

Like I said before, Chuck Amato is ours. He is NC State’s Head Football coach. Treat him like it.

I’d love nothing more than to hear that there is a traveling contingent of NC State fans in the stands this weekend who give Coach Chuck Amato a huge standing ovation when he hits the field and when his name is announced over the PA system. The press and the rest of the country need to know that we are not splineless morons turn on our own people at the drop of a hat, and like they want everyone to believe. We need to make a showing that says we aren’t going to be easily manipulated by every piece of press or media mud slinging around anymore.

Let’s stop acting as the media portrays us. We have a football coach who has made some great strides in areas. Also one who I know would never say it, but could really use a little love from his alma mater right about now.

    GO PACK!!!

    RIGHT ON, RED!

Section Six put some great stuff up recently. In particular, 2 MORE articles blasting Amato. This media shit is getting ridiculous.

YaHOOO! Were starting to get it. Just one more thing. Never, never never forget, you don’t have to really be a Wolfpack fan to post on this blog. I fear we have moles among us. Gather the facts, analyze them, confirm them, then make up your own mind.

  18. Wolfpack4ever 09/15/2006 at 8:53 AM #

    ^Right on, Red. .. I mean for2n8son.

    Micky McCarthy Says:

“The benchmark for me is 6 wins this year. If he doesn’t get there, hell, get the guy from Akron.”

The guy from Akron knows that Chuck was a gracious loser and for 3 days said all the things we would want said. He likely knows the yellow journalists who cover NCSU finally got to Chuck. What make you think he or any football coach in his right mind would want to come here and be subjected to that shit?

NCSU is not the only Div 1 football program in need of a good, or better or perceived to be better, coach. The press is pro Carolina, many having graduated from the School of Journalism at UNC. I’ve been seen it here for as long as I could read — over 60 years. We are suckers. We believe the spin those bastards put on everything to do with NCSU. It has gotten better on the surface the covert anti-NCSU reporting is still there. Tudor has been semi for NCSU lately. I’m waiting for the hammer to come down.

  20. redfred2 09/15/2006 at 1:57 PM #

    Wolfpack4ever

You’re the #69’er on this thread. I think we need to point that out from now on.

  21. redfred2 09/15/2006 at 1:59 PM #

That is the number of your post in order, before that is taken differently from intended.

  22. redfred2 09/15/2006 at 2:06 PM #

“We believe the spin those bastards put on everything to do with NCSU.”

Exactly. What a bunch bunch of cattle being herded to the slaughter.

This wasn’t a good thing CA to say at all, but it was prompted, and I’ll tell you, people cling, they hang on just one thing, and believe it to death. It takes is a slight insinuation to get the ball rolling, and the media with 800 lbs. Oreck Excel sucks up everything in it’s path.

  23. jbhill77 09/16/2006 at 10:24 PM #

37-17 Now that’s demoralizing. Anyone who doesn’t think that it’s time for a coaching change by now needs to take the freakin blinders off. If you still feel that Chuck is the man for the job, then you must truly enjoy losing and obviously don’t have the love for NCSU that I do.

  24. redfred2 09/17/2006 at 9:26 PM #

It’s now 9/17/06. Looks like the 2006 Wolfpack football season will be one to drag on and on forever.
