191 is light for a QB… he’s a skinny guy. BC’s DL isnt nearly as big as it was last year… BYU’s OL had no problem with them, and they are relativly small.

anyways, I think we could ALL use a big laugh, and this did it for me. You guys gotta check this out http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoID=1134056088

great move—falls under the ‘what do we have to lose’ category—however—the boy has a great mind and more than adequate arm—smart enough not to open himself up for the big hit—that’s why he played four years in high scholl at a buck sixty without injury—he knows how to get to the ground—a skill that he’ll probably have to employ saturday—good luck danny—spot the ball!!!

The graduation rate is down. That may get some action from the administration.

  4. WolfPup35 09/18/2006 at 7:08 PM #

Grad rates in college athletics can be misleading, how many athletes have left early during Amato’s tenure (low grad rates are also affected by transfers)

so are players leaving for the NFL

  6. Woof Wolf 09/18/2006 at 7:17 PM #

    It was a joke, guys.

I have tickets to the BC game, so expect some scathing first hand comentary win or lose. Either way I can be and will be highly critical of most if not all coaching decisions. If CTC pulls Evans for some bullshit reason like 1 INT or something…OMFG the Carter will erupt in boos and curses like never before. I have every confidence in Evans, and hope the rest of the stadium shares that feeling. Besides, what do we have to lose???

I think the Evans move was halfway right, should be Burke unless he has a noodle arm. But I agree if either of the two younger guys was better than Stone why didn’t we see them earlier?

This is actually a fairly good time to make the change for a couple of reasons. It gives Daniel Evans a chance to show what he can do, against an average at best defense. It will quiet the Boo-birds, because in my experience State fans are reasonable with younger guys. Just look how well we received Stone last year. The other thing that may be overlooked, is it actually can give Stone a second life something like Rex Grossman while he was at Florida. In the event Evans struggles to badly, Stone can be reinserted after the fans have had a chance to see the alternative. If last weeks perfromanace turns out to be overstated, than we will have to be more patient with Stone. If I am not mistaken Grossman got benched early on, Spurrior and the fans got a look at Ingle Martin, and next thing you know Martin is at Furman and Grossman is in the league. Obviously Stone is nowhere near the talent of Grossman (or Martin for that matter) but with a fresh perspective maybe everyone, coaches and fans, handles the situation better.

Or we’ll hear boos til we get to see Burke.

In reference to his size, I bet he is neither 6’2″ nor 191. Football roster tradition is fat guys lose 20% body weight in the program, and undersized guys find an inch or 10 pounds, or in Evans case, both. he was 6’2 175 last year and I bet he is maybe 6’1″ right when he wakes up, and 6’0″ when he lays down at night. To stay on my Florida theme, he looks like Shane Matthews physically.

All right then, people. It’s about 45 minutes to MNF….so I gotta go get some more of the magic brew…I’ll check up on the mindless banter later on. Everyone remember two important things……Regardless of anything, NCSU is the greatest place on the planet, and Guinness is the greatest gift God himself bestowed upon us. GO WOLFPACK!!!

  10. Wolfpack4ever 09/18/2006 at 8:14 PM #

Did I read here where someone suggests throwing Burke to the wolves (no pun intended) if DE is no better than MS?

I wonder how Greco takes this if he knows. I thought Greko showed the run element in the Spring game and looke pretty good passing.

What makes the QB position any less open to experimentation, than say a running back when he’s having an off day? If the skill is there, and it is a flat out and known commodity, then ride it out until the kid comes back around. Not the case at QB for NCSU right now. Otherwise, try every situation until someone shows some promise. I say we missed our golden opportunity in three games against the OOC, but it’s never too late learn something new.

But if they come out in the ‘protect against the loss at all costs’ mode again, we’ll be no better off then before.

  12. Woof Wolf 09/18/2006 at 9:34 PM #

I agree. We are not good enough this year for the defense and kicking game to win without some points from the offense. If we open it up, we are going to make some mistakes. We are going to lose some, but will at least have a chance to win some.

    6 – 6 or 5 – 7 is a lot better than 2 – 10 or 1 – 11. We may even get enough experience to have 10 or 12 pages in the play book next year.

Golden opportunity? 20/20 hindsight. Had we put Evans in the 1stQ against Akron and started him against SM, there is no guarantee of any more positive out come. And can you hear the screaming now. Lost to Akron and SM? What was he thinking about?

  14. Woof Wolf 09/18/2006 at 9:41 PM #

What if he started the season and we won all three games?

