Pack begins search for new men’s basketball coach

April 3, 2006

Raleigh, N.C. – Statements from Athletics Director Lee Fowler and Chancellor James L. Oblinger:

NC STATE ATHLETICS DIRECTOR LEE FOWLER

“On behalf of the entire NC State community, I would like to thank Herb Sendek and his staff for their 10 successful seasons with our men’s basketball program. Herb inherited a program in 1996 that was in need of consistent success, and he brought that back to NC State basketball, beginning in his first season when he led the team to the first of three appearances in the ACC Championship game.

“In addition, he is one of the finest people I have met in my 32 years of college athletics. We wish Herb, Melanie and their three daughters the greatest success as they begin this new phase of his coaching career. For 10 years, they have been wonderful members of our athletics family.

“We will now begin the process of hiring a new men’s basketball coach. It will be a national search that will concentrate on finding a candidate that will continue the successful tradition of NC State basketball.

“Chancellor Oblinger and I have talked at length about the type of candidates the university will pursue to fill this vacancy. We will continue to communicate frequently during our search for a new men’s basketball coach.”

CHANCELLOR JAMES L. OBLINGER

“In his 10 years as the men’s basketball coach, Herb Sendek brought integrity, hard work and discipline to our program. Coach Sendek, his family, staff and players have been outstanding representatives of our university. We thank them for all they have done to contribute to our basketball tradition. NC State is a better place because of Coach Sendek’s efforts on and off the court and he will always have a special place in the history of Wolfpack basketball.

“We congratulate Coach Sendek on his new position and wish him only the best for the future. As for our future, athletics director Lee Fowler will begin a search for a new coach immediately.”

    How quickly they forget:

The more I think about the last five years of the Sendek era, the more a pattern seems to develop. No matter how the season starts, you can expect things to ultimately level out at a “B minus overall.

I have been a NCSU fan for well over 55 years and I have to say “If NCSU plans to win a conference championship, they will have to move out of the ACC”. There is no way NCSU can ever recruit against UNC (The dirtest word in the english language) and Duke. The only way State would be able to get the same level of players would be to bring John Wooten out of retirement. Don’t think that is going to happen. After watching the 2006 NCAA tournament games in Greensboro, I must say that if they hire the George Washington coach, I will not support the PACK as long as he is there.

I just posted this at the N&O blog, where some fans (not well read) called for Mark Few, Dawkins, and John Pelphrey, but the part I am copying is in relation to the coaching search. As follows:

When I was in the student senate at NCSU, Les came to the senate and discussed O’Cain’s replacement with us, at the request of our vixen like President Pro Tempore. He promised it would be a big name. Amato, at the time, certainly was (one of Bowden’s boys {Richt being the other} when FSU was the creme de la creme of NCAA fb). Fowler understands the importance of his legacy, and a big name can put him in the good graces of the fans, many of which, up till this point have doubted his vision.

A mid major coach, a small name coach, will be an utter failure. Fowler knows it. He knows how to wring the purse strings, and he will choose accordingly, he will produce. I don’t have much faith in Fowler in firing, but I trust him in hiring.

Guys failure (the new hire) should be defined after three seasons of results not how recognizible the coaches name is. A coulple of years from now if the new coach has gone to the sweet sixteen or better then that would be a good hire. If he struggles well that’s another matter. I want someone who has purpose, pride and passion but most importantly will win and hang some new banners! I don’t care if he is a household name or a no name. Just give us a winner.

74, well stated, but Fowler realizes the only thing that could make our fanbase madder than it was this past season is hiring an unknown. Sure, the ultimate hope is he will be a winner. Fowler just understands he may not be around to enjoy that success if he hires some new guy from Coastal Connecticut.
