Calls For Bunting’s Job Grow Louder

Today, the News & Observer is really focusing on the Bunting situation with a couple of articles, one of which is – “Clock ticks on Bunting”.. Additionally, this entry @ AOL highlights some recent articles.

Although it doesn’t surprise me that the world is FINALLY talking about the obvious…it continues to fascinate me how “hot” Chuck Amato’s seat has supposedly been (if you listen to the national media) while John Bunting has been able to skate by with a free pass from scrutiny with significantly worse performance than CTC.

It would be different if NC State fans REALLY were clamoring against Chuck Amato in large numbers that were disproportionate to any other fan base’s unhappiness, but the truth just does not support the onclusion that the media continues to juxtapose. Somebody says it…so it must be true!

As I stated almost two months ago in an entry that is very relevant to this entry, Coach Amato
has legitimate justification to be frustrated with the inconsistent recent media coverage of local programs. (Looks like the rest of the world is only two months behind what you see on SFN.)

This is no small issue as the coverage and focus as most definitely played a role in recent recruiting success at Carolina and decreased recruiting success in Raleigh. I am very pleased that we are finally getting a little ACCURATE focus on topic. It will be interesting to see if Carolina can hold together their strong recruiting class by signing day in light of some of the recent developments. The following are some key comments that I made in the previous entry.

The media’s inaccuracies and inability focus on the truth are starting to have a negative impact on the NC State program as it is various members of the media – at a level that is infinitely more intense than Wolfpack fans – that have insisted on writing articles about Coach Amato being “on the hotseat” while simultaneously (inaccurately) criticizing Amato for foolish reasons.

Think about this for a moment.

There is little to no doubt that John Bunting will be fired as UNC-CH’s football coach after this season if he turns in a performance that is just an average year for him. How much publicity is this topic getting? While Chuck Amato has succeeded in becoming one of the most successful football coaches in NC State history and has succeeded in elevating our program far above all other programs in the area, the media has decided to swarm like (uneducated) vultures on CTC’s job security.

The result? UNC-CH is experiencing one of the best recruiting classes in their history while NC State is experiencing our second slight downturn in a row from the standards of CTC’s first four recruiting classes.

Reality check…NC State’s program has quickly become an NFL factory while UNC’s has experienced more player turnover and attrition than is close to explicable. The success that Chuck Amato has generated at NC State dwarfs the overall success of what John Bunting has generated at Carolina in only one fewer season.

Yet, the media makes a huge deal of our successful coach being on “the hotseat” while Carolina’s unsuccessful coach gets NO public pressure or scrutiny and thereby allowing him to mislead recruits into thinking that his job is safe. Wouldn’t you be a little ticked at the idiocy and blatant disregard for reality?

    Good post!

Bob Lee- I said before and I’ll say it again, the average Tar Heel was once synonymous with the average Dallas Cowboy fan. They were once one in the same and on board hot and heavy when everything is going they’re way, then acting as if it doesn’t really matter at the drop of a hat when things go sour. When anyone points it out to one of them, it is quickly followed up with the patented “WAIT UNTIL BASKETBALL SEASON!” slogan.

Its funny how the tables seem to have turned on the “We deserve to have an excellent program” bit after our basketball coaching search.

Things I heard on the radio today talking about UNC football
“UNC has been a nationally successful program, just not recently” refering to an ACC champ in early 80’s and some nationally ranked teams under Mack.

“We deserve to have a competitive program”

“Coaching staff is not living up to expectations”

There were also comments expressing frustration with playing well some weeks and then getting blown out of the water the following week.

It makes me want to call into one of the shows and say “Your program just isn’t that desirable”, “How can you hope to hire a new coach if you run this guy out of town”, etc., etc.

Adam Gold was pretty honest about the media today on the early show. He did say that the media sticks its finger in the air and then writes stories with an edge. He condemmed many of the media.

