Lavin Turns Down NC State (Update 4:50 pm)

Headline on ESPN.com

“Lavin will stay in broadcasting; turns down NC State”

StateFansNation comments on Monday:

If NC State really did offer the job to Lavin, then the offer should have been pulled the moment The Sporting News reported it on Friday night. Everyone knows that the leak came from Lavin’s side. Why are we even speaking to someone that did this to us? Why is all of this coming out on Monday? Did nobody work this weekend? Was the weather at Fowler’s lake house too nice to worry with the coaching search and trying to nail down these terms and conditions?

On Sunday AND Monday we suggested that, in addition to pulling the offer from Lavin, NC State should have immediately issued a press statement dis-crediting the story and pronouncing that it was completely false and Steve Lavin has never had an offer from NC State.

Q: What did Lee Fowler do, instead?

A: Fowler continued to let his personal friend (Lavin) fester for a full week and publicly embarass NC State LEE FOWLER (again) in the national media.

What did we tell you on Monday about the report that Lavin was “close to accepting the job except for some specific terms and conditions”?

We are a little fearful that this information is a set-up for NC State to save face in a scenario where Lavin turns down the job. If the afternoon rumor that Lavin is NOT the guy holds up, then the NC State spin-machine will most definitely be looking to blame something outside of their control as the reason why the deal didn’t work with Lavin. It would never cross their mind – or anyone at NC State’s – that they just f’d up by chasing the wrong guy, for the wrong reasons, in the wrong way.

Any coach would accept the NC State job contingent on coming to agreement on “certain terms and conditions”!! In principal why wouldn’t Lee Fowler privately pull the offer from Lavin immediately upon Lavin breaking the agreement not to share information in the press about the job?

This could be a case where the deal is done with John Beilein and Steve Lavin is backing away from the process. If true, it is good news. But, it is also unacceptable that NC State is in this public position with a broadcaster that isn’t even a basketball coach on Wednesday, April 26th when Lee Fowler knew of Arizona State’s interest in Herb Sendek over thirty days ago. The telephones up at Fowler’s Lake house, where he has spent more time than in Raleigh in recent weeks, must have a hard time connecting to the rest of the world.

We don’t care if the real truth is that NC State chose John Beilein over Steve Lavin. Don’t know, and don’t care. That is inconsequential to the fact that Fowler unnecessarily put NC State in another comprimising public position in this search.

Please don’t misread any of our comments into frustration about missing on Steve Lavin. SFN was obviously struggling with the Lavin candidacy since its origin. (Need we take you all the way back to April 7th?) We are relieved by the outcome related to Lavin, although disappointed in the execution of how the results came to light. In fact, Lee Fowler’s simple interest in Lavin just puts another nail in Jed’s coffin at NC State.

NC State’s search can end successfully (Beilein) without having been executed competently. The two can be relatively exclusive of each other.

But, leaders get paid to make good decisions; and Lee FOWLER’s decisions are what created this public “third strike” through gross incompetence of (1) originally choosing to pursue someone as unqualified as Steve Lavin, and (2) continuing to talk to Lavin despite the obvious and significant risks once Lavin leaked the confirmation of our talks to the media. There is nobody, nowhere, no way to blame for this fiasco other than Fowler for allowing it to unravel in this manner.

Additionally, how was this allowed to go on for at least a frigging week? What the hell did Lavin need to think about? work on? get through? Why has NC State allowed Lavin (or anyone) to mull over a job for a friggin week? Either you want it, or you don’t. Jay Bilas alluded to Fowler’s poor execution across many facets of the search in his interview with 610 WFNZ on Tuesday morning, and this Lavin situation is the specific example of all of Bilas’ points – lack of strategy, tardiness, moving too slowly, not valuing/marketing the job effectively.

SFN is excited about the prospects of John Beilein coaching at NC State – more excited than we think many would have expected of us. We hope that the Lavin situation means that Beilein is locked up and ready to roll. We should know very, very soon.

