Lose The Pro Look, Chuck

The post-Rivers mediocrity of Wolfpack football has many causes. Jay Davis wasn’t Philip Rivers and at times wasn’t Tol Avery. The team was often poorly disciplined and poorly coached. An apparent – and hopefully eradicated – “star system,? whose poster child was the insufferably annoying T.A. McClendon, took its toll. And assistants came and went at a rate that made carnies look like stable, long-term employment prospects.

Still, one can point to an overall issue: NC State football seems to require less of an injection of talent than an adjustment in attitude. John Bunting may be a boastful toolbox and all-around no-goodnik in our eyes, but let’s give the guy some credit. He’s regularly beating our (supposedly) more talented, glitzy program by producing teams with a simple, traditional desire to kick our ass every time we meet up. You know, the way Dick Sheridan’s teams used to punk Mack Brown’s spiffy blue chippers with our “inferior? players. It’s as if the two programs have switched places.

Worse, Chuck Amato himself led the new Pimp My Program trend. Amato can be an immensely charismatic guy, but let’s be honest. With the red shoes and sunglasses, Chuck evolved into Hurricane Clown Show last season. A sad but undeniable fact of life is that the difference between winning and losing is also the difference between being an interesting eccentric and a laughingstock.

The clown outfits disappeared as the Pack went into meltdown last season, and Amato gets huge credit for reviving a team then lurching toward historic disaster. But Amato needs to go further. It’s time to get back to basics – the let’s get it done attitude of the Rivers era. And a good way to signal a return to seriousness is: Discard the cheesy, pro-style uniforms and go back to looking like a college football team again.

A minor point, you say? Perhaps. But it’s an immensely symbolic one. Does no one else recall the seriousness, and traditionalism, signaled by ditching the O’Cain uniforms (which were left over from Sheridan anyway) and returning to a solid Block “S? and traditional red and white ? Does no one else agree that in temporal terms if nothing else, things began to unravel at precisely the same time as the traditional uniforms were ditched for the silly “pro-style? togs the team now uses?

Look at this picture. Look who it is. Look at the uniform:

http://graphics.fansonly.com/photos/schools/ncst/sports/m-footbl/auto_action/a-rivers-092703.jpg

Now, this sadly familiar one:

http://graphics.fansonly.com/photos/schools/mifl/galleries/footbl-102304/02-lg.jpg

The older uniforms are the symbol of the renaissance that marked Amato’s earlier years at State. They’re the uniforms in which Notre Dame was beaten – and UNC too, most of the time. Those uniforms said, “We’re serious, traditional, and here to play.? The new uniforms say, “We’re a half-assed version of the Atlanta Falcons.? I can’t imagine wanting to emulate the Falcons in any fashion, let alone sartorial.

Some, reading this, are no doubt claiming I’m making a mountain of a molehill. But seriously, this isn’t Queer Eye For The Football Guy here. Appearances say something. If you doubt me, and you are old enough to remember the great Dallas Cowboys teams of the Seventies, do you remember this picture?

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000BW5C1.01-A2QUBZRFQD7A2Q._AA280_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Or do you remember this one?

The Cowboys whipped everyone on their white uniforms and just as regularly imploded in the blue ones. Any time the Cowboys wore the blue uniforms in the playoffs, people worried – and usually with good reason. It got to the point where they were capitalized: The Blue Uniforms, as in, The Anthrax Virus.

And that makes no intrinsic sense. The team that played in white was the same team that played in blue. But, like I said, appearances mean something. Penn State’s simple blue and white means something, as does the blue and gold of Notre Dame. While the latter may do a “special uniform? thing from time to time (and they usually seem to lose when they do), can you imagine either school getting rid of those uniforms with the goal of resembling, say, the Philadelphia Eagles or the Indianapolis Colts? Of course you can’t.

Lose the pro look, Chuck. Go back to being NC State again. Please.

Going to the current logo and losing that terrible NCS diamond one was a great move.

I agree about the uniforms – simple is better.

  2. graywolf 08/02/2006 at 11:36 AM #

Simplicity is better and always has been, so lose the new uniforms and go back to tradition, which includes having Carolina as our most hated rival.

