No News Doesn’t FEEL Like Good News, II

We apologize for any site problems that you may be experiencing or have experienced. What do you expect when this thing was put together to just be a regular old blog and has blown up as it has?

We didn’t feel very good yesterday afternoon. We felt better last night. We feel like shit today.

Today has been painful as a lot of Wolfpackers continue to wait and wait and wait.

* It seems that people in Memphis are feeling a lot of confidence related to the Calipari sitution. People close to Memphis have indicated to us that they think that they are going to retain Cal and that he has been playing NC State from the beginning.

* We are changing courses for a moment on when news is good news. We now think that if we hear anything “official” tonight then the advantage goes to Memphis. We PREDICT (no scoop) that State may be in the counter-offer stage right now. Our primary hope may be that we attach such a high value to Calipari in light of the public nature of the courtship that we offer an osbscene amount of money to him and tell him that the offer is only valid for as long as we are on the telephone together.

* If State is in a position to have to counter and offer more money, don’t let anyone tell you that it “isn’t about money”. As a friend of mine reminded me today, “It is always about money”.

* Dave Glenn has reported that the Memphis players have been told to keep their mouths shut on the situation and they are obeying.

* Memphis came to a contract agreement with football coach, Tommy West today. They obviously are in contract mode. The good news is that an official release regarding Calipari has not yet come.

* We are going to hold back from breaking down “ifs” right now as there will be plenty of time to debrief in the future. It is safe to say that NC State was led to believe that Calipari had much more genuine interest in the position than would be reality if he does not accept the job.

* We apologize for doing this, but this report from Baton Rouge is not going to make you feel any better:

LSU coach John Brady’s name remains high on North Carolina State’s list of potential coaching candidates, according to several media reports.

* For the record, we don’t like Brady as a candidate; especially a candidate placed anywhere near #3 or #4 of the Wolfpack’s list. We’d would much prefer to see NC State take a chance on a Billy Gillispie.

* We continue to worry about any candidate after Calipari on the State list as we’re not convinced that there is a next candidate. We pray to God that Lee Fowler has been engaged in serious talks with the likes of Jay Wright and Gillispie while under the cover of the media glare with Calipari (just as he failed to do during our talks with Barnes).

* Please relax. If State doesn’t land John Calipari, there will be other candidates. We have every reason in the world (other than John Brady) that NC State’s next coach will ultimately be a better fit and produce better long term results than the previous coach.

    here it is:

According to WREG-TV Memphis, John Calipari will remain head coach at the University of Memphis.

According to WREG-TV Memphis, John Calipari will remain head coach at the University of Memphis.
The CBS affiliate broke the news after cutting into a regularly scheduled program.

Calipari had been pursued the past couple of days by NC State, as the Wolfpack turned their attention to him after Texas head coach Rick Barnes signed an extension with the Longhorns.

Calipari met with NC State officials Sunday afternoon and visited Raleigh late Monday night to tour the facilities, but he decided to remain the head coach at Memphis on Tuesday. Terms of his deal were not yet disclosed.

Memphis is 148-59 under Calipari and reached the Oakland Regional final of the NCAA tournament last month before losing to UCLA. Previously he served as head coach at the University of Memphis and of the NBA’s New Jersey Nets.

NC State athletics director Lee Fowler and his search committee will now resume their quest to hire a men’s basketball coach. Potential candidates include Jay Wright (Villanova), John Brady (LSU), Billy Gillispie (Texas A&M), Frank Haith (Miami), and Gregg Marshall (Winthrop).

Tigers AD ‘optimistic’ after meeting with Calipari

University of Memphis athletic director R.C. Johnson has confirmed to The Commercial Appeal that he met with John Calipari this afternoon and described himself as optimistic that the school will be able to retain its basketball coach.
“We had a great meeting,” Johnson said. “It’s a delicate situation, but I’m optimistic. We’re halfway home.”

Multiple sources have told The Commercial Appeal that Calipari was presented with a package that includes a base salary of between $1.5 and $1.7 million annually. Calipari had a base salary of $1.1 millon last season, when he led the Tigers to a 33-4 record and the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament in his sixth season with the Tigers. North Carolina State of the Atlantic Coast Conference has reportedly offered Calipari $2 million per season to become its head basketball coach.

    I can’t describe how f’ing awful I feel right now…
We have all been on a merciless rollercoaster for days now, productivity during the day has been a joke and nights have been nerve racking…

and we get kicked to the curb by Memphis?

this hurts way worse than RB giving us the shrug.

  9. WestCoast 04/11/2006 at 6:46 PM #

It’s just smoke. Of course they’re going to report that in Memphis. They even reported that the coaching staff didn’t come to Raleigh…they are only reporting what they want to hear right now.

Hey West… the damn AD went on record with the media…
what do you need for verification?

  13. O Cain 04/11/2006 at 6:48 PM #

Cal will be first person I ever knew that took a job in Memphis and didn’t take the first oppotunity to get out of there. Everyone I ever knew didn’t like living there. hard to believe he would not want to live in Raleigh instead of Memphis

  15. bohnman009 04/11/2006 at 6:49 PM #

The Charlie Brown kicking the football analogy is quite apt. Does anyone trust Fowler to find the best name on the “B list?”

  18. TNPackFan 04/11/2006 at 6:50 PM #

Where do you see a story that says the AD went on record with the media? I only see “According to WREG-TV Memphis”.

  19. WestCoast 04/11/2006 at 6:50 PM #

Now he has…but only’s saying “we’re halfway home.” Fowler could have said the same thing yesterday.

  20. Omega Wolf 04/11/2006 at 6:50 PM #

bohn, Caulton Tudor on the ACC NOW blog posted it…..

  21. bohnman009 04/11/2006 at 6:50 PM #

If we did lose Cal, then we still have to give Fowler credit for doing all he could.

  22. BladenWolf 04/11/2006 at 6:50 PM #

I’m so pissed off right now I could slap a tarheel cheerleader

  23. bohnman009 04/11/2006 at 6:51 PM #

  24. firenice 04/11/2006 at 6:51 PM #
