2006-07 Basketball Schedule Released

Here’s the link.

Of the 12 OOC games, you have 4 games against legitimate, major conference opponents (2005-06 Sagarin rankings in parentheses) – home vs. Michigan (32) and Alabama (40), away vs. West Virginia (18) and Cincy (33). That’s not too shabby, although one has to figure that West Virginia and Cincy will be appreciably worse in 2006-07. Then again, so will NC State. There is also a home game against UNC-Wilmington (42), which should be both interesting and potentially competitive. So, that’s 5 in the “good” category.

There are 2 other games against teams in the 100s – Delaware State (173) and Valparaiso (176). Of the 2, I would expect Valpo to be the more interesting opponent, given their history as a periodic mid-major “upstart.” I like playing a few games like that, since mid-majors can present a better challenge than cupcakes, while still likely resulting in a W. I am still intrigued by the idea of 3 rolling “2 for 1” series against quality mid-majors, but this is a decent start.

Last, here come the 5 pure cupcakes, all in the 200s (and frankly, Delaware State likely will belong in this category at season’s end) – Mount St. Mary’s (253), Wofford (259), Gardner-Webb (260), UNC-Greensboro (270), and bringing up the absolute rear, East Carolina (285). I guess Uncle Jed just can’t get enough of kissing the rear ends of the riot-prone folks from Greenville. We’ve also heard (to date, unsubstantiated) whispers that Fowler might have also agreed on a future freaking road game against the worst team on our schedule. That would be, frankly, the stupidest thing he has ever done, and that’s really saying something. The cupcakes on this list may be a little too sweet for my liking, as 5 teams deep into the 200s will likely drag down the non-conference SOS.

For those of you that like riots, ECU comes into town on December 28. At least you will have the holiday season as a legitimate excuse not to go. Fowler seems intent on turning our stadium and arena purple as often as possible, for no logical reason.

As far as the ACC slate goes, we don’t luck out with the weaklings – only 1 date with Miami. So, we will play the bullies (UNC, Duke) and the plankton (Miami, Wake) 3 times each – a truly balanced schedule. The Pack opens with games @UVA, home vs. BC and Clemson, then @Wake. All of these games are winnable, and if we are going to have a decent season, a 2-2 start seems absolutely essential. We get Duke and UNC in the next quadrant, so we don’t want to try playing catch-up in that stretch.

Strangely enough, we close the season at Maryland. Why, I have no idea. I guess nobody’s traditions are important other than those of UNC and Duke.

talking junk to freinds is a gain to me….

and besides, ECUvsState in Basketball makes much more sence to me than Statevsany other crappy out of state team..

The reason State fans hate Carolina fans is because Carolina fans act like arrogant jerks. So try to keep that in mind when you guys talk about playing the ECU’s, UNCW’s, and UNCG’s of the world.

There is absolutely NO REASON why State fans should be opposed to playing in Greenville. #1 It builds a rivalry between two local schools, #2 State will win 99 out of 100 games no matter where they are played, #3 If anything it allows State fans to travel easily to a Wolfpack road game, #4 it’s good for the local economies.

Playing in Greenville, Wilmington, Greensboro, and Charlotte is something each of the ACC “Big Four” should be doing every 2 years.

^ But NOBODY would agree to do it other than NC State/Lee Fowler. Playing in Greenville is great for ECU, and does NOTHING for us. ECU doesn’t even qualify as a mid-major – they are a low major, and a bad one at that. It’s pretty good experience to play a solid mid-major like Valpo on the road once in awhile. That’s innovative. At ECU? That’s just stupid. UNC-W is far more accomplished than ECU, and there is ZERO indication that we’d play in their arena.

Exactly why should we strive to have a “rivalry” with a bottom feeder program? That would be outright pitiful on our part.

gregb: why isnt ECU traveling to App State to play the Mountaineers in football? That would build a rivarly between 2 in-state schools, ECU should win 99 out of 100 games no matter where they are played, and it would allow the ECU fans an easy travel to a road game, and would be great for the local economies. Playing in Boone is something ECU should be doing at least once every 2-4 years.

