Amato Justified in Recent Media Frustration

I have iTunes set up on my computer to download podcasts of which I am interested. One of my favorite podcasts is 850 The Buzz / 620 The Bull’s daily dose of the best interviews and conversations on their stations in a given day. These podcasts usually run anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour in length.

I don’t know if I need to do something to change my settings or make some other adjustment…but, I have not received a podcast download from 850 since July 25th. Does anyone our there have any insight or similar experiences?

One thing that I therefore missed was David Glenn’s interview of NC State Head Football Coach, Chuck Amato on Saturday. Glenn discusses the interview in this blog entry that is worth checking out. At the beginning of the interview, Coach answered a direct question from DG as follows:

“We have been to five bowls in six years, and our record is 4-1…The other four schools have been to five bowls combined in that same time frame, and their record is 1-4. That’s a fact. The most number of wins at the other four schools in the last six years is 30, and that’s an average of five a year. We’ve won 46, and that’s two shy of eight (victories) a year. I could go on and on. …

“Somebody told me down in Jacksonville, Fla., that I am the fourth-ranked coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference history in the number of wins after six years. Where we came from, and where we’re at? You write the story! I mean, some people won’t. You write the story. Write the things that are going on. Obviously, we know what we’re doing in recruiting. (Sometimes) we’re recruiting too good, because we have an underclassman (Mario Williams) go out and be the No. 1 player picked in America. It goes on and on and on and on.

I know that Coach Amato comes across as a little defensively aggressive in most of his interviews; and, I know that it rubs a lot of people the wrong way. It certainly doesn’t provide Coach any favors with media coverage when things aren’t going his way. However, I can understand Coach’s general frustration and don’t blame him for his mood with the media as of late.

After all…the media’s inaccuracies and inability focus on the truth are starting to have a negative impact on the NC State program as it is various members of the media – at a level that is infinitely more intense than Wolfpack fans – that have insisted on writing articles about Coach Amato being “on the hotseat” while simultaneously (inaccurately) criticizing Amato for foolish reasons.

Think about this for a moment.

There is little to no doubt that John Bunting will be fired as UNC-CH’s football coach after this season if he turns in a performance that is just an average year for him. How much publicity is this topic getting? While Chuck Amato has succeeded in becoming one of the most successful football coaches in NC State history and has succeeded in elevating our program far above all other programs in the area, the media has decided to swarm like (uneducated) vultures on CTC’s job security.

The result? UNC-CH is experiencing one of the best recruiting classes in their history while NC State is experiencing our second slight downturn in a row from the standards of CTC’s first four recruiting classes.

Reality check…NC State’s program has quickly become an NFL factory while UNC’s has experienced more player turnover and attrition than is close to explicable. The success that Chuck Amato has generated at NC State dwarfs the overall success of what John Bunting has generated at Carolina in only one fewer season.

Yet, the media makes a huge deal of our successful coach being on “the hotseat” while Carolina’s unsuccessful coach gets NO public pressure or scrutiny and thereby allowing him to mislead recruits into thinking that his job is safe. Wouldn’t you be a little ticked at the idiocy and blatant disregard for reality?

850 Interview
A poster on Pack Pride’s message board shared a fantastic summary of Glenn’s entire interview with Amato. The following is that report:

“DG started with a state of the program question at year 7. Coach replied with the facts:

When he came here the program was being compared to the other programs in the state of NC so where are we today. State is the only team to go to 5 bowls in the last 6 years, the other 4 teams have been to 5 bowls collectively. We are 4-1, those 4 are 1-4. We have 46 wins in 6 years or almost 8 wins/season average. The other 4 have 30 wins collectively. He remarked he hears about other stats from other people, but does not pay much attention to them. We have only been beaten badly twice in 6 years, but have beaten the perennial power in the league, FSU, 3 of 5. Our best game last year was against VT, but mistakes made the difference. He is proud he brought high expectations to the program and DG responded that is what makes it fun. Are we where Coach wants us to be, no, but we are getting there.

He never referenced UNC@CH by name or inference.

He repeated the story of how we could have competed for a NC the year we had the #1 defense in the country if that could have been Rivers redshirt senior season.

