National Preseason Priming Bytes

College Football kicks off TONIGHT with future NC State opponent South Carolina battling Mississippi State (link to preview) on ESPN.

With this said…there are SO MANY preseason articles running all over the internet that it is impossible to read them all. We’re going to cover a few preseason items “Bytes” style today.

* ACC fans will get their first chance to see Boston College (6pm, ESPN2) as the Eagles travel to Central Michigan. Anyone interested in getting a little deeper into this one can jump over to Eagle in Atlanta’s Preview.

* Speaking of television…to help you with your television viewing this weekend, we are very proud of the downloadable television schedule that you can find in this entry. Additionally, this link can serve as a great reference guide for you for the weekend.

* This piece at CBS Sportsline is designed to get you ready for the season. It is a nice primer. Additionally, the N&O’s national football preview has hit the presses and is pretty astute.

* For a little more national pre-season priming, then you can take a look at this entry discussing who can win it all this season and this entry discussing potential sleepers that you should focus some attention.

* Any time that Phil Steele speaks, you should listen.

* Have you seen the University of Texas’ new ‘Godzillatron’ video screen? (Link) I’ve been to about a half dozen games in Austin and have always been impressed with the professional manner in which they choose to administer/use their video board during games; especially when compared to NC State’s embarassing lack of statistics and whoring of every possible second of time for crowd-killing advertisements. A tip of the hat to RAWFS for the work that they did on this.

* With the recent purchase of Jefferson-Pilot Insurance by Lincoln Financial, our beloved JP Sports is officially dead. Everyone on Tobacco Road has fond memories of ‘sailing with the Pilot’ during classic basketball telecasts; but JP’s football coverage always left a lot for want. This article classicly discuss JP’s SEC football telecasts and can easily be applied to JP’s (sometimes painful) ACC productions.

* Relatedly, I remember making a few critical comments of JP’s broadcasts – particularly ‘Doc’ Walker – a few years ago when the original Statefans.com was launched in 2000. It wasn’t long before I received a critical email of my own from JP’s very own Steve Martin. Martin didn’t take too kindly to me not-so-constructive criticism despite the fact that I was obviously speaking more directly about “Doc” than Martin. It will be interesting to see what improvements, if any, Lincoln Financial chooses to make in their future broadcasts.

* This article – “My Football South” – was so good that I had to save it for the right time to share. I know that our very own LSUTigerFan is going to love it.

I leave you with some fun from DeepSouthSports:
(1) Gotta love these Auburn Fotoshops in response to the AU Sociology class debacle. I’m a particularly big fan of the Exxon sign.
(2) Wow! This video is pretty sad…unless you don’t like Ohio State.

Trout and Jeff – You guys have to be at least 30 something to remember that commercial. I can still see that captain driving through the rain. They may have done a mediocre job on football, but basketball was usually pretty durn good.

Looking forward to watching MSU and the Gamecocks tonight.

    Jeff’s closer to 30, I’m closer to 40. 🙂

It’s Lincoln Financial that bought JP – they also named the FB new stadium in Philly.

The mighty Wake Forest, scooping us again. Better just let it go and forget about him.

Question for Lee Fowler, and all of the fans who supported the last regime: Would conceeding the fact that Wake Forest is now in a much better position to improve it’s basketball program than NC State is right now, be a low enough point to consider entering MIND re-hab? Would that be time to possibly realize that the AD hasn’t ever known what in the hell he was doing, and those fans who followed him right along for a decade haven’t ever known what in the hell they were talking about?

    I think so.

    I love it.

Fixed the Franklin/Lincoln Financial debacle! So sorry for the mistake!!

When I think of JP, I think Wake.

I may have to nominate USC/Mississippi State as the worst non-blowout game I’ve ever seen. Just awful.

  13. choppack1 09/01/2006 at 9:34 AM #

Agreed. Mississippi State’s offense was the worst thing I’ve ever seen.

