No News Doesn’t FEEL Like Good News (3:55 Update)

Are we just pessimistic? Our 50/50 feeling this morning is starting to slide the bad direction.

We think that State has the ability to go to $2.0 million per year for Calipari despite, which is higher than Memphis’ best offer of $1.5 million to $1.7 million.

We won’t spend time crunching the negative side of the equation until we have to. So, please don’t run off thinking that we have inside scoop that we aren’t getting Calipari. We don’t have that scoop.

We do know that Memphis is working hard to keep him. Of course, we are concerned with the fact that he is currently sitting in Memphis around his family, his friends, and his team while we are all sitting in Raleigh. That is not a great bargaining position in which to be sitting.

The good news is that at this time (3:30pm ET), Memphis does not yet have an answer from Calipari, either.

Dave Glenn has updated his blog and is reporting that Calipari is currently meeting with the Athletics Director and key boosters (3;45 ET). A few thoughts:

* If he Calipari telling them Memphis that he is taking NC State’s job, then the wheels will be in motion, team meetings will be called, and the news should flush out quickly.

* If he is discussing Memphis’ proposed deal and not providing an answer to anyone, then we doubt that anyone gets an answer before tomorrow.

* If he is telling Memphis that he is staying, we don’t know if NC State will sweeten the pot or if it will matter (since Calipari has maintained from the start of his overtures to NC State that this wasn’t about money).

Let’s just say that NC State officials are…we’ll use the word “antsy”.

In the end, this will all boil down to how truthful Calipari has been with NC State from the beginning. If the pieces of the puzzle that he represented as most important to him (ACC’s stage, competitiveness on the national stage, University’s commitment to him) are truly the drivers of the decision, then there is nothing that Memphis can do about the situation.

If those issues are not the key drivers of his thought process, then this was all about money and NC State was played masterfully by a maestro.

We will find out in the next 24 hours, but we urge everyone not to jump to the negative conclusion until the news is official. Please behave the way that you did as the Rick Barnes talks dissolved.

…developing…

all I heard at lunch was we’ll be stuck with a mid major dude because State’s bball program isn’t that well known and shouldn’t be mentioned with the greats of unc and duke.. god I’m so sick of the holes eating their own bs. I had to remind the holes contingency of our history/tradition from the 50’s through the V years. haven’t talked to any Dook fans yet. I guess they are still hiding because of the LAX fallout.

6-4 sequoia, good for you, you have permission to be here. Keep up the good work, you deserve a raise!

And Pack92, I have to agree, Chuck does have the attitude and red to be successful. I love the attitude, the spunk, the charisma, whatever you want to call it. I fear though for the upcoming season, even with a cupcake schedule.

crap, franklin street, they sound so good together for some reason

Beowulf, that is OLD SCHOOL! I work with a gentleman who played football at State in the 60’s and actually knew Chuck and his brother pretty well. The stories from back then are awesome!

having a crack engineering school…. working with the geeks is something we should be use to…. I saw my share of pocket protectors at the games…

If Chuck can somehow keep the defense glued together, I think we’ll be just fine this year.

If the guy that writes the big checks is optimistic at this point then I’m optimistic too!

Mike, I heard from a friend at the game we have a reshirt freshman? (Greco) who looks like Phillip Rivers with legs. Anyone else heard that?

Pack92, My nextdoor neighbor was Chuck’s suitemate in Bragaw Dorm. (next to the very suite I stayed in on the fourth floor). He talks about his party tricks all the time. To impress the girls, Chuck would have someone tie a leather belt around his (even bigger back then) chest and cinch it as tight as he could. He would then breathe in and flex, snapping the belt at the latch. Then he would proceed to get laid by whoever he chose.

Wolborsky and Craft fighting it out for Cal. I have the house for him. Cowher said his contribution will be to let Cal live in his NR digs until he leaves Pittsburgh to come home.

Heck, I’m so old, I was there when Case was coaching and lived part of my freshman year under Riddick Stadium before moving down to Alexander so I’d be closer to Reynolds and Carmichael!

  12. highstick 04/10/2006 at 4:28 PM #

Oh, yea I knew Rosie and used to watch Chuck wrestle as a freshman too!

Pack92, I hate to get sidetracked by football, but since it is Pack and I football, hard to resist. Greco is a leftie that can run, and Greco had said he was going to beat out Davis and Stone for PT last year. So he certainly has the ‘tude, though not sure about his ability. Kid out of Fla, can run and throw, so we shall see. Of course, Stone could run and throw too……..

The gentleman I work with told me Chuck had a most enjoyable time with 2 Marines who had made comments to a young lady he was with that night. I don’t think RPD was too worried about Chuck when they got there!

  15. Pack92 04/10/2006 at 4:30 PM #

Highstick, do you know/remember Roy Wood?

  16. 6-4Sequoia 04/10/2006 at 4:33 PM #

It was funny moving in next to a guy who stayed in the same dorm I did over 30 years before me. I couldn’t believe that he knew Chuck on top of all that. His name is Cal and his son Sammi is now going to State as well. He and Chuck are still friends and talk a few times a year. They must not be too close though, because his season football tickets are only on the 25 yard line.

Still great to hear old stories about campus life. It doesn’t sound too different than what we were doing in the mid -90’s

Greco needs to work on his passing game and five step drop back if he is to give Stone any competition.

  18. BladenWolf 04/10/2006 at 4:34 PM #

Right now he is just a great athlete that can scramble (good running game).

  19. 6-4Sequoia 04/10/2006 at 4:35 PM #

does he scramble better than stone? I was impressed at his ability to elude sacks. Of course, compared to davis, I would look pretty quick.

  20. BladenWolf 04/10/2006 at 4:37 PM #

LOL. He can move around ver well, but his arm is the question mark. You have to pass in the ACC and he looks like a ground QB to me at this point.

  21. RAWFS 04/10/2006 at 4:38 PM #

Davis was a tree. He got sawed down a lot too.

Then again, I worry less about QB than the OL.

  22. 6-4Sequoia 04/10/2006 at 4:41 PM #

I still have daydreams about our current defense playing with River’s offense from just a few short years ago. If those two forces were coupled for 4 years, I can’t help but think we would have had at least one championship blossom from that crew.

  23. Pack92 04/10/2006 at 4:42 PM #

I have always thought Stone had pocket passer POTENTIAL . He did look much better in the 2nd half of the season. Except for the bowl game and we now have their Defensive Coordinator!

  24. highstick 04/10/2006 at 4:45 PM #

Roy Wood? The name doesn’t ring a bell.

  25. Pack92 04/10/2006 at 4:47 PM #

Roy played football about the same time you were there and also did a split shift with the Army. He and I both have a Wood Science degree.
