Six Wolfpackers Drafted

It was a nice weekend for NC State to receive some positive PR!!! Six Wolfpackers were selected in the two-day NFL Draft over the weekend, and two others signed free agency contracts on Sunday. The Wolfpacker’s Draft Tracker highlights State’s six draft picks over the weekend. Heck, even Torry Holt got into the swing of things with analysis in ESPN’s studios.

* Prior to the 2006 draft, NC State had produced twelve first round picks. On Saturday, State grew that number by 25% when three players were chosen in the first round. NC State had never had three players selected in the first round in a single season.

* Mario Williams became the first player in both NC State and Atlantic Coast Conference history to be taken with the #1 overall selection in the NFL.

I think that we should highlight some of the information from choppack’s comments:

* 2 of State’s 3 first rounders were lightly-recruited kids who were developed into 1st rounders (McCargo & Lawson)

* 3 of the kids were from NC

* 4 of the kids weren’t big time recruits

State’s first round selections were as follows:

Mario Williams made history when the Houston Texans made him NC State’s and the ACC’s first ever #1 overall selection.

Manny Lawson went #22 overall to San Francisco.

John McCargo went #26 overall to Buffalo.

Other Notes:

* The biggest mistake of the weekend seems to have been Derek Morris’ decision to enter the NFL Draft a year early. Of course, I could have written that exact sentence BEFORE the draft and known it to be true.

* CBS Sportsline Alumni Tracker lists twenty former NC State players on current NFL rosters. That number may be a little high as some of those former Wolfpackers may no longer be in the league. After today’s second round, it looks like NC State will have approximately 25 players on NFL rosters next season.

* Michael Smith had some great comments about Mario being the right pick for the Texans in this piece.

* The ACC was pretty impressive on Saturday, generating 7 of the first 15 selections and leading all conferences for the day with 25 of the 97 total picks on the day. The ACC sent 12 in the first round, 7 in the second round, and 6 in the third round. The conference’s dominance was not lost on many in the national media. ESPN Radio personalities were touting the ACC’s prominence on Sunday morning shows.

* Clemson’s Charlie Whitehurst was drafted in the middle of the third round by the San Diego Chargers to back up Philip Rivers.

* If you plan on following the Texans a little closer, allow me to offer my opinion that they compelted an excellent draft. The Texans needed help everywhere – but some needs were a little more strategic than others. They succeeded in alleviating some pressure from former Pro Bowl wideout, Andre Johnson, when they picked up veteran Eric Moulds in free agency. So, Saturday’s draft yielded two great defensive players (Williams & Demeco Ryans) and two much needed offensive linemen to protect David Carr. Sunday’s picks filled in some more holes for the Texans by diversifying their offensive firepower with the addition of an H-Back (remember Gary Kubiak’s success with Shannon Sharpe in Denver) and Virginia, Wali Lundy (a potential late round steal).

* I also followed the Chargers draft a little closely because of Philip Rivers. Although they failed to land a needed wide receiver to add to their aging corp, they did draft heavily for offensive line help.

* I wonder if any high school recruits out there noticed that other than Duke and Wake Forest, North Carolina was the only other ACC school to not have a player drafted on Saturday? The Tarheels “broke through” when defensive lineman, Chase Page was drafted in the last round by San Diego. Surely the name “Chase Page” will strike fear in the hearts of NFL offensivel linemen all over the country.

* State lost four underclassmen starters to this year’s NFL Draft. There is a lot of good…and a lot of bad in that.

* Sunday’s piece in the News & Observer highlighted the historical day for NC State’s program.

But with three of his players leading the way, Pack coach Chuck Amato said the first-round selections of his former players show that State’s football program is on the right track and should also help in recruiting.

“It shows these young men we’re recruiting that we can make you a first-round draft pick,” said Amato.

Amato had dinner Friday night with another former State player drafted in the first round — Hall of Fame quarterback Roman Gabriel, the second pick of the 1962 NFL draft.

Amato said he handed his cell phone to Gabriel so the former Wolfpack great could speak to Williams and Lawson.

“Roman was proud and happy to wish them luck and congratulations,” Amato said of the pre-draft conversation. “I just wanted them to hear his voice.”

Amato also said he was elated that it was Williams who broke the top-pick barrier for the conference. “The ACC has been going on for 52 years,” Amato said. “I’m glad it was one of our guys to do do it.”

