No News Doesn’t FEEL Like Good News, II

We apologize for any site problems that you may be experiencing or have experienced. What do you expect when this thing was put together to just be a regular old blog and has blown up as it has?

We didn’t feel very good yesterday afternoon. We felt better last night. We feel like shit today.

Today has been painful as a lot of Wolfpackers continue to wait and wait and wait.

* It seems that people in Memphis are feeling a lot of confidence related to the Calipari sitution. People close to Memphis have indicated to us that they think that they are going to retain Cal and that he has been playing NC State from the beginning.

* We are changing courses for a moment on when news is good news. We now think that if we hear anything “official” tonight then the advantage goes to Memphis. We PREDICT (no scoop) that State may be in the counter-offer stage right now. Our primary hope may be that we attach such a high value to Calipari in light of the public nature of the courtship that we offer an osbscene amount of money to him and tell him that the offer is only valid for as long as we are on the telephone together.

* If State is in a position to have to counter and offer more money, don’t let anyone tell you that it “isn’t about money”. As a friend of mine reminded me today, “It is always about money”.

* Dave Glenn has reported that the Memphis players have been told to keep their mouths shut on the situation and they are obeying.

* Memphis came to a contract agreement with football coach, Tommy West today. They obviously are in contract mode. The good news is that an official release regarding Calipari has not yet come.

* We are going to hold back from breaking down “ifs” right now as there will be plenty of time to debrief in the future. It is safe to say that NC State was led to believe that Calipari had much more genuine interest in the position than would be reality if he does not accept the job.

* We apologize for doing this, but this report from Baton Rouge is not going to make you feel any better:

LSU coach John Brady’s name remains high on North Carolina State’s list of potential coaching candidates, according to several media reports.

* For the record, we don’t like Brady as a candidate; especially a candidate placed anywhere near #3 or #4 of the Wolfpack’s list. We’d would much prefer to see NC State take a chance on a Billy Gillispie.

* We continue to worry about any candidate after Calipari on the State list as we’re not convinced that there is a next candidate. We pray to God that Lee Fowler has been engaged in serious talks with the likes of Jay Wright and Gillispie while under the cover of the media glare with Calipari (just as he failed to do during our talks with Barnes).

* Please relax. If State doesn’t land John Calipari, there will be other candidates. We have every reason in the world (other than John Brady) that NC State’s next coach will ultimately be a better fit and produce better long term results than the previous coach.

    Painful to read.

Well at the very least we can get LSU to give Brady a big raise out of our interest. If your a coach and you need a raise, call NC State.

It’s Calipari until something official is announced. But Brady is a no way situation. This could be the most embarrassing situation in a long time around here if Calipari has been playing us.

Hate to say it, but guys, it’s not about the money. In the past 9 years, Cal has pocketed $21 million from Memphis and the NJ Nets. Over the next 3 years, he’s set to make $7 million from Memphis in salary and a maturing annuity. So it’s not about $2.5 million at NC State vs. $1.7 million at Memphis.

I’ve watched him for years, and I can tell you his ego is usually his primary motivator. In this case I’d say it’s either:
    1) Not feeling the love at Memphis, or
    2) The “respect” of coaching in the ACC vs. the “king of the hill” in Memphis.

    I’d guess that he’s stuck on #2.

I think everyone is getting WAY too anxious. From all indications he received an offer from Memphis only today, correct? He needs time to first decide on which offer he will accept (and possibly time for counteroffers to go back and forth). Regardless… once he decides, he needs time to contact/gather his current players to let them know, and time to notify recruits, etc. BEFORE it hits the media. While we want to know immediately, the fact of the matter is that we will NOT know immediately. The first we hear of it will NOT be an announcement from either school… it will be a leak from somewhere (regardless of the decision). NC State is NOT going to announce it as soon as he notifies them. Memphis is NOT going to announce anything until the ink has dried on any new contract he might get.

    So… calm down guys…

i cant believe this is happening!!!

At some point we can’t resort to feeling like we’re going to get shit on. We want to win, and win big, in all aspects of State athletics. No news is good news right now. Fowler is doing his thing, the media is doing the same thing we’re doing (guessing), and we will get Cal. If it’s about ego, then having one in Conf. USA doesn’t mean anything. Having an ego in the ACC is entirely different. Stay positive, keep the hope alive!!!!

  21. NY Statefan 04/11/2006 at 5:14 PM #

arrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh!! Stop telling people to stay positive. How can we not be expecting the worst?

  22. Jeremy Hyatt 04/11/2006 at 5:14 PM #

Another example in 16 years’ worth of examples, too numerous to remember, thank God for that, of the fact that the worst-case scenario is inevitably the only scenario for the Wolfpack. Make bank on it. I’d bet on them except half the time I cannot foresee the *absolute* worst case scenario. I always think up *less bad* scenarios to worry about, only to be disappointed nevertheless.