Your argument contradicts itself. If RPI and schedule strength is your primary concern, then winning in Greenville would be better for the Pack’s RPI than beating ECU in Raleigh.

Fowler would NEVER schedule a game at Wilmington. The reason… Wilmington could actually win. That’s why Fowler makes the effort with ECU rather than UNCW.

Trout: I think ECU is actually pretty good about scheduling local teams in Football. WVa, Virginia, Navy, and State are all within driving distance to Greenville. There are also games scheduled for future dates with UNC and Va. Tech on ECU’s schedule. Past games have included Duke and Wake Forest. If your point is to prove that ECU does not schedule local teams for their games, perhaps I should have you look at ECU’s basketball schedule last year: UNCW, Old Dominion, A&T, Greensboro, Gardner-Webb, Western Carolina, and Wofford. I hope this dispels your theory. I love State and I love ECU, I think it’s a great thing that they are playing. It’s a shame you feel otherwise.

I think MD/NCSU is a more compelling final matchup than WF/NCSU.

WF has been a nice tradition over the past few years but the MD game is usually overshadowed by super bowl weekend. This matchup has carried plenty of drama over the past decade.

SFN: It is not about “Wake’s tradition”…it is about the tradition of NC State playing Wake Forest (and Virginia playing Maryland) to end each season.

No, my theory is that ECU wont travel to App State or WCU in football. Why not? My theory is that ECU has nothing to gain. WVU, Navy, State, VT all HELP ECU by filling the stadium, something ECU cant seem to do own its own. NC State can fill Carter Finley no matter whom the opponent. I’ve got no problem playing ECU. I enjoy the games. I dont see much a benefit for NC State to travel to Greenville though. Seriously, any matchup between ECU and NC State favors ECU much, much more than NC State. What does NC State gain by traveling to ECU, other than it allows some of our fans to make the trip.

App State and WCU are Division I-AA so I think it’s like comparing apples and oranges. C-USA teams have to schedule all I-A teams because their conference schedule isn’t as competitive.

I have a feeling State will be thankful for the easy win when it’s all done and over with.

Trout-I am not for State going to ECU in basketball at all…. but as far as football goes, what do we get out of it? 1)well, I am actully closer to Greenville than Raleigh… so thats a plus for me and a bunch of other NCSU fans… 2)Our football program gets a chance to play in front of a VERY hostile environment, yet it should be an somewhat easy win. thats is great for the team…. it gets them prepared to go to Florida State, VT, Carolina, and so on….. if you really believe that ECU’s stadium could not be filled with just purple for a NCSU/ECU game, your out of your mind. Those tickets would not be easy to get. they are falling in love with their football program again…

ppsf23 – You’re right. ECU could sell out to ECU’s fans when they play the Pack. Of course, they can’t/won’t/don’t do it for their in conference games.

If ECU has a good season, I’m sure there attendance will be solid trumping Duke and Wakes.

Call Gardner-Webb a cupcake all you want, but they played the Tarholes and only lost by was it 3 or was it 4…in Chapel Hill at the Dean Dome to start the season last year. As a matter of fact…I am much more afraid of them than Valpo or Deleware State. At least the guys at Gardner-Webb are out there trying to prove that they were slighted by NCSU when we chose not to recruit them and “let them get away to the little in-state school” in Boiling Springs, NC.

I asked this somewhere else, but trying to get an answer. Why is State only playing 12 OOC games? Every other team in the conference plays 13 (with no exempt tourney) to 15 (with exempt tourney). The rules were changed this year to allow a few more OOC games …

  14. gregb 08/21/2006 at 3:34 PM #

nycfan: With higher gas prices, coupled with the look of the schedule, I’ll bet State is making attempt to lower their travel budget.
