Memphis Could Have Avoided This Mess

In most cases if John Calipari were to stay quiet for this long, someone might want to shove a cell phone under his nose to see if he showed any signs of life.

This is different. There can be only two reasons why he has maintained public silence for such a long period:

1) He’s seriously considering becoming the head coach at NC State, but it’s a tough decision because of the great team he’d be leaving behind;

2) He’s torturing the Memphis administration with a long wait because certain people were foolish enough to believe he couldn’t/wouldn’t leave for another job.

The Gen Parts plane has nothing to do with this. I talked to my source, and he laughed. Completely coincidental. The Sloans are Duke suporters.

    Basketball recruits living in limbo
    Tuesday, April 11, 2006
    BY MIKE HELFGOT
    For the Star-Ledger

The way Bob Farrell sees it, Christian Brothers Academy senior Dan Werner should not have been forced into this predicament.

Farrell, the head coach at Seton Hall Prep in West Orange and one of the state’s most respected basketball figures, is no fan of college basketball’s early signing period, which Werner thought he was taking advantage of last November when he signed a national letter of intent to attend North Carolina State.

Werner, a 6-7 forward who was named State Player of the Year by The Star-Ledger this past season, learned the hard way recently that a lot can change from November to April.

Rutgers replaced head coach Gary Waters with Fred Hill Jr. in that time. Seton Hall followed suit shortly thereafter, replacing Louis Orr with Bobby Gonzalez. Forty other Division 1 schools also have different head coaches than they did at the start of the 2005-06 season.

And as the second period in which recruits can sign letters of intent begins tomorrow, North Carolina State has no coach.

Herb Sendek left the Wolfpack to take the job at Arizona State on April 1 and is expected to take along his entire staff — the staff that recruited Werner as well as 6-7 forward Dennis Horner, a Second Team All-State pick from Holy Spirit in Absecon this past season, and Brandon Costner, the North Carolina State freshman and 2005 Star-Ledger State Player of the Year at Seton Hall Prep.

Werner and Horner are legally bound to uphold the letters they signed. They can ask for a release that would most likely be granted, but not until North Carolina State hires a new coach.

Werner’s father, Ron, said he was told by a North Carolina State official that an announcement should come this week, but until then no other school is allowed to contact Dan Werner or Horner, and the future they thought they were securing in November will remain up in the air. According to yesterday’s Raleigh News & Observer, Memphis coach John Calipari, Marquette’s Tom Crean, LSU’s John Brady, Virginia Commonwealth’s Jeff Capel and Notre Dame’s Mike Brey have been reported to be among North Carolina State’s many candidates.

“I have always been a believer that kids shouldn’t sign until the last possible moment,” Farrell said. “I wish they’d push it back until June of their senior year. There’s so much movement on the college level. One move means two moves means four moves means eight moves.

“I’d rather see that part of it change, where kids aren’t forced to make the choice in April or November. Let’s make sure everything is the way they thought it was going to be. People say that’s why you make the decision based on the school and not the coach, but I think that’s a little naive. They study the places they want to go, they know where they will fit in and they saw themselves fitting in at N.C. State under Herb Sendek.”

Keon Lawrence, a First Team All-State guard at Weequahic High in Newark who signed in November with Missouri, also is affected by a coaching change, but he is happy with Missouri’s hiring of Mike Anderson to replace Quin Snyder because the up-tempo attack Anderson successfully employed at Alabama-Birmingham suits Lawrence’s game. Lawrence said he is eligible and excited for his freshman season at Missouri.

Werner, though, might not be as fortunate. He thrived in a disciplined offense at the Lincroft school and is concerned because Sendek’s style — a disciplined system with characteristics of the Princeton offense — is not used by many coaches.

“The only thing we can do right now is wait and see who they hire,” Ron Werner said. “Hopefully it’s going to be someone who runs a similar offense and things will work out.”

Farrell says the CBA standout, who averaged 21 points and 11 rebounds and shot 58 percent from the field and 41 percent from 3-point range as a senior, will thrive in any system.

“He is a great player. He can find his niche and do well wherever he goes,” Farrell said. “These things usually work out. This situation is a little different because North Carolina State has a style of play not too many coaches run, but I’m sure things will work out for him.”

Costner, who appeared in North Carolina State’s first five games this past season before sustaining a season-ending stress fracture in his leg, received a medical redshirt and has four years of eligibility remaining.

“After the dust is settled, we’ll sit down with the new coach and see what his philosophy is,” said Tony Costner, Brandon’s father. “Right now he’s not thinking of doing anything but staying at North Carolina State.”

JVg, Brackman is also declaring for the draft.

This has gotten out of control. Of course I will be elated if we get him in a few days – but I honestly don’t think we should give him that long to decide…..

  15. Jeremy Hyatt 04/11/2006 at 4:28 PM #

he will probably make as much as Sendek when he is drafted then get sent to the development league… Ced , with Coach Calipari you could actually develop your post moves which suck at the moment? he could make you a star, hang on , don’t sign anything!!!
