Stunning. So much has happened that I can’t even remember the name of the QB who transferred to CC form Pack this summer. Does Daniel Evans have a full scholly? I saw him play once or twice at Broughton and was very impressed with his accuracy throwing the long ball, but always had some doubts that he could improve in the arm strength area so critical in throwing the short and miidle range passes on a “rope”. More like an Elvis Grbac, but that was years ago and I have’nt seen him since. I can’t wait to see the game on tv (my first other than highlights), although I have gotten more then my share of BC coverage up here. The Eagles have looked pretty pathetic on D so far this season, save a couple nice individual plays in OT when everyone is suckin’ wind. I hope Amato gives young Daniel a chance, atleast 3 qtrs., none of the monkey show two series and your out like we saw of the Davis, Stone and Tresselman show last year.

BC’s run defense is HORRIBLE… with just a little bit of the thought that we MIGHT have some throwing game, we could so some light on this game.

BYU should have beat BC last weekend!

    ‘show some light… excuse me.

Daniel is the son of Johnny Evans — well respected past Wolfpack QB and punter. He grew up with a great teacher — his father. I’m sure he will be confident based on the family background he has. Just hope the OL can protect him. Amato has to experiment. Playing the respect the seniority game is too conservative.

We had to change something, and this was really the only logical move to make. BYU and Clemson shredded the Eagle defense, so it’s a good spot for Evans to take the reins.

But don’t expect this move to be a panacea.

  6. choppack1 09/18/2006 at 4:16 PM #

Good move, and it had to be made. I sincerely hope that they find a place for Stone. It would be a shame for all of those physical skills to go to waste.

Stone could always play LB beside of Reggie Davis, he could do any worse!

  8. redfred2 09/18/2006 at 4:26 PM #

Hey, don’t get me wrong, I’m glad to see a change, any change, and for a change, but, how about gradual progression?

Marcus Stone has been the #1 cook and bottle washer with only about two or three recipes to follow. Next it’s an inexperienced red shirt Evans, straight up and out of the freezer and directly onto the flame, with a home crowd of very frustrated fans analyzing his every move.

I don’t know, doesn’t seem to be a wise move, but just from the standpoint of whether he should be the starting QB in the ACC opener and with an antsy crowd?

^Good point. I’m a bit worried myself…but a part of me is also happy to hear this. Still…there’s not much turning back. We’ve essentially told Stone now that he’s this year’s Jay Davis. That can’t sit well. And I worry there had to be some reason Stone got the nod over Evans preseason besides senoirity.

That said…I’d be lying if I claimed that I didn’t feel better about the upcoming game.

Chuck knew he had to change something. Some of the crowd would have gotten hostile real quick Saturday if Stone started and things didn’t go well. I think this is a good move. I hope they make some changes on defense also. If we have to burn a red shirt or two, so be it.

Let’s get behind Daniel and the rest of the team Saturday night and give them a chance to do well before we pile on anymore.

I am becoming more and more convinced that Chuck is not the man for the job long term. but we are stuck with him at least for the rest of the year. This is a positive move because it shows that they recognize that they have to be flexible enough to admit they may have some mistakes and try something different. I know this isn’t going to fix all the problems and could be the wrong move. but it would be foolish at this point not to try it.

  11. redfred2 09/18/2006 at 5:03 PM #

^Actually, after thinking for a minute, I’m happy too. Stone possibly would have had the crowd on his back from the get go. This should allow for some pre-game excitement and possibly provide Evans a little more leeway with the fans than Stone would get at moment.

The learning curve provided in the early OOC has been squandered away, this is where it all begins to take shape. We’ll see.

You have to start somewhere – and the truth is that he was going to have to be thrown to the wolves some time. I actually think the crowd will surprise you w/how they treat Evans. The atmosphere would have been very ugly if Stone didn’t move the ball early – remember, it’s a night game so folks are going to be more vocal than normal. I think Evans will get more rope than Stone would have.