Are we a team that can compete nationally or a team with holes? We are team with holes. Four years ago the staff thought they would be very good this year because of the strength of the senior class (Mario, Tank, Tulloch) and a solid defensive backfield with only Hudson gone along with a highly recruited redshirt Jr at QB (Stone) and talent across the line, but as always every thing changes. So we will see how the kids fill the holes.

He is excited about the OL. There was chemistry formed in the spring. Don’t forget Holt played most of the game at VT 2 years ago at RT and we won.

Defensively, Willie Young is good and has good speed off the edge, but he has not played a college game yet. Is he Manny, no Manny was the best athlete he ever coached including Deion, but don’t forget the first time Manny played with his hand on the ground was his Jr year. Ray Brooks played great 2 seasons ago, but is rusty so we’ll see how he does. Again referenced how Young and others are similar to Mario and Manny during their first seasons in size and skills.

LB question with reference to Ray Michael playing and the holes to fill. Talked alot about Lowery and how Lowery had gotten a lot of PT the last 2 seasons as Hoyte was usually hurt the tail end of both seasons.

There were some comments about the running backs and playing freshmen, but I must have gottend distracted because I don’t remember his commments much other than how it took them 6 games last year to get smart enough to play Andre.

DG talked about how the common story on the recruiting trail is how family oriented the State program is. The recruits think is is cool they can call him Chuck. He commented the reference to family is what it is all about as players and coaches learned to work together. He is very proud of this family reputation he had built into the program. He has assigned seats for players during meetings with Seniors in front going to Freshmen in the back. Although this helps with attendance record keeping, it is also to help the players get to know each other daily. The coaches eat in the dining hall with the players to create a bond.

Jokingly he said you don’t call Coach Bowden by “Bobby”, but you do call Coach Paterno by “Joe”. Paterno is also Italian. He has told the players his Mom calls him Charles, but it is okay for them to call him Chuck in private, but if in public in front of others, they should call him Coach because people may view calling him Chuck as disrespectful.

DG finished with the question about his attire for the coming season. Coach said he will wear what people give him and doesn’t think much about it and why don’t the media comment on how other coaches dress on the sideline. However, he commented how it is about marketing. He has had people come up to him and say I know you from somewhere. So Coach will put on the shades and they respond, “oh yeah you the coach of NC STATE”. I took it he knows the comments about the shades and the shoes, but he views it as good PR and market recognition.”

Also, from what I’ve read ND bends the rules moreso than any school in the upper echelon group. Hard to find a dozen guys that are 6-5 275lbs that run a 4.7 forty and score 1300 on the SAT. And for the group of sxhools at the top academically that’s what they would need to compete with the average football program today.

class of 74 – You’re kind of making my point referencing the Domers and their academics. While I wouldn’t say that academically we are in that class – w/ this new requirement, that may be the de facto result.

  3. packbackr04 08/08/2006 at 2:40 PM #

Nothing like rolling a bunch of killy kats out on the field that can barely read!

  4. choppack1 08/08/2006 at 2:47 PM #

packbackr – That’s not accurate. The problem is that a lot of these kids simply don’t have access to the same academic resources necessary to qualify for NC State or UNC or even Charlotte or App going forward. Most of these kids can read – and have to meet NCAA minimum requirements. Basically, this hurdle will make it very difficult for us to compete against Clemson, VaTech, Miami and FSU -and these schools already have other built in advantages.

Choppack1 – You make a great point. The extra science and the required foreign language could be a deal killer for some at the smaller rural school. There are a lot of 1-A and 2-A schools that only have one biology teacher and one chemistry teacher. To get three sciences you have to take take and advanced (AP) biology or an advanced (AP) chemistry class. Okay for some, a stretch and tough chore for most others. A lot of these schools only offer a single foreign language teacher teaching two levels. What if that teacher didn’t think highly of you and your desires to play.

However, I don’t think this is the reason we lost to UNC the last two years – do you?

  6. TampaPack 08/08/2006 at 2:59 PM #

Academic excuses are simply that – exceuses. Everyone has these problems – down here in Florida, even UM, UF, and FSU has kids that didn’t qualify to enroll. I am sure you will find the same story at most, if not all D-1 schools.

