Calls For Bunting’s Job Grow Louder

Today, the News & Observer is really focusing on the Bunting situation with a couple of articles, one of which is – “Clock ticks on Bunting”.. Additionally, this entry @ AOL highlights some recent articles.

Although it doesn’t surprise me that the world is FINALLY talking about the obvious…it continues to fascinate me how “hot” Chuck Amato’s seat has supposedly been (if you listen to the national media) while John Bunting has been able to skate by with a free pass from scrutiny with significantly worse performance than CTC.

It would be different if NC State fans REALLY were clamoring against Chuck Amato in large numbers that were disproportionate to any other fan base’s unhappiness, but the truth just does not support the onclusion that the media continues to juxtapose. Somebody says it…so it must be true!

As I stated almost two months ago in an entry that is very relevant to this entry, Coach Amato
has legitimate justification to be frustrated with the inconsistent recent media coverage of local programs. (Looks like the rest of the world is only two months behind what you see on SFN.)

This is no small issue as the coverage and focus as most definitely played a role in recent recruiting success at Carolina and decreased recruiting success in Raleigh. I am very pleased that we are finally getting a little ACCURATE focus on topic. It will be interesting to see if Carolina can hold together their strong recruiting class by signing day in light of some of the recent developments. The following are some key comments that I made in the previous entry.

The media’s inaccuracies and inability focus on the truth are starting to have a negative impact on the NC State program as it is various members of the media – at a level that is infinitely more intense than Wolfpack fans – that have insisted on writing articles about Coach Amato being “on the hotseat” while simultaneously (inaccurately) criticizing Amato for foolish reasons.

Think about this for a moment.

There is little to no doubt that John Bunting will be fired as UNC-CH’s football coach after this season if he turns in a performance that is just an average year for him. How much publicity is this topic getting? While Chuck Amato has succeeded in becoming one of the most successful football coaches in NC State history and has succeeded in elevating our program far above all other programs in the area, the media has decided to swarm like (uneducated) vultures on CTC’s job security.

The result? UNC-CH is experiencing one of the best recruiting classes in their history while NC State is experiencing our second slight downturn in a row from the standards of CTC’s first four recruiting classes.

Reality check…NC State’s program has quickly become an NFL factory while UNC’s has experienced more player turnover and attrition than is close to explicable. The success that Chuck Amato has generated at NC State dwarfs the overall success of what John Bunting has generated at Carolina in only one fewer season.

Yet, the media makes a huge deal of our successful coach being on “the hotseat” while Carolina’s unsuccessful coach gets NO public pressure or scrutiny and thereby allowing him to mislead recruits into thinking that his job is safe. Wouldn’t you be a little ticked at the idiocy and blatant disregard for reality?

OFFTOPIC HELP REQUEST: Sorry for the tangent. I’m going to be in Venice, Italy on 10/5. Do you guys have any advice for a way to see the Florida State game on ESPN? Is it simulcast on the web? Is anyone aware of ways to find sports bars in Europe? I know how lame this sounds, but I would really appreciate any help I can get.

Nobody likes to lose, in any sport. Believe me, 4-5 million is chump change to the rams club. It’s not about the money, it’s the image of impatience that they want to guard against. Yeah, it’s funny now but will it be if Roy’s team drubs Sidney’s for the next few years?
Let’s wait until CTC wins something before we get too giddy here.

  4. Woof Wolf 09/26/2006 at 9:00 PM #

It will be almost 2:00 AM local time when the game starts, I’ve never been to Venice but I doubt you’ll find a sports bar open.

I’ve travelled internationally a lot and don’t recall getting ESPN2 in any of the hotels. My suggestion is to pony up $9.95 for a month of “Pack Pass” and listen to the radio broadcast.

I live in Georgia and can’t get the radio shows any other way. I love Pack Pass.

