No News Doesn’t FEEL Like Good News, II

We apologize for any site problems that you may be experiencing or have experienced. What do you expect when this thing was put together to just be a regular old blog and has blown up as it has?

We didn’t feel very good yesterday afternoon. We felt better last night. We feel like shit today.

Today has been painful as a lot of Wolfpackers continue to wait and wait and wait.

* It seems that people in Memphis are feeling a lot of confidence related to the Calipari sitution. People close to Memphis have indicated to us that they think that they are going to retain Cal and that he has been playing NC State from the beginning.

* We are changing courses for a moment on when news is good news. We now think that if we hear anything “official” tonight then the advantage goes to Memphis. We PREDICT (no scoop) that State may be in the counter-offer stage right now. Our primary hope may be that we attach such a high value to Calipari in light of the public nature of the courtship that we offer an osbscene amount of money to him and tell him that the offer is only valid for as long as we are on the telephone together.

* If State is in a position to have to counter and offer more money, don’t let anyone tell you that it “isn’t about money”. As a friend of mine reminded me today, “It is always about money”.

* Dave Glenn has reported that the Memphis players have been told to keep their mouths shut on the situation and they are obeying.

* Memphis came to a contract agreement with football coach, Tommy West today. They obviously are in contract mode. The good news is that an official release regarding Calipari has not yet come.

* We are going to hold back from breaking down “ifs” right now as there will be plenty of time to debrief in the future. It is safe to say that NC State was led to believe that Calipari had much more genuine interest in the position than would be reality if he does not accept the job.

* We apologize for doing this, but this report from Baton Rouge is not going to make you feel any better:

LSU coach John Brady’s name remains high on North Carolina State’s list of potential coaching candidates, according to several media reports.

* For the record, we don’t like Brady as a candidate; especially a candidate placed anywhere near #3 or #4 of the Wolfpack’s list. We’d would much prefer to see NC State take a chance on a Billy Gillispie.

* We continue to worry about any candidate after Calipari on the State list as we’re not convinced that there is a next candidate. We pray to God that Lee Fowler has been engaged in serious talks with the likes of Jay Wright and Gillispie while under the cover of the media glare with Calipari (just as he failed to do during our talks with Barnes).

* Please relax. If State doesn’t land John Calipari, there will be other candidates. We have every reason in the world (other than John Brady) that NC State’s next coach will ultimately be a better fit and produce better long term results than the previous coach.

Let’s all just calm down until we hear something from someone we trust.

TARHOLES HAVE WAY MORE CONFIDENCE THAN WE DO. LETS BE A LITTLE OPTIMISTIC EVEN IF ITS ONLY PRETEND.

Simmons needs another year and a coach that can develop his talent. Only players that left early or transferred from State improved. players did not improve under Herb. Hodge lost his shot, Nuggets still trying to figure out how they drafted a kid that can’t shoot. He could shoot ligths out when he got to State. herb only ended up like his players he transferred/left early cause there was not going to be any growth or getting better under the current situation. Plus if herb knew ced might leave explains why he was stamping his ticket out of town. Herb built his record on playing nobodies non conference and hoping to squeak out a 500 conference record and hoping his lobbying the NCAA tournament to expand the field so he could survive. With Ced gone herb loses next year and gets fired. Herb did what was best for Herb, I don’t blame him and wish him well. Herb took us as far as he could, he never got better as a coach and never changed his system to the strenght of his players and never played the game for the development of players or getting better. He played a system to save his ass. My biggest problem with herb was he was selfish. He put himself first.

Yes..Herb leaving was a good thing..The Herb Sendek 33-Oh-Oh Offense(Hold the ball for 33 seconds and Oh-Oh..better take a shot! LOL) was getting to be too much to watch year in and year out.
No matter who we hire, things will be more fun around here.
Lets get behind who ever comes in and make him feel like the big part of Wolfpack nation that he will become as our next coach!

I personally think its time to take a look at Mid-Major coaches as the big dog coaches are running the money train on us. Gregg Marshall might be a good option to consider. He is doing some good things at Winthrop and he is just down the road in Rock Hill, SC. He would certainly not want over 2 mil to come..

Those on the Memphis board now can’t know more than any of us. Hell, you guys tracked down Folwer’s flight on Sunday!!!!!!! They had no idea! Right now, only Cal knows.

    From a Memphis Board:

    Evening update…

As I expected, it appears Coach Cal will be staying put in Memphis. If it hasn’t happened already, an announcement should come tonight or in the morning. I was told it could happen this evening so it would make deadline for newspapers tomorrow.

Now that this appears to be coming to an end, I think it is interesting how coaching searches are vastly different today than just a few years ago before the internet. Fans can connect immediately with other fans; the fans & the media can track airplanes & then speculate on who is on them; numerous blogs can provide insight or additional info to what the mainstream media is offering.

“The University of Memphis got a contract done with its coach today, but it wasn’t John Calipari. Instead, it was Tommy West, the football coach who has directed the Tigers to three consecutive bowls, a period of unprecedented success at the school.
The agreement extends West’s contract through 2010, an extension of one year, gives West a raise and adds incentive bonuses. Additional money was also made available for West’s assistant coaches.

West has compiled a record of 32-28 in five seasons at the helm of the Memphis program.
The situation with Calipari, who is being wooed by North Carolina State for its men’s basketball opening, remains unresolved.”

oh i know its not the end of the world, and there is more important things to worry about but after 24 years of this I should have known. That is just the way it is. If it was unc they would have not only got the coach, but somehow a bag of gold and 10 naked strippers with him. It is just how it is and will always be

Does anyone know if there is a way to “report” people that abuse the board? It’s sad to see something that should be valuable get degraded because a bunch of children or pyschopaths (or childish psychopaths) feel compelled to say crap… it’s as if they just get some immense pleasure out of seeing what they type on the screen. As someone who values the concept of what the board is supposed to represent I would love to see a feature where a person/ID could be banned.

    Jeremy Hyatt,

This is your only warning. Please stop wasting bandwidth with nothingness in your posts. If you want to act like an idiot, go to the idiot boards. We appreciate your enthusiasm, but we are more focused on quality here and not interested in bullshit like you and Phil Ford.

    Thanks

It ain’t done until it’s done, and near as I can tell, Calipari has never made us any promises.

I hope we land Calipari — I think it’s a move up for him.

If not him, I vote for Billy Gillespie.

More bad news from the espn message boards below. I need another shot of liquid optimism. I feel as bad now as I felt good last night when Cal was riding the zamboni while Lunatic Fringe played over the PA system.

On AM 560 between 5 & 5:30 the hosts were all very confident Cal was staying at Memphis. Dave Woloshin was not using very many caveats. On one call they (all three hosts) just said “yes” to a caller that asked if Cal was coming back.

They sounded very upbeat to me like they knew something and could hardly keep it in.

As the play by play voice of the Tigers you got to figure Woloshin is either an insider or knows them all. He talked like it was all but done.

This is a total 180 from the attitude of the morning hosts from earlier today. The morning guys sounded worried, the afternoon guys did not.

Is the Memphis board that’s saying that he’s surely staying the same one that said there was no way in hell Calpiari was in Raleigh last night? I thought so. They know just as much as we do until there is official word.
