No News Doesn’t FEEL Like Good News, II

We apologize for any site problems that you may be experiencing or have experienced. What do you expect when this thing was put together to just be a regular old blog and has blown up as it has?

We didn’t feel very good yesterday afternoon. We felt better last night. We feel like shit today.

Today has been painful as a lot of Wolfpackers continue to wait and wait and wait.

* It seems that people in Memphis are feeling a lot of confidence related to the Calipari sitution. People close to Memphis have indicated to us that they think that they are going to retain Cal and that he has been playing NC State from the beginning.

* We are changing courses for a moment on when news is good news. We now think that if we hear anything “official” tonight then the advantage goes to Memphis. We PREDICT (no scoop) that State may be in the counter-offer stage right now. Our primary hope may be that we attach such a high value to Calipari in light of the public nature of the courtship that we offer an osbscene amount of money to him and tell him that the offer is only valid for as long as we are on the telephone together.

* If State is in a position to have to counter and offer more money, don’t let anyone tell you that it “isn’t about money”. As a friend of mine reminded me today, “It is always about money”.

* Dave Glenn has reported that the Memphis players have been told to keep their mouths shut on the situation and they are obeying.

* Memphis came to a contract agreement with football coach, Tommy West today. They obviously are in contract mode. The good news is that an official release regarding Calipari has not yet come.

* We are going to hold back from breaking down “ifs” right now as there will be plenty of time to debrief in the future. It is safe to say that NC State was led to believe that Calipari had much more genuine interest in the position than would be reality if he does not accept the job.

* We apologize for doing this, but this report from Baton Rouge is not going to make you feel any better:

LSU coach John Brady’s name remains high on North Carolina State’s list of potential coaching candidates, according to several media reports.

* For the record, we don’t like Brady as a candidate; especially a candidate placed anywhere near #3 or #4 of the Wolfpack’s list. We’d would much prefer to see NC State take a chance on a Billy Gillispie.

* We continue to worry about any candidate after Calipari on the State list as we’re not convinced that there is a next candidate. We pray to God that Lee Fowler has been engaged in serious talks with the likes of Jay Wright and Gillispie while under the cover of the media glare with Calipari (just as he failed to do during our talks with Barnes).

* Please relax. If State doesn’t land John Calipari, there will be other candidates. We have every reason in the world (other than John Brady) that NC State’s next coach will ultimately be a better fit and produce better long term results than the previous coach.

Bladen, ever thought of trying out for the Duke lacrosse team?

This is sad. My personal feeling is that this is the end of optimism. Nothing against the other candidates, but they cannot accomplish what needs to be done. The situation has been so poorly managed over the last 10 plus years that its about WAY more than coaching ability. While I think Fowler has probably done as good as could be expected in this search, the problem is what has happened over the last 5 (or more) years. I say don’t bother hiring a BB coach, save the money, and throw it at a football coach so that there can be SOMETHING to cheer at.

Tudor was only relaying the same story from the Memphis TV station. He has no additional information from what has already been reported.

    Well, let’s regroup:
    1) Herb’s gone. This is good.
    2) Fowler/Oblinger/Murphy put together a really nice package. Not their fault if prospective coaches are not acting in good faith.
    3) Still some pretty good coaches out there who will jump at the chance to make big bucks and compete on the ACC stage.
    4) Herb’s gone.
    5) Herb’s gone.

Marshall from Winthrop, hire him like Casey did Valvano. here’s the money, we need a coach tomorrow. Cal is a good coach but if he not up to the challenge then you don’t want him.

are we this pathetic? is our money not good enough? are there no men out there with the balls to go up against ratman and fakebake tan man? i thought calipari had what it takes to stare these two guys down and take it to them. i thought he was the kind of guy that would live for such a challenge. apparently not. he’d rather be a big, slimy, stinky fish in a little tiny pond than vie for the opportunity to be king of the freakin hill of basketball. find a MAN with BALLS. i don’t care if you have to go to a technical college or high school.
i am dantheman and i am sad, mad, and not happy
    and oh yeah, completely disgusted

Remember Valvano was one of the first coaches to use interviewing to get more money where he was.

Why do many of you think that Cal is the end of the road? Many of you hate BK, but I think he would be a winner – certainly not afraid of Roy or CoachK. The problem is that he is ready to retire and unlikely to leave TT.

What about Tubby? Probably a better choice than Cal anyway… he actually has a National Title already. I don’t think it would be as hard to seduce him as others think.

Pitino? I could easily see him come as well.

Cal isn’t the end of the road! Chins’ up – Herb’s gone!!

When Sloan left for Florida the program was on the decline and everyone thought we were down and that we had hired some nobody coach from Iona. He drove onto Campus in a Dodge K car. Had a medicore first year and then went on to win a national championship. His name was Jim Valvano. Herb proved our campus, fans, conference, and facilities can attrack some great talent. Lets face it K built a dynasty out of nothing at Duke. They had never won a national championship and their facilties suck. Cal was not a good choice anyway, he’ll be back in NBA couple of years anyway probably. lets get behind out new coach whoever he is and show everyone what winners we really are.

Just because the next coach isn’t a mega-millionare, doesn’t mean he doesn’t have that potential.

yeah, we got burned- but it’s not like Dean Smith or Coach K were name brands when they got to chapel hill/durham…

That being said, I hope the rumors are wrong- I’d rather take my chances with Calipari then some unknown…

Winthrop’s coach sounds like a good choice though.

My nephew, a sophomore at State, stumbled across people setting up a press table at 9:00 this evening. What does this mean? Is it definitely a done deal that Cal is staying in Memphis?

Just wondering why a national circuit like SI.com would just (as of 9:44pm today) post the story “Packin’ it in? With Barnes out, N.C. State reportedly after Calipari”..