Aren’t the graduation requirements for NC public schools the same as the minimum admission requirements for NC public univeristies? IIRC they were when I was a student (early – mid 90s). If so, then all kids that go to a public school would be eligible. If so, and the kid graduates, they should be eligible to play in state or out of state, taking away the “advantage” of out of state schools. I understand that out of state students may or may not meet our standards, but the instate kids should, right?

“I have iTunes set up on my computer to download podcasts of which I am interested. ”

    “of which I am interested”

I have finally deduced the true identify of “Jeff” and “SFN”. Charles (or is it Mr. Shackleford?), it is good to see you are still around.

  8. VaWolf82 08/08/2006 at 3:20 PM #

If you LOOK for an excuse often you will conveniently find one, that’s my point.

Valid point. But how many FB players in your high school took four years of math and three years of science? How many FB players outside of NC meet these requirements? We’ve all seen how Fowler can make up excuses out of thin air….and these requirements are far stiffer than just air.

The point is not that the academic requirements are an excuse for a 4-8 year. But they have probably had a big impact on recruiting last year and this year. Luckily for both UNC and State, the NC recruiting depth is far deeper than normal this year….which will hopefully mitigate the damage.

Starting in 2008, the NCAA defined “Core Classes” changes and brings the NCAA requirements closer to the UNC system req’ts. We’ll see how this plays out over the next several years.

^ I am confused? I wrote the article and it is under my name.

I didn’t think it was much of a secret that ALL of the authors on our team have access and use “StatefansNation” when we are editing and monitoring the site.

  11. TampaPack 08/08/2006 at 3:34 PM #

VaWolf – I agree with what you were saying. I wasn’t trying to bring controversy to the discussion. Just pointing out that, like you said, if you look for an excuse anyone can find one. Thanks for finding the information about the schools. I guess since I went to a “college prep” high school all of the admissions requirments met with the graduation requirements, but not the same for all schools.

  12. choppack1 08/08/2006 at 3:55 PM #

“However, I don’t think this is the reason we lost to UNC the last two years – do you?”

Definitely not – we were outhustled, out-executed and out-coached – in both games.

TampaPack – I agree that the academic requirements aren’t the excuse for our stumbling blocks the last 3 years – but they are yet another hurdle we have to clear that those who are competing for even the top prize in the same conference don’t have to clear.

So – does this impact us against Big 4 competition – not too badly. Does it negatively impact us competing for the ACC crown – you betcha.

Many good points have been brought up here today. Our new improved standards in my opinion do not disadvantage us that much nor do they put us in the upper tier of the Vandy’s, Duke’s and Stanford’s of the college world.

The head coach is the single biggest factor in the success of a program period. And for that guy to succeed he must have the support of the institution he’s working. Why did Steve Spurrier win at Duke? Why did Monte Kiffin and Tom Reed not win here?

  14. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 08/08/2006 at 4:24 PM #

Monte Kiffin had killer schedules put together by Lou and Bo. Kiffin had 2 ok years and one bad one. Talking about the best coach in NC State history it is clear the Kiffin has turned out to be the best coach since leaving State but not when he was a young buck in Raleigh. Maybe the biggest mistake in NC State football history to let him go. Many consider him to be one of the best defensive coaches in NFL history. Tom Reed was an idiot.

  15. VaWolf82 08/08/2006 at 4:42 PM #

Two completely different skill sets between college head coach and an NFL assistant. If you can’t recruit, you won’t ever be a successful college coach. I’m not convinced Kiffin would have ever cleared that first hurdle.

  16. choppack1 08/08/2006 at 4:48 PM #

I’m a little worried our standards will be closer to the Vandy’s, Duke’s and Stanford’s of the world than they will to the FSUs, UTs (both) and UGa’s of the world.

I do think that the HC is a huge factor, but what do you think Spurrier could do at Duke today? He won the ACC before FSU and while Clemson was a shell of their former selves. Don’t get me wrong – it was quite an accomplishment at the time, but it’s kind of like Rutgers or UConn winning the Big East conference title. You’re winning a title in clearly the worst “power” conference in the country. (As a matter of fact, I think that at that time the ACC didn’t have a seat at the table for the good New Year’s Day Bowls.)

