4 Reasons Big 4 = Bottom 4

Link to Dave Glenn’s blog entry on the four reasons why the Big 4 = The Bottom 4 in football over the last 25 years.

1. Snowball Effect/Expansion.

2. Bad Demographics.

Here’s the breakdown of how many Division I-A signees the traditional ACC states produce on an annual basis, relative to the number of I-A programs in the state: Georgia 75 (150 signees, two teams) prospects per school, Florida 50 (350/7), Virginia 25 (50/2), Maryland 20 (40/2), South Carolina 20 (40/2), North Carolina 12 (60/5). Here’s the breakdown when you limit the same numbers to only BCS-conference teams: Florida 87 (350/4) per school, Georgia 75 (150/2), Maryland 40 (40/1), Virginia 25 (50/2), South Carolina 20 (40/2), North Carolina 15 (60/4).

3. Coaching Turnover.

4. Academic Requirements.

I have listened to Glenn many, many times and I have read the ACCSJ for 20+ years. I thought you were going to have some proof/evidence of his misrepresentation to verify your statements.

As much time as I have spent on State websites and especially when Dave Glenn topics come up, I have a hard time believing that I either missed this misrepresentation or somehow forgot the misrepresentation.

VAWolf, you should record and transcribe what Glenn says and post it here. Hold his feet to the fire.

    “DG is a tool.”

Well I wouldn’t go that far. I find his reporting quite substantive relative to everything else we have to put up with out there in the media. He may have somewhat of a bias, but he is very informed.

I have a hard time believing that I either missed this misrepresentation or somehow forgot the misrepresentation.

IIRC, newswolf typed the article onto a thread at PP premium. Unless you want to accuse him of altering DG’s article, then I’m sure that my facts are 100% correct….believe whatever you want. I traded e-mails with DG about the incident and he refused to admit that he was wrong. He said that he was referring to either a four-year or five-year rolling average….but that was not what the article said.

DG also claimed that he didn’t remember exactly what he said with the smoke and mirror comment about AJ Davis’ recruitment. He said that he couldn’t be expected to remember every radio interview that he did. (Forgive me, but I find that BS less than convincing.)

DG also sings a completely different tune about Amato when he is on a VA radio station vs one in the Triangle. A fairly well-connected UNC grad once told me that “DG’s fondest wish was for the NCAA helicopters to land at the Murphy Center and take Amato away.”

Just because DG is usually right, doesn’t mean that he always is. Just becuase he is usually fair, doesn’t mean that he won’t take liberties with the facts to make UNC look better or to make State look worse. He has done both and I refuse to read his crap.

You can’t hold a snake’s feet to the fire….because he doesn’t have any. I have no intention of buying the ACCSJ just to correct any mistakes he makes about State. If we learn of one that he has made public, or one from a thread at PP….then you can be sure that we will document it here (or post a link if RAWFS.com beats us to the punch).

What exactly does Glenn say about Amato in VA? I’m guessing it’s not positive.

In the Triangle I don’t think he says Amato is a great coach either, I think he normally talks about the coaching turnover being a bad thing but says recruiting is Amato’s good point.

    Mr. O

Good points on athletes in GA. GA ranks in the top 5 nationally in producing Div 1 football players.

In football, while there are a ton of high major recruits – there are two issues in general. One is that the academic level of alot of them are not overly strong which limits somewhat which schools can recruit them. Second, as you mentioned there are alot of schools close to GA borders that recruit in the state quite a bit (Auburn, Clemson, FL, FSU, TN).

That being said, UGA should always field a strong team as they are the state school with a recruiting base all over the state.

You are also correct about basketball where GA ranks in the top 6 nationally in producing top 100 talents. and i’m sure your not surprised that Hewitt is well aware of that and he is doing his best to take advantage of it. He signed Clinch (top 40) and Aminu (top 100) in ’05, Crittenton (top 15) in ’06, Lawal (top 25) in ’07. GT is believed to be the leader for the younger Aminu (top 20) and Thompkins (top 10) in ’08.

NC schools are definately at a disadvantage in FB where there are so many schools competing within the same state.

IMHO, Glenn is perfectly entitled to his opinions. I thought the work he did during the basketball coaching search was extremely solid. And unlike most of the other local yokels, he didn’t take potshots at our “bad fans”, either.

I emailed with Glenn a few years ago about Herb Sendek. He completely understood NC State fans wanting more from the program back then. I have always found him to be quite a reasonable guy.

Vawolf82: I could have missed it, but I just find it hard that I would have missed something on that topic or on Glenn.

He follows football recruiting more than any other member of the ACC media. He compiles his own information on recruits of the various ACC schools that he gets from interviews. He doesn’t publish scores for obvious reasons, he just uses it to get general ideas about the academics of ACC football recruits. Generally, he has always claimed that UNC is in the middle half of the ACC behind GT, UVA, Wake and Duke, but ahead of FSU, Clemson and NC state.

I think he is probably right. I also remember the Stanford information. It had SAT scores for basketball, football and baseball for a single year. I used it all of the time to battle knocks on our recruits.

I also think Glenn did a good job during the coaching search.