IMHO, this was one of only 2 viable options Amato and Trestman had. The other option was to start Burke.

  13. packpigskinfan23 09/18/2006 at 5:05 PM #

this is a move to get everyone off Amato’s back right now. If he started Stone, first mistake that was made would be met with boo’s 5 times louder then anything we heard at the Clemson game last year. If it changes our momentum at all then GREAT. I am nervous about it… but I guess nerves are better then the feeling of expecting the worst.

after all, this is the start of the ACC, and the start of a new season of sorts….

  14. Slader4881 09/18/2006 at 5:07 PM #

I say give Evans a shot, if he struggles give Burke a shot. We really dont have anything to lose at this point.

Stone was great last year with an amazing D. This year the D has fallen off with people going to the NFL, so we cant expect the same results.

  15. redfred2 09/18/2006 at 5:26 PM #

    chop,

You were typing at the same time I was, but yours was a more in depth statement which I totally agree.

  16. GAWolf 09/18/2006 at 5:27 PM #

The truth of the matter is that Stone would have gotten booed off the field Saturday night. That wouldn’t be good for Stone, the fans, or the University.

The change HAD to be made.

I hope the Evans kid plays really well and wins the spot for the remainder of the season. Now can we change the head coach like we changed the QB?

  18. redfred2 09/18/2006 at 5:31 PM #

A lot of us were talking about the 2007 season before this season ever started. I just really hate see a dumbass puppeteers waiting until conference play before they contemplate pulling their first string. That frustrates me to no end.

  19. redfred2 09/18/2006 at 5:34 PM #

This 2006 season is a 12 game tune up for the future. Has been, from a long while back.

    Jamie Barnette?

  21. WolfPup35 09/18/2006 at 5:57 PM #

I hear you, Jamie Barnette. This could be the start of a beautiful friendship, let’s just hope the O-Line can provide some blocking so the poor kid don’t get broken in half. The pedigree speaks for itself, but the one concern I have is his small stature….how tall is the BC D-line and will he be able to see the field?? No question, he has the tools to get the job done, but it’s (and I’m definitely gonna get some chuckles out of this) all about CHOPPING WOOD :). The O-line has to do thier part, every snap, every second, every play. Now, then, let’s see if trestboy trusts Daniel enough to open up the playpage..er…playbook and go downfield to the horses we got at WR. We already know about the RB stable we got, so let’s test these kids and see what they can do.

  22. WolfPup35 09/18/2006 at 5:58 PM #

hey no pun intended with the CHUCKles comment there…ok, ok, yes there was.

  23. redfred2 09/18/2006 at 6:14 PM #

^^That was supposed to be “a bunch of dumbass puppeteers” in that post above.

Patented rant to follow, delete if necessary.

I am telling you there is a funk and engrained in the minds of everyone from the very top down to very lowest on the totem pole at NC State University right now. The basketball coach was allowed to stick with an unsatisfactory formula for years and later moved on because of it, and the football coaches are no exception right now. It is passed on and expected from the very highest levels on down through the chain of command, a wait and see attitude with a loser’s mentality attached. It permeates everything it touches and works it’s way into every soul that is even slighty involved in any aspect of the NCSU athletics departments.

Slap on the back…it’s OK…we’re fine with the job you’re doing…what’d YOU expect out of yourself…. End of story, end of coaching career at NC State University.

That is, we’re not going to rock your boat, we’ll just sit back and watch as things start to decay all around you and your life here becomes a living hell from the outside influences, not us, we’re all gentlemen around here. Then, at that point in time, it will be all your decision to go elsewhere or not. Either way, you can’t say we, the administration, had any infuence whatsoever.

  24. redfred2 09/18/2006 at 6:20 PM #

Receivers can’t set the world on fire if the foot balls aren’t getting there. I loved Jamie Barnette and he never got the recognition that he deserved.

  25. WTNY 09/18/2006 at 6:22 PM #

Gopack.com lists Evans as 6′-2″. If I were to worry it wouldn’t be about his height but rather his weight of 191.
