Friday Football Bytes

Some real quick football hits for your Friday afternoon:

* Related, Back From Vacation Football Bytes in case you missed them.

* Former NC State WR, Brian Clark is featured in this nice article on DenverBroncos.com.

The work ethic came from his mother. The fanaticism about tape study — which is quite palatable to the Academic All-Atlantic Coast Conference honoree — stemmed from his work with State offensive coordinator Marc Trestman, who previously spent 17 seasons on NFL sidelines from Miami to San Francisco.

“He brought to me that philosophy of turning every single page of your playbook, closing your eyes and (visualizing what happens),” Clark said. “I spend probably about an hour to two hours a day of closing my eyes and visualizing plays and putting myself in different situations.”

Trestman arrived in 2005, one year after Clark ascended up the depth chart to become State’s top receiver. But with No. 4 overall selection Philip Rivers no longer around to sling passes after smashing virtually every passing standard in the school’s ledger, Clark’s numbers didn’t quite match up to those of his predecessor, Jerricho Cotchery.

* Koren Robinson was reported to be back in re-hab. But, this piece does a nice job of clarifying the situation.

“People hear rehab and they say, ‘Oh no, he has problems,”‘ Robinson told The Associated Press in a phone interview from South Carolina. “I’m not in rehab. I’m still doing good. I’m still not drinking. I’m still working out. I’m still Koren, the cheerful, happy guy you all saw last year.”

Robinson said he didn’t check himself into a rehab facility and didn’t have a relapse. Rather, he said, he is merely attending some relapse prevention classes in preparation for the start of the grueling NFL season, which affords the Pro Bowl kick returner little time to work on maintaining his recovery.

* CBS Sportline has a great idea and pretty decent execution with this article. Any Wolfpacker, and most college football experts would argue the inclusion of Jason White over Philip Rivers for the 2nd Team. If a single Heisman Trophy is the criteria for the second team, why not give the role to Carson Palmer? He won a national championship to boot.

* Former Wolfpacker, Adrian Wilson has been named one of the NFL’s most underrated players. This connects very nicely to the comments in this link that you will enjoy.

There is opportunity in the Broncos camp for WRs. There are only 3 proven WRs on the roster, and one (Lelie) is seriously in the doghouse, pouting and skipping mandatory mini-camp.

From what I’ve read, KRob may not have relapsed, and is just being proactive in getting treatment. I certainly hope that is the case. Alcoholism is one hell of a disease.

You can’t read a football magazine for very long without reading praise for Adrian Wilson. If that defensive unit as a whole finally gels, he could be viewed as one of the NFL’s true defensive stars. Man, can he ever hit!

The Cardinals improved offense may get Wilson the exposure he deserves.

I remember watching Brian Clark as a freshman and thinking he was an NFL guy. All of our receiving corp was hurt by our offensive problems since Philip left, so it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Clark sticks.

The CBS Sportsline article was very interesting. I could spend all day trying to come up with a better team, but overall despite a slight slant to USC and Miami, it was an admirable job.

However, since there were no SEC players at any of the offensive skill positions, I’d like to nominate a couple:

David Greene (QB) – I believe he is the all time NCAA leader in wins.
Cadillac Williams (RB) – When he was healthy, he was virtually unstopable even against some tough SEC defenses.

By the way, Carson Palmer left USC in 2002; so he never won a title.

^ So, Palmer wasn’t the QB that “split” the title with LSU?

  5. TigerFan 07/08/2006 at 10:20 AM #

^ No, had Palmer won a title, the media would have been talking four-peat this year. USC’s one recent legitimate national championship came in 2004 – if you consider not having to play an undefeated Auburn team legitimate. The “split” title was in 2003. Hollywood glamour boy Leinart was the QB for the whole “three-peat”.

I don’t understand how USC gets credit for a split title. The BCS determines the national champion IIRC. USC has won a single BCS title.