I don’t know if it struck any of you but after State stopped making so many stupid fouls last year ESPN commentators would still keep harping on that as though it was still happening. I also noticed that we kept getting tagged as getting no in-state recruits when if one looked at the recruits clearly showed a lot of in-state recruits.

Bottom line is that most of these writers are feeding off old news and spinning the micro opinions into conroversy. ESPN gone Fox news so to speak. Controversy sells. Winning teams sell. The majority of the teams are in the middle so what can you look for? Players getting in trouble, fan comments, etc.

Amato was quoted as saying “Buntin is a great guy.” and even ole Tommy Bowden weighed in with “John is a great coach. They’d be crazy to let him go.”

  5. RAWFS 09/26/2006 at 4:13 PM #

If indeed those two said that about Bunting, it’s no surprise. Coaches usually stick together and the fact is that Bunting is a pretty good guy. Yes, he’s rankled State’s fans from time to time, but we’d have loved it if he were a State guy and he said whatever he said about Carolina (in other words, if the roles were reversed.)

I’ve had the oppurtunity to shake hands with Coach Bunting and have a brief word with him, and to be honest, I was impressed by his demeanor. He looks you straight in the eye, speaks directly to you and while it’s obvious he wasn’t playing all of his cards, he left me with the feeling that he’s pretty straight up.

All that said, John Bunting’s failings as a head coach will be what is his undoing at UNC if he does not turn their ship around lickety split. I honestly think that he needs to get them closer to .500 and beat both his in-town rivals or the drumbeats will be mighty loud indeed in December. If there’s one thing that sends even the deepest UNC basketball fan over the edge about football, it is losing to NC State. If we somehow manage to paste the Heels, his seat will resemble the grate of a gas grill.

“We’ve underachieved compared to his own hype if nothing else. ”

Bladen I completely disagree. Chuck compares very favorably to any coach we have had here with the exception of Holtz. Overall he is every bit as good as Sheridan who people want to elevate beyond his acheivements for some reason. Sorry, I remember the thrashing we received from Michigan too well. What Chuck does is talk about the dream and belief in the dream – like V. That some poeple have difficulty being balanced between where we are and our hopes and aspirations and what it takes to get there is not his fault.

I’m sure we’ll disagree but how about providing some direct quotes that can be backed up when talking about this hype next time m’kay? I perceived things far differently than you and just because you say its so does not make it true.

  7. Mike 09/26/2006 at 4:16 PM #

Of course CTC and Bowden would say he is a great coach. Bowden wants the guaranteed win every year. CTC should relish the chance to win every year, but for some reason we choke this one away.

“Please tell me you assembled these facts somewhere other than “read it on a boardâ€?. That 40K figure is especially interesting. Did you use telephone surveys, girls w/ clipboards in a mall, door to door pollsters ???”
It’s a shot in the dark – based roughly on season ticket sales – and the spotty attendance I’ve witnessed at Chapel Hill even for a game like the opener this year. It’s a guess – that’s all. I’m sure that if we both went 12-1 a few years straight, our tickets would be harder to find than Green Bay Packers tickets.

“The whole issue of “how seriously do UNCers take footballâ€? seem to me the LAST subject that would be discussed by NCSU fans considering the overall series and recent game results. Again … no flaming … but wouldn’t UNC nonchalance (if true) be insulting to NCSU? I understand UNC hardcore loonies raging about it, but why is it discussed here?”

Perhaps – I don’t know, the subject at hand was Bunting – and why there wasn’t the attacks from the media on him that Amato has dealt with since the 2005 season. One of my theories for the obvious discrepancy is that the media is giving each fanbase what they want….in this case, perhaps they perceive State football fans as more passionate. Ask them why they treat one person so differently than the other.

“Personally I’ve never bought in to the “UNC doesn’t really careâ€? theory. I think UNC fans care a great deal about both sports, but BB has enjoyed unparalled success past and present. If UNC did NOT care very much about FB I doubt they would hold such a series advantage over NCSU.

Maybe I’m missing something in my conclusion ???”