  3. Texpack 08/02/2006 at 11:52 AM #

Props on the Tol Avery reference. As we used to say from the upperdeck student section, “He could overthrow the government.”

I agree with the suggestion for the unis, but I disagree with the jab at Chuck. I think the majority of state fans loved the red shoes and oakleys at the time. It helped to attract some much needed attention when we were winning.

  5. Cardiff Giant 08/02/2006 at 12:00 PM #

^ The Oakleys and the shoes are two different things. Individually, the sunglasses in particular were no big deal. Even the shoes could be funny by themselves. Put them together and you have a clown outfit.

Moreover, I don’t think the red shoes showed up until 2004, when we were not winning, and disappeared during the 2005 meltdown when we were also losing. Maybe I misremember, though.

I am glad you agree about the uniforms, however. Even if you don’t have a glitz problem with them, they are as tainted by loss as the purple jerseys at Clemson, and should go for that reason.

Texpack – thanks. I considered Darrell Moody, too.

I don’t care if Chuck Amato wears five-inch red high heels on the sidelines, as long as he coaches the team well, and gets them to play to their ability.

As far as the unis themselves, the only thing that really matters is what the player inside them does while they are wearing them.

Other than that I agree — I like the simplified look too. It’s more “football.”

  7. Mike 08/02/2006 at 12:25 PM #

Great comments. However, the unis are here to stay. Why? $$$$$$$. Face it, reality of college sports these days. Look on the bright side, at least we dont look like this

Basic is good for all us tradionalists. Got to love the reference to Dallas blue though. And almost forgot about Tol Avery, thanks for the reference. Tol would throw the screen pass like a Nolan Ryan fastball. To would throw it from the fieldhouse to the hill. Not even close to complete, but sure looked pretty flying through the air.

I liked the analogy to the “pro attitude” (i.e., it’s just another game) and how it has quite possibly hurt us against UNC. I hadn’t thought of it being pretty much the exact flip side of how Sheridan’s lesser heralded talent so tormented Mack Brown’s charges.

Remember back to the home GT game on ABC, when we were 9-0. A very long intro focused solely on the “cult of personality” of Chuck Amato. I truly think this kind of stuff went to his head. We lost that Saturday, and apart from the nice FSU/ND games to end that season, haven’t done much since.

  9. RickJ 08/02/2006 at 1:13 PM #

^BJD95 – As miserable and as costly a day as I can recall for N. C. State. It started with Evtimov wrecking his knee and being lost for the season in the Red/White game before the football game.

We were up on Tech with about 9 minutes to play in the game and they were facing a 3rd and 13 from inside their 20 yard line. Carter-Finley was on fire for the play which ended in a sack of George Godsey at about the 5 yard line. Lo and behold, the field judge had thrown a flag for delay of game that nobody saw or heard. Tech got the play over and converted the 3rd and 18 with the greatest pass Godsey ever threw in his stinking career – a 20 yard out right on the sideline to a double covered receiver. My son still talks the look on my face after that play. For me, this is easily the most costly game of the Amato era.

True, uniforms can’t make up for the lack of performance for the person wearing it, and yes $$$ rules. However, how much have the unis changed for programs such as SoCal, Bama, Auburn, Texas, Nebraska, Michigan, et al, et al over the last 30 years? Not alot, they let performance speak. We used to have a very traditional uniform when Chuck played, home Red jersey 3 stripes on the sleeve, white pants, white helmet, red stripe, block S. With the glasses and shoes, Chuck may be doing a take off on the “white shoe” defense, but it did bring some attention. The difference is playing with discipline. I recall going to Penn State with a chance to leave Beaver Stadium #1 in the country and with an Orange Bowl bid. It didn’t work out, but that year, after an 8-2 season and a Peach Bowl victory over Georgia, much of our future was set in motion . So, we are the Falcons now, lots of talent, can’t quite put it together. I’d like a return to traditional uniforms, but would like a return to discipline first. You can be aggressive and disciplined at the same time. With that, Chuck and the program will be fine. GO PACK!