  15. Texpack 09/18/2006 at 9:54 PM #

This was the obvious move to make during the off season. At least he’s pulling the trigger now.

  16. McPete 09/18/2006 at 10:06 PM #

A weak arm is not the biggest concern I have over DE. The offense does not require one to execute Trestman’s playbook. It’s decision-making, and I saw Evans in the spring game throw at least one interception and seemingly force some throws. He looked just as good as MS in the game, however. Perhaps he can make the quick decision necessary and have some touch on the short pass that MS sorely lacks. If so, the offense will help our young defense stay out of must-stop situations and our season may not be as bad as i fear it could be. However, I wonder why Justin Burke isn’t considered in the mix for the starting job. We know Amato will start a freshman at any position if he can help the team. We know that the staff considers JB a ‘cerebral’ guy. Does he not grasp the playbook? Is the playbook well-suited to the talent on the team? We’ll surely find out as our ACC season begins this Saturday. I’ll be at CF and i hope that all Wolfpack fans will still cheer as loudly as possible wherever they watch the game and support the team unconditionally.

Evans is a legit 6’2″. 191 might be stretching a bit, more like 175 last time I saw him.

The most popular guy on any team is the backup QB. This is the right move for now for several reasons.
    1. Stone would have been booed unmercilessly every chance. Imagine him back to pass, no one open, and he throws it away out of bounds. The right play in that circumstance, but the crowd would rag him big time.
    2. Stone was awful last year against BC. Forget the lucky pass/run of 90 yards, that was a fluke. We kept hearing 5-1, well the 1 was the awful game against BC.
    3. Give Evans a chance, nothing to lose.
    4. Have Stone ready to come in in relief. Maybe he is better in relief. Stone is a fighter, and amazing what this might do for him (or it could kill his confidence completely).

Lastly, Stone was heavily recruited out of HS as a QB, and has had Mazzone and Trestman to learn under. Mazzone needs no additional comment, and Trestman’s offense is way too complicated. It will be interesting to see what Evans does. He is like his dad, knows the game, and relies on his head.

^I like the use the word suspect instead of “complicated”

Caulton Tudor’s piece today on the switch is fantastic, especially on the mindset of defensive vs. offensive headcoaches.

  20. vtpackfan 09/19/2006 at 7:28 AM #

At a glance thought process for Chuck and coaching staff:
1)MS had his hands full with BC D last year, so this may just be an added wrinkle used to throw off the Eagles D coachs when watching film.
2)The best (but not always smartest) way to force an opposing teams hand in how they are going to come after you is to put in an inexperienced back up QB. Not that it would have been much different with MS in there, but you know that BC is going to put 9 guys in the box and blitz the QB at every early opportunity (every college team takes this approach in these circumstances).
    3) I buy into the crowd factor theory about buying time until the boo birds sing with DE instead of MS in there to a point. BCs QB Ryan has the potential to shread our DBs if we don’t find a way to take him out of a rythm early on. Will the boo birds sing if Chuckys D looks like ND hosting Michigan last weekend? He is a defensive mastermind and our QB has very little impact on that side of the ball so we’ll have to wait and see.

  21. BoKnowsNCS71 09/19/2006 at 8:21 AM #

Daniel will face a challenge. AJ will still not play. Durell is out. And Luke Latham our orimary center is out for the BC game. This is the time for the team to pull together during this time of adversity.

  22. Packaholic1 09/19/2006 at 9:23 AM #

I have heard over and over from “sports radio experts” that PR “throws like a girl” and would “never play in the nfl”. It has gotten to the point where I discount everything an “expert” says by 50% right off the bat.

I guess we’ll see if Evans has a weak arm or not.

    “20/20 hindsight.”

Call it hindsight, foresight, far sight, or whatever.

I never said Evans or anyone should start a game in front of Stone in that post. I clearly said, and have said all along, that no matter the outcome if your QB is not producing, then you need to give the back ups some experience “IN A (((REAL))) GAME SITUATION.” That is so they’ll be better prepared when needed. That time can come at any second, in practice, a game, or because of someone stepping off of a curb wrong.

“I never said Evans or anyone should start a game in front of Stone in that post.”

And Bill Clinton said, “I did not have sex with that woman.”

In a thread labeled “Daniel Evans to Start vs Boston Collegeâ€? you said, “we missed our golden opportunity in three games against the OOC, but it’s never too late learn something new.” Since Evans played in game 3, you “clearly” implied starting. You protestations that you CLEARLY said something else is very Clintonesque.