  5. Andy 09/26/2006 at 9:15 PM #

Pack pass sometimes has video and you can also try state and fsu’s cstv sites. Also if the game is on espn gameplan you can pay $21 for a weekend pass and watch it on that

I agree we have had some great individual talent including some of the best players to ever play here. But this is football, not basketball. All it takes is one year to “catch lightening in a bottle” to strike it really big ala GT or Clemson. A prereq for doing so is having the talent in place. IMO it would be utterly assinine to change out coachs for someone who may be a better gameplanner/game day coach but who cannot acquire the talent needed to win the lottery (ala Sheridan). The fact that we have had such great talent albeit not at the same time is an argument FOR our coach, not against him.

Good coaches without the talent almost NEVER get lucky; somewhat lacking coaches do – see one Mack Brown. I don’t think there is anyone out there that can sell our university and bring in players as good as Chuck, at least one who would actually come.

Having said all that we could still have a great season if things play out well so how about lets can this kind of talk and support the team.

Is that you Jethro? Or is it CTC?

  8. statered 09/26/2006 at 9:39 PM #

LMFAO is that a concession that you just lost the argument?

  9. RegularExpression 09/26/2006 at 9:47 PM #

To return to the topic of the media finally taking notice of the stink rising from Chapel Hill – it is funny to me that almost every article I read mentions that UNC has lost by 30+ 12 times. Not 40+ 5 times or 20+ 16 times.(I’m making those numbers up, but the point remains) If I read that figure again I will know that the author did his “research” for the article by reading and regurgitating another paper or website.

  10. Woof Wolf 09/26/2006 at 9:49 PM #

I’m still hoping for the great season. I don’t want to win the argument. I just think we need to be realistic and get ready to plan for the future if we fall on our butts.

  11. statered 09/26/2006 at 9:54 PM #

I’ll just say this – Lee should always have a list handy. He sure didn’t last time. I can guarantee that Bad-odor doesn’t.

  12. Woof Wolf 09/26/2006 at 9:57 PM #

    Okay. I’ll buy that.

  13. choppack1 09/26/2006 at 11:04 PM #

“I’m saying John needs to go 2-1 over the next 3 …. Miami, USF, UVa. Our folks will treat USF with the same snooty disdain we did Rutgers … and likely w/ the same results.”

I’d agree. Of course, this sets up the nightmare scenario for Wolfpack fans – a loss to UNC AND Bunting is fired.

  14. Woof Wolf 09/26/2006 at 11:21 PM #

Don’t even go there. Whatever else happens, we have to beat them and ECTC.

  15. WolfPup35 09/26/2006 at 11:35 PM #

Miami?? No Chance! USF?? Perhaps a narrow 2 point win after giving up 600 yds rushing. Uva?? This will be a turning point for the UVa program after blitzing the Holes for 56 pts. And of course, the job-ending loss to ACC powerhouse Duke. (They’ll probably give up a total of 1,000 yds between the two…..on the ground) More power to keeping him for another 6 yrs.

    statered,

So somebody on this blog realizes football is a team game and 3 or 13 top picks in the draft from either the O or D want get it.

Fowler keep a list? Is this the AD’s wish list. Do you think he can talk to any of them and test the water? Think again. Not ethically he can’t. I hate to hear the “Jed” comments. Reminds me of the Tarholes and their hauty-tauty attitude about State grads.

  17. Mike 09/27/2006 at 1:35 AM #

    Wolfpack4ever,

My comment – “Of course CTC and Bowden would say he is a great coach. Bowden wants the guaranteed win every year. CTC should relish the chance to win every year, but for some reason we choke this one away.â€? – that you seemed to criticize……..I was saying that tongue in cheek. I was saying the other coaches want Bunting to stay – it’s like the visiting pitcher getting shelled. When the manager comes out, the crowd shouts back and forth, “Take him out……..Leave him in” You’re killing the guy, why do you want him taken out? You dont, you want him in there throwing up the meat balls that you can clobber over the fence. The only problem is, for some reason Bunting has had Chuck’s number the last 2 years, but only Chuck’s.