  11. Cardiac95 08/02/2006 at 1:42 PM #

I could be wrong, but I believe the switch in uniforms happened at the same time Football went from Nike to Addidas (along with all of our other programs). I believe the last Nike year was the Gator Bowl season.

  12. 94wolfpack 08/02/2006 at 2:43 PM #

C’mon do you really think the way they look affects their performance? If it does then I want a refund cause i didn’t pay to watch women play football. Is this a football discussion or a fashion show? Must be a SLOW day in sports.

  13. Cardiff Giant 08/02/2006 at 2:47 PM #

“Is this a football discussion or a fashion show? Must be a SLOW day in sports.”

Given this and your additional comments, I can’t say I’m shocked that you missed the point – as you clearly did.

Personally, I can’t put a whole lot of stock in an article all about the importance of uniform colors that thinks Penn State wears “black and white.”

“Does no one else agree that in temporal terms if nothing else, things began to unravel at precisely the same time as the traditional uniforms were ditched for the silly “pro-styleâ€? togs the team now uses?”

No, I don’t agree at all. The answer to that is simply the 2nd word in the article: “post-Rivers”

As far as the Cowboys go, they wear white at home while most teams wear their colored jerseys at home. So the only time the Boys wear the blue jerseys is against another team that also wears white at home. The fact that they seemed to lose a lot in the blue back in the day probably had less to do with the color of their jerseys and more to do with playing on the road at Miami or Washington.

Can I tell you about pathetic? Up here in remote PA, before the dawn of the dish in my neighborhood, I took this gorgeous girl I had just met to a sports bar to watch the Georgia Tech game. With about 9 minutes left she started to bug me about leaving so we wouldn’t be late for the movie. Then came that 3rd down penalty, then we left with about 4 minutes left. I sat in the movie theater parking lot on a hill picking up WPTF fading in and out, slumping over the steering wheel, silent, straining to hear anything hopeful Johnny Evans might say. Then she said, “Aren’t you overreacting a little to a football game?” I held my tongue, movie was bad (It was French imagine that), never heard from her again.

  16. wolfpack80 08/02/2006 at 3:42 PM #

Someone else already mentioned it, but the uniforms changed when we switched from Nike to Adidas. I liked the uniforms of the Rivers era, but also like the new ones. As long as we win I couldn’t care less. Although, I do dislike the red on red home uniforms but like the white on white away.

  17. Cardiff Giant 08/02/2006 at 3:52 PM #

“Personally, I can’t put a whole lot of stock in an article all about the importance of uniform colors that thinks Penn State wears “black and white.â€?

I don’t. Just a brain fart on my part. Thanks for pointing it out, even if you did so in sort of an unpleasant fashion.

“No, I don’t agree at all. The answer to that is simply the 2nd word in the article: “post-Riversâ€?”

Do you know what “in temporal terms” means? For second point, was it Philip Rivers who kept the team from having all those dumb penalties? He must really BE Superman.

“As far as the Cowboys go, they wear white at home while most teams wear their colored jerseys at home. So the only time the Boys wear the blue jerseys is against another team that also wears white at home. The fact that they seemed to lose a lot in the blue back in the day probably had less to do with the color of their jerseys and more to do with playing on the road at Miami or Washington.”

Were you alive, and of viewing age, in the Seventies? Are you seriously denying the Blue Jersey Jinx?

    From Wikipedia:

Throughout the years, the Cowboys’ blue jerseys have been popularly viewed to be “jinxed” due to the coincidence that they always seem to lose when they wore them. Most of the time, Dallas will wear their blue jerseys when they visit Miami; Washington; or one of the handful of teams, such as the Houston Texans or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, that traditionally wear their white jerseys at home during the first half of the season due to the hot subtropical climates in their respective cities. But on some occasions, opposing teams will purposely wear their white jerseys at home to try and jinx the Cowboys.