I don’t think it’s a matter of not caring, but rather not caring as much. Here’s where I think the success over rivals and the success in basketball deflects some of this. Likewise, State’s lack of “cigar-smoking” wins in both sports, increases the scrutiny on our HC’s for both college b’ball and football.

I’d only add that our outright futility in basketball – especially through the years 1992 to 2000 – and some satisfying victories during that same time period, and fantastic tailgating facilities, gave many of my fellow wolfpacker’s a taste of the magic of college football. Our results in that sport have varied, but I think enough of us have gotten to enjoy this experience that, well, you see no empty seats for a game against BC after your squad got whipped 37-17 against Southern Miss.

    I say:

Just more “lunatic fans” rising up out of the woodworks. Don’t the people over there in Tar Heel land know their rightful place in the hierarchy and that they don’t belong to even be considered as factors on the football field. That it’s all already been pre-determined, and you can’t have or want more than what you have now right.

It’s a hard learned lesson in reality that can last as long as a decade, but only if handled properly.

Bunting is great! Just ask the other coaches around the ACC, they’ll be more than glad to tell you.

As I said on the other thread, our howls of glee over their suckdom (incidentally, PRECISELY the same howls of derision heard in 2004 AND 2005) are completely pathetic until we actually manage to beat the suckmongers on the gridiron. Given the Akron and Southern Miss results, I’m pencilling in neither the Holes NOR the Py-rats. Are you?

  11. cfpack03 09/26/2006 at 4:47 PM #

I was joking with the quotes, playing off MatSci. I guess it was a little vague but I was pretaining to Roy and K’s quotes about good ole Herb.

Did anyone else see Matt Hayes’ (Sporting News) article from yesterday? He believes BOTH CTC and JB are out on their rears at the end of this season–and coming from a member of the national media, the fact he includes JB is the only surprise there.

He then goes on to say: “Both Carolina jobs are plum positions that will attract big names. Don’t be surprised if one of those names is a Bowden–Terry, that is…”

Wouldn’t it be interesting to have a Bowden in the Triangle–though I would prefer for it to be Jeff, and him be at UNC!

  13. Gene 09/26/2006 at 4:49 PM #

Who cares how badly Buntings doing now. He was 1-3, when we went C.H. 2 years ago and beat us. Last year he lost to Louisville a big big margin, something like 62-20 (don’t remember the exact score) and beat us in Raleigh. He also beat Miami two years ago and BC last year.

Buntings not doing wonders at UNC, but I sure as hell am not writing Carolina off yet, since they’ve been able to beat us, no matter how badly they played in other games.and posted a better conference record than us, the last two seasons, as well.

  14. choppack1 09/26/2006 at 4:51 PM #

CG – Heck no – not taking anything for granted.

Just another thing to add. For me, tailgating w/ scores of my friends at Carter Finley was a distinct and vivid part of the “State experience.” Moreso than for any other events, that’s when we all got together on a regular basis.

Hillsborough Street is a shell of itself, Reynolds is no longer the home of (men’s) basketball. But the tailgate still takes me back to my college days.

  15. cfpack03 09/26/2006 at 4:52 PM #

Hmm, a Bowden royal rumble? I’m sure ESPN, the way they own the NCAA, could figure out a way for all 3 to play each other at the same time. (and fit it neatly into exactly 3 hrs of course).

  16. redfred2 09/26/2006 at 4:55 PM #

I posted this comment (reworded) on Saturday afternoon, back on the thread discussing Duke University’s impending decision as to whether or not they require their professors to spend time with the athletes on the field/court/…..

I knew the crowd over on Franklin Street would be way ahead of the curve on this one, as I predicted earlier. It appears the Tar Heels may have actually suited up, and played the professors instead, down in Death Valley this weekend. What a forward thinking university! Even liberal minded Duke University will never get one over on those guys in powder blue. They’re always way ahead of the game on the more politically correct issues facing our children today!

Start the music, bring out the chairs, the possession of a hot seat is question here.

