Weekend Open Entry

Weekend open entry:

* We encourage everybody to attend the post-press conference event for Coach Lowe and fly your car flags today.

* Some readers have noticed that we haven’t chimed in with any opinion on the Lowe hire as of yet. We will be doing it in the comingn days.

* Perspective from N&O

* Looks like Monte Towe will be a ‘gameday decision’ prior to today’s press conference.

* Hope that Coach Lowe asks all of his existing players to attend the event this evening to see the out pouring of support and start to get connected to NC State’s tradition.

* Sidney Lowe / Jim Les similarities

Don’t laugh, but i am on dial-up and didn’t get to hear the Ced teasing. What did he say?

  2. tractor57 05/06/2006 at 6:22 PM #

Basically “we’ll give the big man the ball down low again and again and again”

  3. Jamie 05/06/2006 at 6:23 PM #

Sweet! Maybe we will actually get a true PG now, too.

  4. tractor57 05/06/2006 at 6:24 PM #

or maybe develop one from the players we already have – new system, new approach.

  5. tractor57 05/06/2006 at 6:28 PM #

Coach Lowe said all the right things – academics are important, have fun while playing and I know the NBA and what you need to prosper (with a pitch to the parents about taking care of the young men. Great PC on his part. He also announced Harris officially as an assistant.

I think the player with the most to gain (besides Ced if he stays) by this is Gavin. I know he has some body control issues at times, so seeing him leading the break kind of scares me. Where he could hurt teams in an up tempo style of play would be on the secondary break, which we had none of last year. He does great in the half court at getting to the basket, and IMO the time to do that is when guys aren’t fully set in their half court defense. Get the other team into foul trouble, and give your big man some easy put backs because the defense has to react to Gavin, and doesn’t box out well.

Curious… Coach Lowe’s rules — the first three of them — sound familiar.

    From: http://www.aggiesports.com/columnists/premeaux/102804premeaux.htm

Play hard. Play smart. Play together.

Seems simple enough — a string of cliches, really — but how hard, smart or together could the Aggies have played last season, finishing 7-21 overall and 0-16 in conference?

    It worked for the Aggies…

Does anyone know where in can watch the PC online? Can it be watched now that it is over?

I feel compelled to say this since it is “open entry.”

Unfortunately I did not hear the radio broadcast. I was at the IM fields playing with my 2 year old daughter anxiously waiting for 7:00. There was a good turn out (most of the concrete seating was full). Obvioulsy the timing could have been better, but that is a different post.

When Coach Lowe showed up, I think he was moved by the fans and our obvious excitement. It was great to see him here after “the search.” As he talked (and as I was videotaping), I was glancing around at the crowd. Everyone except a handful of adults had smiles on their faces. These handful of adults were visibly wiping away tears.

If they felt like me, they feel that SL is a great fit for us. They finally feel that the last 16 years may not have been in vain. I admire and appreciate the coaches before SL and the advancements they made in the program. However, I feel that we now have a coach that truly represents the Wolfpack Nation. A coach that first hand understands the passion of our history, our years of glory, our years of struggle, but mostly, our future. A future that began today. He will make NCSU truly competitive on a national level. We will not win every time we step out on the floor. But I do feel that we have a coach that will make us competitive every time we step on the floor.

Sorry for the rambling, I am just jazzed about seeing a potentially great coach from our own family come home.

Wow, what a press conference! Lowe shined with personality, smiles, and said what everybody wanted to hear. Return to glory, more up-tempo game, guarantee to Cedric he would be the centerpiece of the offense, play defense, and no references to chopping wood. What a wonderful feeling to look forward to the start of basketball season again. Go Pack!

Liked the PC. Really liked the tone it set. You can tell that the influence Wooten and V had on him was great, but that he really believes in self respect and faith in god and family. He wants others around him to suceed so that he can see the look on their faces when they realize they can become more self confident, more unselfish, while having the time of life doing it.

side note: Kudos to LF. It took him some time, there was hesitation for sure. At first it didn’t seem like he knew what was going on around him, but like a flash of lightening, he finally pulled it off. Thanks Lee, for getting of your keister and fixin’ the damn microphone so that I could hear what coach was saying.

There are comments every now and again about Gavin Grant being out of control, balls bouncing off Cedric Simmons feet and so on.

I was always waiting for Cameron Bennerman to take over an entire basketball game, and drive and slam over anyone who got in his way. He could have dominated, if someone had been reinforcing his confidence and teaching the game, instead of pursuing a theory.

Don’t be down on any of the returning player for any reason, they will regain their playing skills, become more confident, and absolutely improve under Sidney Lowe.

I missed it all, nothing on the news in my area about NCSU, EVER. What kind of welcome did Sidney receive, how many people, how much enthusiasm???

    redfred2,
Have you never heard of the High Post offense which sets up the big man near the top of the key? John Wooden ran it for years at UCLA.

Can you — or anybody — explain how the s-l-o-w N.C. State offense averaged nearly 76 points per game? That was 3rd in the ACC, by the way, ahead of 9 others.

    ^wayofthemaster

    Thanks for your post!

The hard facts about the $$$ are encouraging with respects to Ced. I wish we knew for sure that someone has actually typed out the same info, in black and white, for Simmons to sit down and ponder for a while.

Because all we shot were three pointers, its stacks up if your hitting them, if not..your fucked

  18. vtpackfan 05/06/2006 at 9:42 PM #

Wooden coached when there was no three point line. You can attack the paint more efficiently these days because the threat of three pointers already spread the D. A host of reasons helped the Pack to a high scoring avg.
    1) Playing multiple OT games against inferior opposition.
    2) Credit to the players for executing a high risk, high reward scheme of launching many from behing the arc. (Illinois ’05 the only team to have a good tourney run with this style of play).
3)Let’s not forget the ACC sucked as compared to normal this year. MVC rivaled the ACC this year, some could argue outperformed.

    [waves],

“Can you — or anybody — explain how the s-l-o-w N.C. State offense averaged nearly 76 points per game? That was 3rd in the ACC, by the way, ahead of 9 others.”

Its too bad the other teams usually averaged 76 + on the days they played NC State. The offense slowed the play on the defensive end also, the opposing players could rest for 20+ seconds every time we had the ball. There is an undefined term known as tempo of the game, and we were always a step behind on both ends of the court.

You can’t play basketball relying only the team that you put on the court and praying that they will absolutely execute every night. There are other factors involved, and adjustments can be made to cover when say, three point shots aren’t falling.

The high post offense is fine as an option, just like your favorite, the Princeton offense, but they are options only, to be used when the game dictates. They are not to be used to base every minute of every game, and then just sit back in the coaching seat, for 40 minutes, with your fingers crossed.

We were 10-6 in the ACC. That means you are wrong again red.

  21. redfred2 05/06/2006 at 9:54 PM #

Sorry I was thinking about the really big games, like Wake Forest.

  22. vtpackfan 05/06/2006 at 10:02 PM #

“We were 10-6 in the ACC.”

They went 10-6 in conference play, and yes it was in the ACC, but those were not typical ACC teams. Caner-Medley the star for Maryland, Clemson shot worse a the stripe as a team than Shaq. I think you have to pro-rate this a little. I have to admit though; it can seem great the years State doesn’t lose to Dook at home.

“We were 10-6 in the ACC.”

If that 10-6 is something you really want bring up, I envy you for your ability to accept it as worthy of attention.

  24. Joepack 05/06/2006 at 10:10 PM #

Don’t forget, we were 10-3 and in sole possession of 2nd place in the ACC going into the last week and a half of the season.