I’m sure we ain’t changing back to the old uniforms now, but I agree with the article. The uniforms are just a symptom of “Chuck-Em” football – all flash and no bang. Go back to the old uniforms, take off the clown shoes, get a pair of plain Ray-Bans (and you don’t have to wear them at night), but most importantly go back to coaching football Chuck. This is your chance to prove to many of us that you really know what the hell you are doing, and you aren’t just a bad joke that has been told too many times. The media says your team pretty much is gonna suck by where they picked you in the conference, but you’ve got a decent amount of talent and the schedule isn’t as hard as it could be. Show us that it wasn’t all just the “refuse to lose” leadership from Rivers that made us think we were building a serious program a few years ago. To a lot of us, this is the season where we see if you really are a college football coach. Remember when people were talking that you might end up being Paterno’s replacement? Well thay ain’t talking about that anymore are they?

  19. Cardiff Giant 08/02/2006 at 4:08 PM #

^ This is a very good post. Everyone, but everyone, IIRC, picked the Pack to absolutely stink in 2000. Remember after the Arkansas State game? Hell, remember halftime at the Indiana game? We were all shaking our heads and saying, “same old, same old.” Just a couple of weeks later we were 4-0 and off to our best start since, I believe, 1992.

Obviously a huge part of that – the “refuse to lose” mentality – was Philip. But it wasn’t just him. It was from Amato on down (except of course in games against Maryland). Somewhere along the way that drive largely disappeared from this program. Changing the uniforms would be a symbolic but important gesture toward righting the ship.

  20. joe 08/02/2006 at 4:15 PM #

GT and LSU are the only 2 college teams that have permission from the NCAA to wear white at home. Before I read that I didn’t know the NCAA required dark jerseys at home.

  21. Mr O 08/02/2006 at 4:47 PM #

Personally, I can’t think of anything more irrelevant than our uniforms, our coaching staffs shoes and our head coach’s glasses.

  22. WV Wolf 08/02/2006 at 5:09 PM #

I agree completely with Mr. O.

The New England Patriots changed jerseys and won Super Bowls. The 92-93 State basketball team wore practially the same jerseys as the 74 and 83 champs and won 8 games all year. You can find examples both ways all day. As Mr. O said, it’s irrelevant.

The uniform change was about switching to adidias. That’s it. Nothing else to it.

Chuck starting wearing the red shoes in honor of the basketball team that wore the same shoes in the ACC and NCAA tourneys. You think he’d be praised for having some school spirit. I never understood how Herb was too boring but yet Chuck was too flashy.

And Mr. Giant, as far as the Cowboys go I never denied the “jinx”, I was merely pointing out that there was a reason for the “jinx” and the color of the uniforms didn’t have a thing to do with it. It was more about the circumstances in which the jerseys are worn. Your Wikipedia quote seems to back me up on that. If you want to play “in temporal terms” we may as wear tear down the Vaughan Towers. Our big flashy pro-style press box wasn’t around in the big return to glory…

  23. El Scrotcho 08/02/2006 at 5:28 PM #

Leadership and the appropriate attitude can come from a lot of places – and one could argue that the uniform and the coaches attire is one possible source.

I happen to think the starting QB is infinitely more responsible for instilling the leadership and attitude. And those qualities left the building with our last competent QB.

I appreciate the point made by the author, but the relative impact of the QB versus the uniform is just nowhere near the same. Do you honestly believe that the outcome of any game played in the last two years would be different if our players or coaches were dressed differently? I don’t.

I don’t quite understand why folks feel the need to lay the blame elsewhere, when the answer is so obviously staring us all in the face. Our QB play has absolutely sucked – and because of it we lost.

  24. whitefang 08/02/2006 at 5:53 PM #

Maybe the problem is the QB play. Perhaps its the stupid penalties. It could be the turnovers. The constant coaching staff changes, anyone? Lack of team discipline? Or more likely all of the above. But as a wise boss I had years ago told me he put me in charge of one of his plants – “…if lightning strikes the factory, it sure ain’t your fault, but it damn sure is your responsibility.” Well all these things may not be Chuck’s fault, but they are damn sure his responsibility, and the uniforms, and the shoes, and the sunglasses have become a lightning rod.

  25. packpigskinfan23 08/02/2006 at 6:31 PM #

I dont care about the look of the team. Sure I would like the old unis…. but what I dont like is the flashyness of Amato himself… sure it can be seen as school spirit…. but it can also cause someone to respect him less. and that is the last thing a coach needs from a team…. especially a mediocore one.
