Terry Holland Comments In the N&O

We meant to link this up on Thursday morning but forgot. It is a really nice read from one of our favorite ADs, Terry Holland. This last comment really stood out.

Holland said it bothered him that N.C. State would travel to play C-USA team Southern Miss this weekend while “depressed” eastern North Carolina would benefit emotionally and financially from a Greenville visit from a major program. But Holland praised N.C. State and UNC for scheduling trips to Greenville beginning next season.

“They’ve been good to us, and we realize this,” Holland said. “We have to make it win-win. It can’t be asking State to play us to do us a favor. They need to do what’s best for them. It’s on our shoulders.”

So why don’t we cut Western Carolina a “favor” and play in Cullowhee.

Lastly…while we are talking about our favorite Athletics Directors, you really need to click on this if you haven’t already seen it.

How about App State in Boone? or maybe Campbell in Buies Creek?

  2. Clarksa 09/14/2006 at 9:48 PM #

How ’bout UNC-CH take a trip to Greenville? Why doesn’t Terry talk about them?

  3. packof81 09/14/2006 at 9:54 PM #

How about Duke? or Wake Forest?

  4. SuperStuff 09/14/2006 at 10:14 PM #

We’ve played that program way more than UNC-CH, Duke, or Wake Forest. You have nothing to gain and everything to lose by playing them.

It must be one of those partial qualifier things

  6. WolfPup35 09/14/2006 at 10:17 PM #

HEY UNC…….IF YER SCARED SAY YER SCARED!!!!!

  7. TomCat 09/14/2006 at 10:27 PM #

What he says has some merit. How many pack fans will be traveling to Hattiesburg, MS? It’ll be a ‘pack’ed house in Greenville next year- count on it & every dollar spent will be in-state. I have no problem playing the Pirates. Greenville is only 55 mins away from Raleigh with the new Knightdale bypass. Eastern North Carolina has strong NCSU fan base. As with all games- just win.

SFN: Last year, when State played USM in Raleigh and ECU played a game at home on the same day….how much money was spent “in state”? A helluva lot more than when the two teams play each other. ESPECIALLY when the teams host visitors from out of state who come to the state and spend money. The ‘economic benefits’ argument has been shot down with more holes than a Krispy Kreme factory in the past.

    Tomcat

True, all true. But I’m not looking to eastern NC’s GDP by playing ECU every other weekend. Let them find someone big from elsewhere to come in there. We need some publicly and better quality opponents to raise the quality of our own program.

That’s exactly what Terry Holland is shaming us into doing for him and ECU, and at our expense.

^Too tired to type, sorry. I’m gone.

I say we add Fresno State as a home and home now. Living on the West Coast, Fresno is like our ECU. Except they win. Hey, it would cost a lot for the travel but we’d get some of this CA talent out of the deal. Plus Amato and Pat Hill might actually throw down themselves.

  11. C Dog 09/15/2006 at 7:14 AM #

UNC played ECU in Greenville a couple of years ago. Sorry to bother you guys with the facts.

  12. Texpack 09/15/2006 at 7:14 AM #

We’ll have to see how the new coach feels about the ECU series.

I wonder what Pat Hill would say if he read the WSJournal article on what really happened? No excusing what Chuck said, just got a lot of empathy. Unlike most on SFN, I’ve screwed the pooch a time or two myself. Let’s be real about Chuck: he wasn’t raised in the wine and cheese communities our neighbors at Duke and UNC were raised in. And we knew it when we hired him. You could see it at his first press conference.

We are acting like we accuse the limp wrists at UNC of acting. How many women marry a man because they like his macho BS and then in the second week of marriage in not sooner start in on him for being the way he is — trying to change him.

And so it is with State fans and Chuck. We knew he took no crap off anybody when we hired him and now some of us want him sucking up to the chicken-shit crowd of “journalists” at the N&O.

Chuck’s problem is not the he needs to grow up (some of us think that growing up means acting like we think people should act). I say Chuck’s “problem” is that he won’t take the crap those C-S reporters try to dish out from behind the sheild of their press credentials. Well, it ain’t a problem for me. Keep standing tall, Chuck. Run the table and shut the assholes up.

“Rip ’em up! Tear ’em up, Give ’em hell, State.”

OR “Rip ’em up! Tear ’em up, Give ’em hell, Chuck.”

    Note to loyal Texpack,

There’ll be no new coach. Take of your coat-Tex and sit back and get used to it.

Texas? Isn’t that where men’s belt bucles are inversly proportional to their winkies?

wp4ever – His recent won-loss record bothers me more than his statements. If he had gone 5-3 the last 2 years in conference, he could show up to pc’s in pink tutu and I wouldn’t care.

  16. Packaholic1 09/15/2006 at 8:18 AM #

During Bobby Bowden’s 6th – 11th seasons at FSU (1981-86), they had a combined record of 46-22-3. 22 of those wins were over Memphis State (2), Cincinnati (2), ECU (3), Louisville (3), Tulane (3), Kansas (2), So Ill, WCU, Temple, Tenn-Chatt, Tulsa, Toledo and Wichita State.

The previous 4 years FSU had been 39-8.