  17. redfred2 09/26/2006 at 5:07 PM #

For all you guys thinking it is rediculous behavior to talk this way about our neighbor, I would just like to ask why you think it has taken the media so long to air any Amato-like comments regarding Coach Bunting?

You know they wouldn’t do during the recruiting period or right at the start of the season. They had to be slapped off of the perches by an embarrassment in Death Valley before they would utter an unkind word.

  18. Woof Wolf 09/26/2006 at 5:11 PM #

Individual talent – team results for the last four years = underachieving.

  19. Astral Rain 09/26/2006 at 5:25 PM #

While there’s underacheivement in Raleigh, the overall results have been about the same. Where CTC lacks as a coach he compensates for in better recruiting. I think it’s easier to improve as a coach then improve as a recruiter- but I”m not sure on that.

  20. Woof Wolf 09/26/2006 at 6:16 PM #

I hope so. I’m not giving up on him yet, but he needs to start showing some results. I’m not saying we should win or even get to the conference championship game this year, but we have to play better. We should not have lost to Akron or gotten blown out by Southern Miss.

Sports Illustrated has us ranked 65 in it’s power ratings this week. There are seven ACC teams in the top 38 this week. My opinion is that we need to be in the top 35 by the end of the year, or we need to look for someone who may do a better job.

  21. BobLee 09/26/2006 at 6:44 PM #

Chop … thanks for the reasoned replies.

That UNC “almost always” has had BB as a fallback ego-boost is true. Never more evident than when it was NOT there in the Matt Era. the phrase “8-20” still causes nervous tics in most UNCers.

I’m saying John needs to go 2-1 over the next 3 …. Miami, USF, UVa. Our folks will treat USF with the same snooty disdain we did Rutgers … and likely w/ the same results. Look for our idiots to say “USF is sooo bad even Chuckles shut them out” … yes w/ Mario, Manny, McCargo etc.

As for “who will replace Bunting if …” … go back no further than your experience replacing Herb. CALIPARI, BARNES… et al. Our loons will scream the usual suspects … BUTCH DAVIS, Paul Johnson, Terry Bowden, Bob Davies and the OCs and DCs of every Top Ten team from last year. Whoever we get the loonies will NOT be happy because … thats how loonies are. ….. and never forget … WE ARE “THE SLEEPING GIANT” … yawn, burp. …. of the above suspects, Johnson probably has the most “maybe” in his favor.

Sadly, some in the regional media will use loonie ranting as their sources for “breaking news”. How often do you see a loon throw out something beyond bizarre … a columnist on deadline grabs it and prints it … the loonie who made it up sees it in print and assumes someone who actually has a clue was thinking the same thing. That happens more often than you think.

Ned Barnett (Barrett?) w/ the N&O is notorious for repeating board loon ramblings.

John still has time to save himself as, certainly, does Chuck. The next three games will tighten anal sphincters considerably. If Nov 18 is going to “save” either one … they better win 2-3 before then. …. our bunch is in full head exploding mode right now. That level of intense rage is hard to maintain for eight weeks as you guys well know.

Reciting Dickie Baddour’s war crimes 38 times EVERY FREAKIN’ DAY can wear most folks out.

As far as those asking about Terry Bowden…you really do not want him coming in to be your coach. The baggage he is dragging around would immediately make him a target of other school’s fans and the media. Butch Davis may be coming back to the ACC but it would likely be a return to Miami since there is a fast growing alumni group there already making off-the-record contact with him to return to “The U”. If I was going to look for a coaching relacement I would go outside the usual “name coach” search and go after the current Navy coach. (I’m sorry but I cannot remember his name) Also why are we so upset about the media dumping on NCSU? For Heaven’s sake what else is new around here? As long as there is a Carolina they will be number one to the press. The best way to annoy them is having a winning program and ignoring their UNC love fests.

  23. Wolfpack4ever 09/26/2006 at 7:10 PM #

“Of course CTC and Bowden would say he is a great coach. Bowden wants the guaranteed win every year. CTC should relish the chance to win every year, but for some reason we choke this one away.”