In the meantime, we’ll share a picture that came our way last week via email from a friggin Rhode Island undergraduate to memorialize the national perception of Lee Fowler’s coaching search:

Get read to be the butt of more jokes from the media about how no one wants to be the coach of the Pack.

  2. KVegasWolf 04/26/2006 at 4:44 PM #

You guys hit the nail on the head as usual. Barnes and Cal publicly rejecting us I can take….Lavin I can’t.

    Best photochop ever.

  3. NCSU4LIFE 04/26/2006 at 4:46 PM #

I could care less what the media says. We have a new coach. A fresh start and Herb is gone. We should all celebrate.

  4. StateRed44 04/26/2006 at 4:47 PM #

agree completely…IF LF has not nailed down Beilein and we are publicly eliminated again….he should be immediately terminated and Oblinger should plead for Les to step in complete the process with hismself, AN AGENT, and Purcell. This is a joke!

  5. WP 01 04/26/2006 at 4:47 PM #

More jokes from the media? I can’t wait to read another article suggesting our next coach will be Clay Aiken, Dr. Phil, or Madonna. Or that NCSU’s campus will be taken over by dragons and our basketball program will cease to exist. It’s neat being the bud of all jokes. Thanks Lee!

Lee should have been fired 5 years ago…along with HS

  7. AppraisalWOLF 04/26/2006 at 4:48 PM #

I am really looking forward to the de-brief. I will go ahead and guess that the conclusion will be that Lee Fowler must be shot.

  8. Rochester 04/26/2006 at 4:49 PM #

All I can say is I’m glad he’s out of the picture, even if it was ugly. He should never have been considered in the first place. What a relief. Herb may have frustrated us at times, but the guy was a class act. I would not want to follow him up with a slick sleazeball like Lavin.

Let’s get the Beilein deal done and get on with our lives. If he’s really the guy, I think he can do a good job. WVa didn’t bend over and take it the last couple years when they played the powers of the Big East. They won their fair share of those games. You can’t say the same for us in the ACC.

And here’s hoping Whit runs the table in the A-10 next year and puts himself in a great position to be the guy the next time around.

  9. nav 04/26/2006 at 4:52 PM #

I never thought I would see the day NC State gets turned down by a bum that got fired from his last school, has not coached in 3 yrs, and cannot get an offer to coach from any other school.

  10. Dan 04/26/2006 at 4:53 PM #

I agree with SFN. Fowler needs to account for this fiasco.

Additionally, the reasoning SFN used to discredit the Whit talk in “Why Now” is just as valid for Beilein. Its pretty obvious this guy was interested from the get go. Why did it take two weeks to get here?

I honestly expect Fowler to be somewhere else by the start of the Fall semester.

If Beilein is the coach, as FANS of NCState, we owe him support for a certain time period. While he wouldn’t have been my first choice, his coaching ability is very well-respected. Personally, I find the Princeton offense boring, BUT what is worse is that I find the inability to adjust during the game (like Sendek) is MADDENING! If he knows how and when to use a timeout that will be an improvement! If he realizes that rebounding is actually part of the game, then that will be an improvement. From all indications that I have seen from his teams, he can actually coach DURING the damn game!

All of these factors are an improvement. If you are a TRUE NCSU fan, then you owe the coach your support for a certain time period (3 years minimum). After that, if your are not happy, you have the right to voice your displeasure. In the meantime, if you can’t support the coach, you are not a true fan.

LF should be seated beside the begger above with a sign too.

  13. pman27 04/26/2006 at 4:54 PM #

Fowler has not been public with any part of the coaching search, so why would he go public to clarify no offer was extended? Staying private is taking the high road, going public would not be viewed well by other coaches and programs. It would basically be allowing the media to bait us out and its lowering ourselves to the media’s level.

That being said, we definitely have some image repair to do. However, the national media has chosen to smear us and its hard to fight the media and look good.

  14. FullMoonRising 04/26/2006 at 4:56 PM #

    This is shameful.

I feel like the ugly guy at the bar that hits on all the hot girls, and everyone but the ugly guy knows he has no chance in hell of any quality.

