Suiter: State Fans Care More About Football Than Tarheels

Tom Suiter threw up a summertime blog entry at WRAL.com this afternoon. (Link)

There is nothing in it of much note, but we liked this (obvious) comment very much:

Is it me or does State care more about football than Carolina?

Very interesting question. Does Tom refer to “fans” or “the institution” or a combination of both? If “fans” is he comparing lunatic fringes or mainstream?
Lunatic fringes are virtually identical. They are what they are, bless their hearts.
“Mainstream fans” I would say UNC fans do exert a bit more “passion” for BB now that it is back on track.
If God had a devilish sense of humor, He might give State a juggernaut FB program to match UNC BB power … and let there be endless debate over which sport is more “important”. A “chicken or egg” argument til the cows come home. oops, that was NOT meant as a “farm animal gig”.

Tarhole fans only support a sure thing and football, with rare exceptions, has not been a sure thing for quite awhile.

  4. Kingfish76 07/17/2006 at 7:06 AM #

The tarholers only get excited when their teams are winning and contending.

  5. vtpackfan 07/17/2006 at 8:34 AM #

The media can “expertly” critique the differences between the sports teams. I think we all know that comparing fanbases is like apples and oranges. Lets just pray we’re the ones throwing oranges on the field first someday (preferbly over the team walking off dejected in their powder blue suits).

Classof74 and Kingfish76 hit the nail on the head!

Tarholes only care when they’re winning. When the season goes in the tank (Dougherty era) or they make an unexpected early exit from the tourney, they simply pretend they were never interested in the first place.

Fickle fanbase with the typical wine and cheese response.

thanks for proving our point bob…

I would say UNC fans do exert a bit more “passion for BB NOW THAT ITS BACK ON TRACK.

I don’t know about a juggernaut, but we’ve had about the best reasonally imaginable opportunities over recent years to separate ourselves from the boys in powder blue on the gridiron. The door is slowly being closed on those advantages as we speak.

Carolina fans once were synonymous with the Dallas Cowboy fan back when both were winning. Should the Panthers win the superbowl, Tarheel fans will be the first to proclaim them as “their team,” and then say they have been with them all along. They will be professing their loyalty all over the place, only well after the fact, as usual.

When Dean had a bad start to the season one year near the end of his career some Heels were calling for his head.

My father-in-law never attended, but is a die hard UNC fan, and he is still complaining about last season. What more can you say.

  12. redfred2 07/17/2006 at 5:43 PM #

I just thought about my dear old dad-in-law since that last post of mine. Although I think he is way off his rocker for complaining about the heels accomplishments of last season, he has been programmed over the years to expect wins every time they play the game. That wasn’t a realistic hope for UNC last season, but thinking just like his must be prevalent throughout UNC’s chain of command. That’s why he and so many others pull for them each basketball season, and that is what will get them right back on top again.

I may consider him a spoiled rotten fan for his thinking, but it goes without saying, that if the those at the top of the food chain and making the decisions aren’t thinking at least somewhat like what most would consider as the “lunatic fringe” of the fan base, the long term success of any athletic program is not a real possibility.

When I hear UNCers describe their version of “a typical State fan” it is never remotely similar to the many good friends I have who are “State fans”.
Of course my State fan friends don’t use phrases like “ALL Tar Holes are so and so and such and such ….”
I guess it all depends on the circles one travels in … huh?

And … as for Lunatic Fringers, there isn’t one IQ point worth of difference in any of them regardless of affiliation. Scoop’em ALL up in a gunny sack and drop’em in a trash compactor … and press “Smash”.

As a confirmed member of the “Soaring Sow” lunatic fringe, I take offense at that sentiment BLS. For historical relevance, the Revolutionary Patriots were in the Lunatic Fringe (far more colonists wnated to appease England than fight) what if they were slaves to conventional wisdom and afraid to challenge status quo? For my part, I wouldn’t choose any other mindset.
Expect greatness and step on toes if you must, all within the rules of course.

Winning a game or two against Carolina every once a in a while would probably lessen that animosity, we’ll find out shortly. If you look around you’ll see that Carolina has by far the biggest bunch of “lunatic fringers” on the east coast. Their fans are no better than anyone else’s, only difference is that the basketball program they pull for is, and has been winning for a pretty long while now, which effectively eliminates the unrealistic, or “lunatic,” label from the equation.

Yeah I know right like when they took credit for Mack Brown Winning The National Championship With TEXAS. The Way they Talked You would have thought They won it not texas.

The Holes have lunatic fringers. Case in point was running off Dohboy and kicking him to the curb after just three seasons. Then rushing in Royboy. Don’t let them, the Holes, paint a large % of Wolfpackers as “crazy, win at all costs, loony, illogical” fans. Yeah, we have some of those. But so do the Blue Bellies. Don’t tell me strings weren’t pulled by the power brokers in the Rams Club to chop off Doherty’s head. Doh didn’t win enough, they wanted Huck Hound, and they got him. But giving a man three years and then just about totally screwing his career.

That’s real “lunatic fringe.” Unlike what the Holes say on their website.

  18. 4NCSU 07/19/2006 at 6:21 PM #

What I meant to say is giving a man three years and then letting him go is pretty bad. No matter how much UNC, the press, the Tarhole alumni, and UNC fans want to paint it differently. Doh didn’t deserve that. UNC screwed with him.

Well put! and undoubtably true. I know too many Carolina faithful and there is still nothing good ever said about the guy responsible for recruiting them their national championship team. Talk about turning your back.