I think the evidence will speak for itself. First off – Amato and Bunting can’t use this as an excuse for the last few years, this year or even next year. Secondly, if Amato continues to lose to UNC and Wake, he can’t say he can’t compete because of this rule. If I see we’re beating those guys, but simply can’t compete w/ the Clemson’s, FSU’s and Miami’s of the conference, I’ll cut Amato plenty of slack.

  17. class of 74 08/08/2006 at 5:25 PM #

I think after seven seasons if your coach is hovering around 6-6 or 7-5 do not concern yourself with making any future New Years Day bowl travel plans anytime soon. My greatest fear is we have gotten stuck on mediocre and will remain that way for years to come. Bottomline, and I hope he proves me dead wrong, we have a peter principle example as our coach. He was a good DC but not quite a good HC.

  18. whitefang 08/08/2006 at 5:53 PM #

As far as admissions standards I think we, as part of the UNC system are at a DEFINITE disadvantage to all our sports programs. As we work on one of my son’s senior schedule we have become very well versed in the different admissions requirements. For example the admissions requirements for UVa (which is perennially ranked as the #1 or #2 best public school in the country and hard as hell to get in as a REGULAR student) does not have the rigid science requirements that the UNC system has. Their requirements are pretty open-ended and in fact say, “We fully understand that students’ course selection may be affected by circumstances that are beyond their control”. And you can certainly graduate from an in-state high school, AND be in top of your class, and not qualify for UNC system schools.

  19. VaWolf82 08/08/2006 at 6:18 PM #

we have a peter principle example as our coach. He was a good DC but not quite a good HC.

This may turn out to be the case, but I’m not convinced. Regardless of what any coach says, the QB position is the most important position on the field….and State’s haven’t lived up to expectations over the last two years.

I don’t get caught up with alot of what ifs…but when I see that State has ACC quality players all over the field…then I’m willing to be patient to see what Trestman can do with the QB’s…and especially the ones he recruited. If FSU couldn’t overcome Chris Rix, then there is no way to expect State to be competitive at the top of the conference without a productive QB.

  20. redfred2 08/08/2006 at 6:24 PM #

I have trouble coming to grips with the two or three tier affect that the NC systems standards impose just within the ACC alone, much less the nation. It’s a self imposed limitation with no one to blame, but it’s not exactly in comparison. If academic requirements, which ultimately end up being athletic requirements also, are so varying within the conference it seems to me that the different tiers and standard levels of competiton will be almost inherent from here on out. Some North Carolina program may rise up out of the crowd on occasion, but staying there will is an impossibility.

  21. redfred2 08/08/2006 at 6:27 PM #

^ left out words and typo’s abound, but you get the point.

  22. class of 74 08/09/2006 at 9:04 AM #

Coach Amato may prove me wrong and I do wish him well but again I believe history is a great teacher. Our history in football is not one of greatness but one of mediocrity at best. Initially I thought Amato might be just the man that could bring us to a top 20 type of program but now I’m not so sure.

I totally agree that a QB’s performance is the most important piece to your offense and if you don’t put up points it sure makes winning difficult. But when
the greatest QB in the school’s history can only get us to the Gator Bowl one time and fourth place is your best finish, well combine that with our history and it leads guys like me to wonder if we can be a “football school”.

You know, I think any true Amato supporter would need to buy these used red shoes to wear to the games this fall! Besides, you don’t want some guy names “TARHEELS” to get them do you?!

Sorry, they show on Gopack at the bottom of the football page. Chuck’s used red shoes from last year. This stuff makes me wonder about the people running our promotions department (like some Wpker wants to remember the 1st half of last season)! Those shoes need to be put in the bottom of a latrine at BSA Camp Barnhardt not auctioned off to some tarheel fan!

  25. highstick 08/10/2006 at 3:36 PM #

It’s real simple Chuck. Beat the Tarholes and go to a bowl game! Just beat the freakin’ Tarholes and keep your darned linemen from lining up offsides!