I dont think this is loony at all, nor do I think it gives blogs a bad name. Some of us try to add a little humor but in the humor must also have some merit to it.

    Mike Says:

“Some of us try to add a little humor but in the humor must also have some merit to it.”

Mike, I can now how you meant that as humor, but do you realize just how much of what you said in humor is said in all seriousness in an effort to cut Chuck and lessen his credibility? I guess I have a low tolerance for criticism of people behind their backs in the safety of the anonmymous internet.

It’s not that people have a difference of opinion about what Chuck does or doesn’t do that gets me hot under the collar, it’s that they use their dumb-assed opinions to insinuate that he is stupid and to discredit him, suggesting he ought to be fired for not thinking like they do. Not all here but a very large number.

I’m sorry you got “rained on” in my storm.

“It’s not that people have a difference of opinion about what Chuck does or doesn’t do that gets me hot under the collar, it’s that they use their dumb-assed opinions to insinuate that he is stupid and to discredit him, suggesting he ought to be fired for not thinking like they do. Not all here but a very large number.”

Chuck says things that are stupid, and does so repeatedly – most recently in reference to the Akron debacle. Moan about the media if you wish, but that was nationally circulated stupidity and understandably so. And this, again, was only the most recent stupid comment, added to inane hacks on the fans – as if Chuck loses to UNC because the fans “don’t know how to cheer.”

Chuck’s teams also tend to do stupid things, and do them over, and over, and over again. Lost in the BC game joy is that we picked up yet another stupid penalty for smacking the punter on fourth down. How many times have you seen us do that?

If I have thought Chuck needed to be fired – and the BC win bought him some time in my book – it’s not because he doesn’t think like I do. It’s because his conduct off the field is a humilation to the school and his on the field product comes nowhere near to matching the enormous hype with which it is offered.

It’s OK to talk Top Ten. It’s not OK to talk Top Ten and lose to Akron and get blown out by Southern Miss.

  21. Cardiff Giant 09/27/2006 at 9:33 AM #

As for Bunting, if he beats UVa and beats us, he will be on the sidelines for UNC next season. This is the same shit we heard last year and the guy finished up one win away from bowl eligibility.

  22. RickJ 09/27/2006 at 9:45 AM #

“Lost in the BC game joy is that we picked up yet another stupid penalty for smacking the punter on fourth down. How many times have you seen us do that?”

A few times but no where near the number of times we have blocked kicks. Aggressively trying to block kicks is a risk – reward proposal and we are way ahead of the game on this deal. Sometimes roughing a kicker is stupid but not in the BC game. The kid had a great chance to block that kick.

By the way – I agree that Amato’s team do make the same mistakes far to often but just not in this case. With the offense we have this year, we are going to need big plays by our special teams.

  23. statered 09/27/2006 at 10:19 AM #

Cardiff – I think his comments were unwise but not stupid. They were spun as stupid by media and our detractors. You could say it was stupid to even go there knowing the way the world works but the comments by themselves were not stupid. If you want to base your opinion on what everyone else says about a subject, well then go ahead.

  24. Cardiff Giant 09/27/2006 at 10:34 AM #

^ Actually, I base my opinion on this premise: Citing the presence of three non-qualifiers on a MAC team, who has just beaten your ACC program in your own stadium, as a factor in that loss is just plain stupid. That’s all.

  25. Wulfpack 09/27/2006 at 10:48 AM #

^Agreed. I don’t care how much the media irritated him up to that point. His comments show a severe lack of tact. Chuck HAD to know the media was going to run all over it, and boy did they ever. Sometimes you get what you deserve.

I think the BC win was huge for this program. I really do. We’ll begin to play much better. At least there is now hope for the season, especially considering this conference has been pretty bad up to this point. I watched that S. Miss game last night, they didn’t look to good. It could be a tale of two seasons for the mighty resurgent Wolfpack.