* This link will take you to a guy’s blog who deserves a gold medal for detailing every single day one pick during a live blog on Saturday. He did as well or better than these two guys at FoxSports.com They should be good resources if you want to check on any individual players.

I think one should also note that 2 of those 3 first rounders were lightly-recruited kids who are staff developed into 1st rounders. Additional info that you won’t hear mentioned:
3 of the kids were from NC.
4 of the kids weren’t big time recruits.

Kudos to the kids and kudos to the staff on this one.

I would have watched more of the draft if not for the know it alls at espn…

    [comment about Mario]
He had a bunch of sacks, but that was against lineman that will not be playing on sunday

    [comment about Bush]
The most electrifying player in college football

Now, don’t get me wrong…I agree with the comment about Bush (the dive into the endzone vs UCLA is one of the most spectacular plays I’ve ever seen) but what about “Reggie is going to have a face players as fast as he is now” or show some highlights of his pass blocking.

    3 first rounders
    6 players drafted overall
2 players signed free agent deals
2 players likely to sign free agent deals
    ______
    8-10 players to the NFL
    &
7-5 season record and barely bowl eligible for a weak bowl

    What gives?

Our coaching staff can obviously recruit but the coaching is either suspect or we have had unbelievably bad luck. With all of the talent that is exiting the program from last season, this season will be telling.

^ How many of those players were offensive players?

The defense was ranked #1 in the country 2 years ago and had a very good season last year.

You need to have success on both sides of the ball to win at the high level.

  5. choppack1 05/01/2006 at 8:48 AM #

jncope – Basically, the last 2 years, Amato was fairly stubborn.

We had a 6-1 record when we played conservative offensively.

The results of this years draft should attract better players in years to come. Hopefully that will include offensive players as well and we can expect our record to improve. This is a great day for the Wolfpack and I hate to see posts comdeming the coaching staff for cultivating winners.

5 bowls in 6 years and people are complaining.

Only once in NC State history has a coach made such an accomplishment (Sheridan in a much weaker ACC environment).

  8. choppack1 05/01/2006 at 9:18 AM #

Statefans – Well, I think the complaints have more to do w/ the consecutive 3-5 seasons we’ve had in conference.

It’s pretty obvious that in the last 3 years, we’ve had been at a high water mark for talent and our conference record is 10-14. During that time, we’re 1-2 vs. both Carolina and Wake. We’ve also beaten the conference champs the last 2 years, so we were capable of doing a lot better.

Like I said earlier, I think our staff has done a fantastic job developing talent – especially defensively. However, I think it’s legit for fans to express frustrations when they see these end results. (And, no, it’s not legit to boo when they show the coaches picture on the jumbotron.)

^ These are very, very good points.

  10. Cardiff Giant 05/01/2006 at 9:57 AM #

Just emphasizes how inept our offense was – particularly at quarterback.

  11. wingatewolf 05/01/2006 at 10:41 AM #

    Exactly Cardiff Giant.

What blowhead Irvin and Tom I could never win a Super Bowl in Denver Jackson fail to realize is that it’s hard to win games when your offense gives away 14 to 21 points through interceptions or good field position to the opposing team.

By the way, Bush has to face defenses of Carolina and Tampa Bay 4 times a season.

Mario Williams has to face offensive lines of Jacksonville and Tennesse 4 times a year. And if he gets a hold of Manning watch out. Manning will get happy feet that would make Elvis proud.

We had the #1 defense in ’04 and had a losing record!
My opinion, Cignetti was the QB coach at that time. Further to that, he has now been moved (under Trestman) to TE’s, but he retains the title of Head Recruiter. BTW, how has that recruiting looked the last two years under Cignetti?
I tried to get him to at least scout our HS QB (who lead us to the state championship in ’04) and couldn’t even get a nibble from Cignetti. Finally at the end of the season. Know where that QB is now? SOUTH CAROLINA! Yeah, he was Spurrier’s first signee.
These guys that signed over the weekend were recruited 3-5 years ago.
Recruiting hasn’t looked as sharp the last couple years and the offense has been nothing short of dismal.
And you know, if there hadn’t been a basic ‘fan revolt’ at mid season I’m not sure a RB/QB change would have happened even then.
I am not feeling good about the direction of the program at this point.
However congrats to all who signed over the weekend. Do us proud on Sudays next fall.