Let’s show a little patience. The foundation is being laid for wins and hopefully we’ll get one against Southern Miss.

Whine — whoine – whine. Jeeez == We are playing them this year and they get a good paycheck from that.

Duke and WF played them last year. Duke played in Ficklen Stadium but that doen’t bring any money in since Duke has no attendance. Duke could schedule all their games there but ECU would go broke.

We play then at the end of this year. Our place is bigger and they get a good paycheck from us. Scehduling the game down there isn’t going to bring that much money to the town.

    Wolfpack4ever –

There’s a big difference between acting like a f’ing jerk while babbling senseless “non-qualifier” crap and a truly passionate coach that knows X’s and O’s and how to win AND how to lose with class.

choppack1 is right. I wouldn’t care if Amato came to a press conference in nothing but sunglasses and a gym towel, as long as he handled himself like a man instead of a whinny ass kid whose just got his ass whipped by the smaller kid down the street.

I’m going to post this again because I think bears repeating and backs up some posts above. I also have to get a little work done today, see ya.

I had to speed read all of the posts above, but it seems that a lot of us had fallen prey to very thing that I hate most, that is believing what you read and hear from first reports and intial the shock value that the dreaded media A-holes proliferate and thrive on.

I’m guilty. I didn’t bash CA, but I did lose perspective and I should have known better. I’m not ancient, but I’m old enough, and have seen it enough, to know that what sales best, is plain ol’ dirt. The more it shakes up and bothers the parties involved, the more they keep right on diggin it up.

Like I said before, Chuck Amato is ours. He is NC State’s Head Football coach. Treat him like it.

I’d love nothing more than to hear that there is a traveling contingent of NC State fans in the stands this weekend who give Coach Chuck Amato a huge standing ovation when he hits the field and when his name is announced over the PA system. The press and the rest of the country need to know that we are not splineless morons turn on our own people at the drop of a hat, and like they want everyone to believe. We need to make a showing that says we aren’t going to be easily manipulated by every piece of press or media mud slinging around anymore.

Let’s stop acting as the media portrays us. We have a football coach who has made some great strides in areas. Also one who I know would never say it, but could really use a little love from his alma mater right about now.

    GO PACK!!!

    BladenWolf Says:

“There’s a big difference between acting like a f’ing jerk while babbling senseless “non-qualifierâ€? crap…”

BladenWolf, I am going to assume you haven’t read John DeLong’s article he wrote in the WSJournal. I was feelling like you until I did. I also assume that you have not read anything else I have written on the subject — your comments to me surely indicate that.

Repeating myself, here’s where I’m coming from. After 3 days of being the way everyone would like him to be — acknowledging that he got beat, out-coached, etc., by a good Akron team — Chuck caved in and hit back. You would never know it from what got reported and the way it got reported. HIs remarks — as bad as they were — got taken out of context by the yellow-journalists who badgered him for 3 days with the same “why do you beat your wife” unanswerable questions and reached the “I ain’t gonna take this shit any longer” point and fired back at them.

If you are truly a State fan and I have no reason to believe you aren’t, check out WSJournal article and get yourself straight about what really happened.

How substituting an old Tammy Wynette favorite for the fight song for a few weeks? Play the fuzzy black and whte video with big blonde bee hive hair do all up there on the jumbotron for everyone to see.

Before anyone jumps, that is a joke.

  22. redfred2 09/15/2006 at 9:17 AM #

I’ll say this, if CA had qualified for the BCS last season, and this loss was just a fluke, people would be standing up for him all over Wolfpack country.

That’s a lot of if’s, but Chuck Amato is here for now, let’s all just get a grip, and please stop acting in a way that the media ridicules us for already.

Ride it out and try to stay positive. We’ll find out on the football field, but don’t let the world see NCSU imploding over a MEDIA event. They would love that more than anything.

Let’s let football tell the story, not be beaten down to nothing again by the F’N MEDIA.

  23. packpigskinfan23 09/15/2006 at 9:42 AM #

we play ECU a lot… I’m not worried about any of this media induced hype.

  24. packpigskinfan23 09/15/2006 at 9:51 AM #

wouldnt you guys LOVE to have the O Coordinator from West Virginia with the 2 great backs we have?!

    wow that would be fun!

    =)

the first quarter of that game was crazy… looked like Maryland forgot what sport they were playing. IF WV cleans slate, I dont care WHO they play… they should be in the Championshop game.

  25. redfred2 09/15/2006 at 10:04 AM #

I am surprised someone hasn’t jumped me already for the way I treated the former BB coach in comparison. Golden opportunity. Wulf, where are you?

This is different, gameday performances have not been stellar in the least, but individuals coming through that system have reached on up to the highest plateau and taken their rightful place there. There is still an underlying air of optimism, great potential, great new facilities, and the highest expectation level in the history of the program. Let’s not jump ship and forget who helped to put all of that in place.

Maybe Chuck Amato needs a promotion instead of being shit canned. He has done more and accomplished more in areas that don’t really fall under his umbrella. Could it be that CA is a better AD than he is a coach? He’s certainly brought in new life into a place that was in dire need and accomplished what those above could not.

Either way, this little stumbling block may just the thing to get his head back down out of the clouds and focused back on his primary target once again.
