No News Doesn’t FEEL Like Good News, II

We apologize for any site problems that you may be experiencing or have experienced. What do you expect when this thing was put together to just be a regular old blog and has blown up as it has?

We didn’t feel very good yesterday afternoon. We felt better last night. We feel like shit today.

Today has been painful as a lot of Wolfpackers continue to wait and wait and wait.

* It seems that people in Memphis are feeling a lot of confidence related to the Calipari sitution. People close to Memphis have indicated to us that they think that they are going to retain Cal and that he has been playing NC State from the beginning.

* We are changing courses for a moment on when news is good news. We now think that if we hear anything “official” tonight then the advantage goes to Memphis. We PREDICT (no scoop) that State may be in the counter-offer stage right now. Our primary hope may be that we attach such a high value to Calipari in light of the public nature of the courtship that we offer an osbscene amount of money to him and tell him that the offer is only valid for as long as we are on the telephone together.

* If State is in a position to have to counter and offer more money, don’t let anyone tell you that it “isn’t about money”. As a friend of mine reminded me today, “It is always about money”.

* Dave Glenn has reported that the Memphis players have been told to keep their mouths shut on the situation and they are obeying.

* Memphis came to a contract agreement with football coach, Tommy West today. They obviously are in contract mode. The good news is that an official release regarding Calipari has not yet come.

* We are going to hold back from breaking down “ifs” right now as there will be plenty of time to debrief in the future. It is safe to say that NC State was led to believe that Calipari had much more genuine interest in the position than would be reality if he does not accept the job.

* We apologize for doing this, but this report from Baton Rouge is not going to make you feel any better:

LSU coach John Brady’s name remains high on North Carolina State’s list of potential coaching candidates, according to several media reports.

* For the record, we don’t like Brady as a candidate; especially a candidate placed anywhere near #3 or #4 of the Wolfpack’s list. We’d would much prefer to see NC State take a chance on a Billy Gillispie.

* We continue to worry about any candidate after Calipari on the State list as we’re not convinced that there is a next candidate. We pray to God that Lee Fowler has been engaged in serious talks with the likes of Jay Wright and Gillispie while under the cover of the media glare with Calipari (just as he failed to do during our talks with Barnes).

* Please relax. If State doesn’t land John Calipari, there will be other candidates. We have every reason in the world (other than John Brady) that NC State’s next coach will ultimately be a better fit and produce better long term results than the previous coach.

he doesn’t need to be in Raleigh for the story to leak. news like this leaks a considerable amount of time before the press conference

The national media will love to say “we told you so” when we get another mid-major coach. All we will hear is that we should not have “run” Herb out of town just to get someone of equal or leser value. In my opinion at least we tried and who is to say the mid-major coach we get won’t be better then Herb.

Where did that info come from?

I’m not worried or depressed…just anxious. We can be relatively sure that a team meeting took place today. That no news has leaked out either way is strange, but that’s no big woop. What I think has been going on today is the 24 hour grace period that Calipari granted Memphis for a counter-offer, the NC State rebuttal, and numerous phone calls to recruits telling them the situation, one way or another. If we hear something official tomorrow, it’s bad for us. If we hear nothing official until Thursday, it’s good for us (because of the whole Erskine Bowles ceremony being on Wednesday). I don’t think we’re being used solely for contract leverage mainly because of the presence of Cal’s assistants on the campus tour. Like someone already said, to play with your livelihood is one thing, but I have a hard time seeing someone dragging the assistants along if there wasn’t some good faith agreemant. Then again, that’s just one man’s opinion.

Everyone should settle down. coach cal was in town last night for a reason. It took me 2 weeks to move a couple miles down the road. At least we could give him 2 days.

Truckee, CA…the North Lake Tahoe area. I hit the Nevada Wolfpack games once in a while.

The only “leaks” I’ve heard in the last few hours are that Cal is staying at Memphis. The current one is that he signed a new contract with Memphis this afternoon. That sounds fishy because it wouldn’t give timetable for us to counter, but if he was just using the NC State thing as a lever to get more money out of Memphis it would make sense.

    Tahoe is a nice area.

From the way this is looking he is not coming. Fox News 13 in Memphis is fixing to do an interview with the Memphis AD stating that they are about to close the deal to keep him in Memphis.

If this does not pan out, we need to take a big step back and re-evaluate who we go after as the next coaching candidate. This getting used like a dish rag for more money is getting old….fast. I want someone who WANTS to be here not just for the money.
Wolfpack pride means more to me than the cash..

  22. NYPack 04/11/2006 at 5:56 PM #

most recent relevant story on the AP wire is “NC State pursuing Calipari”

  23. BJD95 04/11/2006 at 5:56 PM #

Read between the lines – the only way this changes is IF we counter and throw an obscene ($2.5M per year?) amount of money at Cal, essentially making him the highest paid coach in college basketball. Even then he might turn us down. It’s a bad, bad scene tonight. We’re screwed.

Still was not a mistake to let Herb walk. He had hit his ceiling, and it wasn’t good enough. You have to try your hand with somebody else. A mid-major hire would be as likely to better as to do worse (with a considerable likelihood of doing the same).
