Slow News Day

Undoubtedly, you noticed that we didn’t post any news yesterday afternoon. That’s because…there isn’t much to tell. This phenomenon is not limited to us – just take a look at this article from the N&O. It seems to be the primary focus of message board traffic this morning, and it tells you…basically nothing. If anything, it should make you feel much better about Chris Wright. Based on his mother’s comments, it seems like he definitely liked the whole NC State package – not just the coaching staff.

The only other new front is the Tubby Smith rumblings. As far rumors go, we can confirm (based on SFN’s own sources) that this is legitimate, and has been since Sunday. It’s still very unclear how deep and/or mutual this interest may be.

One more thing to add to my previous comment. Gillispie has proven to be the turnaround master, but State has already “turned around.” Despite the final RPI numbers, State has a longer history, a better program, and an all-around better team than A&M at this point. We don’t need to have done to us what Gillispie did at UTEP and A&M — that work has already been done.

I’m not sure Gillispie could take us to that next level immediately. He might very well do that with A&M in the next couple of years — and I think has the potential to do that long-term anywhere — but his foundation is in Texas… he’s got a head start. It would take him some time to get acquainted with basketball in ACC country, whereas it won’t be that painful a transition for some others whose names have been mentioned.

^^We realistically might not get one of the big names, but let’s be serious here, we would NEVER go after a Snyder at this point. We need an up and coming young coach, not a down and out Dookie.

^^ I agree that Snyder would be a funky choice, but it still wouldn’t surprise me given that we’ve gone after such illustrious names as Les Robinson and Herb Sendek. Even Valvano was a young unknown at Iona. Barnes coached at Clemson, and while not a Dookie, technically he was a Tiger at one point. Also I wouldn’t cast Snyder as a “down and out”. His record was pretty good for the first few years at Mizzou. Scarily similar to Sendek and Valvano’s first years before we offered them the job. But while it would still be hard to see Snyder in red and white. Don’t be surprised…

WBT radio just reported that State’s offer to Barnes is 2.2 million which is more than Texas has offered. Also, they reported that they are on the plane to Texas to talk to him! I guess he’ll be answering Yes or No soon!

^Wendell Murphy would trade his hog farms for ant farms before Quin Snyder would be named coach at NCSU!

  6. JTO 04/05/2006 at 5:29 PM #

Snyder: 16-14, 16-17, 12-16 in the last three seasons in the big 12. Get serious.

In case you are wondering, the call signs for Wendell Murphy’s two airplanes are N88MF and N89MF. This information is available from the FAA’s registry.

you never know what might happen if they are willing to dangle the big carrot.

I don’t know where WBT is getting their info, but they were right on the 2 million yesterday. My gut feeling if they are announcing 2.2, the actual negotiating number probably is higher than that.

I hope this is true, we are at a major crossroads with our program, if we make the right choice there is no limit to what can happen, the wrong hire can result in worse results than what herb gave us, I hope to find something out in the next day or so

I just hope Fowler & Co. do EVERYTHING POSSIBLE to get Barnes. IF Lee manages to pull this one off, I swear I’ll shut my mouth, be eternally grateful, & never utter a negative comment about the man again.

One thing to keep in mind, Texas will not pay a basketball coach more than they will pay a football coach. I do no know what Mack Brown makes but if I was NCSU I would offer $50,000k more to Barnes than what Brown currently makes

Catch me up, has Barnes become more than a rumor or hope. I thought it was a deversion tactic to take the heat off of other canidates more available. I know he hasn’t said no yet but though Texas was reworking his contract

The Quinn Snyder thing was a joke… I realize no Wolfpacker would stomach his girly butt on our sidelines…
I came to State in 1983 (Yep..what a way to start school) and I have passionately watched State’s bball and fball programs go from the heights (Valvano and Sherridan) to plateau out at as a second teir ACC team (Sendek and Amato). It’s been a frustrating journey.
It’s well past time for the Pack to step up and start spending the moolah that will bring Barnes in for bball while keeping an eye out for the next up and coming fball coach.

Wendell must be watching the Master’s in Augusta if he’s with his airplane.
    😉