With comments like this, it’s now wonder we are called “loonies.” Let’s see, both are calling him a great coach because they want him around? One is beating him, the other is getting his ass handed to him. I need a little explanation as to how that is the same. This is what IMNSHO is called mental masturbation. It’s this sort of shit that gives blogs a bad name.

Chuck’s hype? Should he be saying, “Well son, we sucked last your and to be honest, according to our fans, we won’t win but 6 games — 7 tops — and probably settle for the the Blue Balls Bowl in Boise. Now how about coming on up/down/over to NC State and get your ass thrashed on Saturday and crucified on Sunday. Oh? How come?

(To himself) I didn’t really expect him to come here but heh, I didn’t get the fans excited about winning either did I?

Chuck or any football coach who wants to elevate his program into the Top 10, must first speak his team into existence as a Top 10 contender before they play themselves into that position. Criticizing Chuck for having the gonads to subject himself to inevitalbe ridicule to achieve his lofty goals sounds like something the tarholes might be doing.

Really now, do we want the players reading where Chuck told the loyal WPers behind the players’ backs that he and his staff and really screwed the pooch with Stone, et al, and we didn’t have the chance of a snowball in hell of winning the conference champianship, much less going to a BCS bowl?

Or Chuck saying to Stone, you are benched without a chance because some wolfslackers think you suck. We cite the media for feeding frenzies while we create a lynch mobs calling for Chuck’s and others coaches’ heads.

I think Johnnie Evans speculated that Chuck might bring Stone in if a hail Mary was a last resort. So although we in our infinite wisdom could see that Stone wasn’t going to work out, was it in our best interests to turn the QB roll over to a slightly built young man whose best through is 40 yards.

Do we have to wonder why DE was not recruited out of HS? After it turned out Stone did not develop as was hoped, young DE just might be what the doctor ordered for the West Coast Offense. And apparently this wasn’t as obvious in Spring ball or Pre-season to Tressman as it was to us. (And I thought practices were closed.)

I can’t help but notice the “I-ain’t-taking-my-foot-off-Chuck’s-neck-until-he-wins-big-and-proves-me wr-wr-wr-wr-wr-wrong-because-I-give-big-money-and-I’ve-got-a-right-to attitude some of us are still holding on to. (Notice how hard it is to say the “wr” word?)

  24. westwolf 09/26/2006 at 7:10 PM #

StateRed–I think that CTC’s teams have underachieved compared to the talent that he has brought in. Last year he had THREE defensive linemen taken in the 1st round of the NFL draft and STILL got crushed by Wake Forest…plus Tank Tyler, a stud LB taken in the draft…and still lost to some very inferior teams.

    This year…losing to Akron..at HOME

River’s senior season…barely making a bowl game against Kansas? Come on…

I love CTC, and I hope that he can keep some assistant coaches around long enough to really get things going, but there is no doubt that he has had several inexplicable losses ech season.

  25. GrandWolf 09/26/2006 at 7:27 PM #

Well, I really don’t know WTF goes on in Chapel Hill (and really don’t care to some extent). However, seems to me EweNC has more problems than John Bunting. Furthermore, those problems seem to go “upward” in the Athletic Administration. Specifically, Dick Baddour. Sometimes I think State has problems with Fowler. For all Fowler’s “Jedness”, I’d take him 10-1 over Baddour anyday.

Baddour seems to have done two things in major sports at EweNC. Fire NASCARL and hire Bunting. Given that Roy Williams was probably hand picked by Saint Dean, I do not credit Roy’s hire to Baddour in any way. Roy’s hire would have eventually occured had even if Tuffy the Wolf had been AD at EweNC.

Anyway. I contacted Baddour and let him I thought Bunting was a great hire. Furthermore, I praised Mr. Baddour in his courage in following his professional instinct as opposed to a knee-jerk mob reaction.

Here’s to JB and his long career in Chapel Hill!
