No News Doesn’t FEEL Like Good News, II

We apologize for any site problems that you may be experiencing or have experienced. What do you expect when this thing was put together to just be a regular old blog and has blown up as it has?

We didn’t feel very good yesterday afternoon. We felt better last night. We feel like shit today.

Today has been painful as a lot of Wolfpackers continue to wait and wait and wait.

* It seems that people in Memphis are feeling a lot of confidence related to the Calipari sitution. People close to Memphis have indicated to us that they think that they are going to retain Cal and that he has been playing NC State from the beginning.

* We are changing courses for a moment on when news is good news. We now think that if we hear anything “official” tonight then the advantage goes to Memphis. We PREDICT (no scoop) that State may be in the counter-offer stage right now. Our primary hope may be that we attach such a high value to Calipari in light of the public nature of the courtship that we offer an osbscene amount of money to him and tell him that the offer is only valid for as long as we are on the telephone together.

* If State is in a position to have to counter and offer more money, don’t let anyone tell you that it “isn’t about money”. As a friend of mine reminded me today, “It is always about money”.

* Dave Glenn has reported that the Memphis players have been told to keep their mouths shut on the situation and they are obeying.

* Memphis came to a contract agreement with football coach, Tommy West today. They obviously are in contract mode. The good news is that an official release regarding Calipari has not yet come.

* We are going to hold back from breaking down “ifs” right now as there will be plenty of time to debrief in the future. It is safe to say that NC State was led to believe that Calipari had much more genuine interest in the position than would be reality if he does not accept the job.

* We apologize for doing this, but this report from Baton Rouge is not going to make you feel any better:

LSU coach John Brady’s name remains high on North Carolina State’s list of potential coaching candidates, according to several media reports.

* For the record, we don’t like Brady as a candidate; especially a candidate placed anywhere near #3 or #4 of the Wolfpack’s list. We’d would much prefer to see NC State take a chance on a Billy Gillispie.

* We continue to worry about any candidate after Calipari on the State list as we’re not convinced that there is a next candidate. We pray to God that Lee Fowler has been engaged in serious talks with the likes of Jay Wright and Gillispie while under the cover of the media glare with Calipari (just as he failed to do during our talks with Barnes).

* Please relax. If State doesn’t land John Calipari, there will be other candidates. We have every reason in the world (other than John Brady) that NC State’s next coach will ultimately be a better fit and produce better long term results than the previous coach.

That ESPN article is much more of a dig at Calipari than it is against NC State.

What I want: someone who believes they are the best of the best. Someone who will come to NC State with the belief not just that he can run with the big dogs, but the belief that he can BEAT the big dogs. Someone like this would have already made a name for himself for being extremely competitive and not settling for second-best…ever.

What I don’t want: someone who just wants the opportunity to play with some of the greatest names of college basketball. This seems to fit the bill for most of the mid-major coaches we would be looking to get. I mean, the NC State job is definitely a good job (I don’t care what a bunch of media types seem to think), but taking it for the chance to play second fiddle to the likes of K and Williams…spare me.

If Calapari stays with Memphis because he could be the “big fish” then he doesn’t fit that bill. If he stays in Memphis because of the money–hey, that’s mercenary, and I can dig it. I will say that out of almost all the other potentials, Calipari seems to have the most moxy, and that’s why I’ll be hurt if he doesn’t come.

Either way, I really want to hire someone who has the belief that they are the best, and will coach like that every game. I don’t want another “relationship-building” coach.

I could be wrong here guys… but I actually think the lack of news is a good thing. I have a hunch that there are a lot of notifications going on in the background and neither party wants the news broken until after all of those notifications have occurred. This isn’t about doing it “fast”, it’s about doing it “right”.

Now having said that… I could be wrong 🙁

I am significantly less optimistic than the site admin. This is really, really depressing news. We are going to take a huge PR blackeye, and the national media will no doubt love having another round of laughs at our expense.

EVERY POSSIBLE remaining candidate will be a wild card. Maybe they’ll do well, maybe not. The letdown after Barnes/Calipari will be dramatic. The new coach won’t be greeted with much excitement, and the fanbase will not be unified without quick, significant success (which is now unlikely without a “big name” to convince current commits to stay and immediately land more top shelf talent).

I suppose the good news is “at least we tried.” For so many years past at NC State, we haven’t even gotten off the bench to take our swings. But to take the baseball analogy futher, the middle of the order has struck out, and the utility infielder is up to bat. The best we can hope for is a single, with an oustide shot at a double. No home run is forthcoming.

Instead of being distracted at work tomorrow, we can all be unproductive due to depression. At least it’s something different. 🙁

I just want a coach to be named so they can talk to ced. He is making a big mistake. It needs to be done fast so they can sit down and have a talk with him. If not we might not have team to coach next year if ced leaves and people transfer

Our baseball will kick the shit out of the Memphis baseball team!

I have been reduced to Old Crow. Some body shine some hope on Cal coming to The Pack.

Guys, there has been NO NEWS. Hopefully details are just being worked out in our favor. 1000 more blogs today and I’m back at 50/50…sweet. Time for a jog.

  18. WestCoast 04/11/2006 at 5:43 PM #

PackPride83, I agree with you. If we knew right now it would be bad news.

  19. cam 04/11/2006 at 5:43 PM #

    good old mud but

  20. NYPack 04/11/2006 at 5:43 PM #

    At least Herb is gone.

  21. Jeremy Hyatt 04/11/2006 at 5:44 PM #

so are you saying, that taking longer may not be bad? because they have to work out the details, and be careful to let the right people know first like players and stuff? hmm

  22. Jeremy Hyatt 04/11/2006 at 5:45 PM #

i think that maybe letting Herb go was a mistake.

  23. BJD95 04/11/2006 at 5:45 PM #

The Yahoo article just makes me more depressed. That only works when the name is “John Cailpari” – not with any of the B-listers.

  24. Wolfman300 04/11/2006 at 5:45 PM #

    Hyatt:

If Ced leaving is fact it is news to me. I’ve heard he was considering and never heard anything official. Is that documented?

I’m so tired of getting excited / upset for no reason that I’m tired of hearing statements that don’t pan out. This SUCKS!

  25. PackPride83 04/11/2006 at 5:46 PM #

That’s exactly what I am saying. Details have to be worked out, people have to be notified… oh… and uh… don’t you think it might be a good idea for him to actually BE in Raleigh when the press conference eventually happens?