Watching SEC football, FSU and Miami – it seems like the last couple of years the D has been eons ahead of the offense- especially early. I wonder if the OC’s are being too ambitious w/ these QBs. And if you thought our QB play was bad, you would have really been appalled watching MSU’s back-up. He had one good pass all night – and that was dropped!

  14. vtpackfan 09/01/2006 at 9:55 AM #

Man, did’nt you guys thinf these SEC teams were fired up to hit someone? Miss St. always suck on offense, thus the hirinf of an NFL O minded coach. Spurriers offense showed some life of clicking in the second, although not often enough without the gizmo plays, and it should get better for them. That was some great hitting out there IMO, and it disrupted the flow of the game. Great defensive football games are nothing like pitching duels in baseball. They are disturbing to watch at times. Had the Bulldogs starting QB not gotten hurt then the score would have been closer.

  15. primacyone 09/01/2006 at 10:02 AM #

That MSU/USC was awful. It was so bad, I couldn’t stop watching. Same thoughts on the QB situation. Made me excited about the potential of the NCSU offense this year.

Here is an intersted annoucement that relates to the above link of the conversation regarding Chris Wright and Jeff Teague.

    http://wakeforest.scout.com/2/563349.html

I can’t imagine Wake Forest broadcating Teague’s decision if he was not commiting to Wake. I can’t imagine Chris Wright considering Wake if Jeff Teague commits to Wake.

I’m also seeing the Green commitment and a Tracy Smith commitment appears to shaping up as well. I’m starting to think of a possibility that a JJ Hickson visit is already scheduled, but Sidney, being the hush, hush type, and has told JJ not to announce it, etc.

  16. BJD95 09/01/2006 at 10:05 AM #

I thought that the OL play was so bad, it bordered on inhumane (especially MSU’s). Remember that great OL on the MSU team we played in the Peach Bowl? Must seem like a million years ago to Bulldog fans.

  17. Wulfpack 09/01/2006 at 10:19 AM #

Spurrier has to be pleased with the play of his young defense. Granted, MSU’s offense was anemic, especially with a true freshman under center once the starter was pummeled out of the ball game. But the USC defense took that game over and didn’t give an inch. You can bet that Georgia was taking notice. It could be a solid year in Columbia if the O can get on track a little bit.

Greatly looking forward to the App. State game this weekend.

    Primacy,

Just in case you didn’t catch it…Rivals spoke with Smith, and he confirmed as of yesterday (8-31-06) that his 2 leaders remained the same: NCSU and Okie State. This late and vs Okie State is a good position to be in—hopefully Sid can pull it through…

I hope Wake gets Teague to take them out of the Chris Wright sweepstakes. IF (fingers crossed), we could land Wright, that would REALLY get the ball rolling and show Sid’s METTLE on the recruiting trail immediately.

I think Hickson is probably done to Florida, but you never know. A Chris Wright commitment would certainly give us a much better chance. Hopefully, Teague picks Wake, Wright has a great visit and remembers why he committed in the first place and sees the value in committing now and sending some recruiting mojo Smith and Hickson way…

    A couple other thoughts:
    1) That d by USC replaced 10 starters this year!!
    2) Bad signs for QBs – both starting QBs were knocked out of the game for at least a series.
    3) I don’t know if MSU can win ethically w/out a fantastic coach – like the one on the USC sidelines.

  20. ShootingGuard 09/01/2006 at 11:32 AM #

    Chop,

    Following up on your points…

    (1) Shows how bad MSU’s O really is…
    (2) I love SEC football because it is just HARD HITTING…
    (3) No doubt…It seems like so many of the folks around there are lifelong Bama fans with plenty of Auburn fans as well…I saw Bama play at Starkville (Starkville wasn’t near as bad as I had thought it would be), and the place was filled—with Bama fans…

  21. primacyone 09/01/2006 at 3:09 PM #

    Teague to Wake.

    ^MickeyM,

My earlier and off topic comment was refering to ^primacyone’s link at the top of the thread. I should have noted that.