Congrats to all the State players drafted. The number drafted is a tribute to the great classes State was able to recruit during the Rivers Era. The lack of NFL talent at UNC is a reflection of the poor job from Torbush and the poor recruiting Bunting did during his first two years. I think we seen the trends reverse on the recruiting trail and on the field.

I’m not trying to be antagonistic, but if I’m John Bunting or other coaches, I would have to question why so many State players are “leaving early” (Mario the exception) despite losing conference records. Leaving early for the pros is one thing if you’re winning championships………

Congrats to Mario, I hope he goes in with a chip on his shoulder with all the crap he is taking about going number #1. I couldn’t believe ESPN, I have watched the draft the last 10 years, I have never seen a number one pick get such disrespect. This year it was all about Bush, their sports updates, started with saying the Saints won the Bush sweepstakes, and many times didn’t even mention Mario went first. Smart move by Chuck, pointing out that NCSU can make you a first round pick. Wished Hoyte was picked also.

  15. Hoosyodaddy81 05/01/2006 at 8:35 PM #

who are the two that got picked up as Free Agents? I think the whole draft crap was terrible. ESPN and the nation worshiped USC and Reggie Bush and even Lineart. Hell they didn’t even spend 2 seconds talking about other starts up at the top like Vince Young…who had an EXCELLENT game against them in the championship. ESPN’s trophy boy got picked up 10th. 9 spots behind Mario Williams, who never won a heisman, a national championship, or even saw the inside of a BCS lockerroom.

SFN – State finished the year 7-5. State didn’t lose games because of our defense. We lost games because of our inability to score and penchant for turnovers early in the year. Guess our defense should have found more ways to score when our offense had the ball.

SFN – How many of those players were offensive players? The defense was ranked #1 in the country 2 years ago and had a very good season last year. You need to have success on both sides of the ball to win at the high level.

I think you may have been missing the point of some of the posts, SFN. Most of us aren’t criticizing the defense – we are criticizing the coaching staff.

I’d like to build on choppack1’s post.

    2005
(7-5) Overall Record (3-5) Conference Record
Losses to both UNC & Wake Forest.
Two of those 7 wins included Middle Tennessee St. (4-7) & Eastern Kentucky (I-AA)

    2004
(5-6) Overall Record (3-5) Conference Record
    Loss to UNC
Two of those 5 wins included ECU (2-9) & Richmond (I-AA)

    2003
(8-5) Overall Record (4-4) Conference Record
    Lost to Wake Forest
One win was against Western Carolina (5-7)

    2002
Yes even the great 2002 season
    (11-3) Overall (5-3) Conference Record
Four of those wins included New Mexico (7-7), East Tennessee St. (2-9), Navy (2-10), & Massachusetts (I-AA)

If you can have 3 players drafted in the first round and 6 overall and only win 12 games over the last two years there is a problem somewhere. The extraordinary number of turnovers and penalties over the last two years point to a lack of coaching.

Maybe you can help me, I’m a Wolfpack fan, but there is something I haven’t understood over the last 3 years, in regard to other Wolfpack fans and their logic. Why is it that Sendek was constantly berated for losing to UNC, and his non-conference schedule, and just about everything else and Amato is loved and adored (please don’t tell me its the glasses and the red shoes, I know Wolfpack fans are smarter than that).

I’ll plead ignorance on my knowledge of SFN’s opinion of Amato since I have only been reading the blog since April 1., although this comment, (SFN – 5 bowls in 6 years and people are complaining) gives me a clue.

(20-16) Overall Record over the last 3 years.
(10-14) Conference Record over the last 3 years.

Losing to teams with (evidenced by this weekend’s draft) far, far less talent (UNC – twice & Wake Forest – twice).

Piling up wins against cupcake non-conference schedule (Middle Tennessee St., Eastern Kentucky, ECU, Richmond, Western Carolina, New Mexico, East Tennessee St, Navy, Massachusetts).

When does Amato begin to feel some heat?

  17. class of 74 05/02/2006 at 7:17 AM #

^Don’t worry the heat is there and just waiting for another lackluster season to really explode. This is a make or break season for Chuck. The memory of PR is all but gone and the last two seasons have been less than satisfying.

Maybe some of us are content with draft day results but I would prefer a conference contender and an ACC championship rather than 6 draft picks annually.

  18. Hoosyodaddy81 05/02/2006 at 1:27 PM #

Oh i’m with you whole heartedly on being all over Chuck. We better have an excellent season this year, considering how boring our schedule is…App State, Akron, Southern Miss, and ECU….
