Bobby Gonzalez was all the rage a couple of years ago when he was leading his Manhattan Jaspers to a Sweet 16 appearance (ironically during their appearance in the RBC Center). Two years ago, it was rumored that Gonzalez was going to land in the ACC at the University of Miami, but the Hurricanes ended up pulling the surprise hiring of Frank Haith.
Today, Gonzalez was “called up to the big time” as he was hired as the next head coach at Seton Hall.
Anyone who would dare consider one-hit wonder, Jim Laranaga for the NC State job may want to take a look at the following:
Larranaga withdrew from consideration, and Seton Hall on Thursday called the other candidates to say the school was going in another direction — Gonzalez’s direction.
That’s code for “Seton Hall didn’t want Laranaga”.
Additionally, Greg Doyel added the following to the NC State coaching rumor mill:
North Carolina State: The Wolfpack have put together a package in the neighborhood of $2.2 million annually to entice Texas coach Rick Barnes. No word on Barnes’ response, though his agent is believed to be smiling like a Cheshire cat as he prepares to call Barnes’ boss at Texas for a raise.
Meanwhile … N.C. State also has inquired about George Washington’s Karl Hobbs and LSU’s John Brady. Regarding Hobbs, N.C. State discovered the same thing that helped stymie Cincinnati: Hobbs has an unusually large buyout clause at GW, which makes hiring him fiscally problematic. The Wolfpack won’t pay $2.2 million for Hobbs. Good thinking.
Is this a joke?
We may not pursue John Calipari because some people have concerns about his ethics but we will consider pursuing John Brady?
We will refrain from any/many comments on this until we know more.