I understand from some UNC friends that Baddour (sp?) was the ONLY one that did NOT get a standing Ovation at the Rams club sports celebration last night. Obviously the Duke guy A.. is feeling the heat…Maybe there needs to be a PURGE of ALL ACC AD’s within a 25 mile radius of RDU….

MF plane is current on the ground in Nevada, MO…apparently waiting for the storm to clear…should have taken off earlier…you DON’T suppose it could make a side trip to Morgantown on the way back…looks like it would not be too much out of the way.

That way JB could get out of town prior to the WVU fans going ballistic…

Thanks SFN for this blog and your insight…looking forward to the REAL story behind the last 3 plus weeks as well as your confirmation of the $$’s and the conditions…

I’m behind JB for a couple of seasons…he may not be the first choice, but he certainly is NOT the worst…

An executive summary of my $2.0 Million SAVINGS on JB vs RB will be posted if there enough demand and the Administrator lets it on.

Anyone set up a website to get rid of LF?

Thanks again…hope this is NOT a smoke screen…

  16. Dan 04/26/2006 at 4:57 PM #

Giving the fans the truth is not embarassing to NC State. It would be embarassing to Lee Fowler. If we do not know the truth, how can we rest easy the next time we need a coach?

Say, for some unforeseen reason, Chuck leaves. Does anyone want Fowler leading that search?

  17. JT 04/26/2006 at 4:57 PM #

Thank God. Praise Allah. In spite of his apparent efforts, I think Fowler’s gonna land a quality coach. I hope it’s Beilein.

  18. beowolf 04/26/2006 at 4:59 PM #

    *DAN, what a frightful prospect.*

  19. newt 04/26/2006 at 4:59 PM #

Seems to me the focus switched immediately to B-line the moment that the Sporting News reported the Lavin offer.

D Glenn himself reported that both seemed to have offers. All speculation since last Friday has been that we were talking to both and in fact favoring B-line.

Did we really want to release a statement and get into a pissing match with Lavin in the press?

I doubt many people outside of State fans and some obsessed rivals have noticed much of this Lavin stuff, especially on a national scale.

  20. eyedoc 04/26/2006 at 4:59 PM #

Holy crow. We asked the prettiest girl in school to the prom, and she said no thanks. Then we asked the most popular girl, and she said no. Then we asked the sleaziest, and even she said no. At some point the other folks start to think you must be gay, or smell bad, or something. I’m glad Lavin is not coming to our school, because he would have basically undone all the hard work we’ve done to reestablish our honor as a university, from an ethics standpoint. It just should have come from us, not him.

It looks like B-line is the guy, (as impossible as it is to have this actually “look’ like anything predictable). Fine. Let’s get him, announce it, and get busy. If not, hire Whit/Marshall or unkown candidate numr 26 and get on with the program!

Oh, yeah, by the way, Jed needs to load up the truck and move to Beverly…Hills that is!

  21. Dan 04/26/2006 at 5:01 PM #

    “what a frightful prospect”

Yeah, I cant imagine anything more horrible. That is why we have to know the truth. Its why sites like this are adamant about finding out what happened.

  22. redfred2 04/26/2006 at 5:02 PM #

Can anyone believe that we are even discussing rejection from the likes of Steve Lavin? This s*t has got to end, and end soon. Take whoever immediately, it doesn’t matter now. This is doing nothing but perpetuating the loosing image already put out there by LF and the of those in charge.

  23. beowolf 04/26/2006 at 5:08 PM #

I guess I don’t care to be embarrassed by being turned down by Lavin. After Barnes and the apparent inability to court the likes of Whitt and Marshall and the spinelessness in seeking Haith (whom I wasn’t that interested in anyway), it was more a matter of us dodging bullets. One of ’em got us.

That’s a pretty dismal read on it, I know. Actually I am somewhat hopeful with Beilien, but I’m not excited.

  24. hoop 04/26/2006 at 5:09 PM #

That’s it. I’m rescinding my long-standing support for Lee Fowler. We got turned down by a coach nobody wanted? In addition to the obvious embarrassment this causes us (yes US, and not just Fowler), the coaching search is now an official train-wreck.

The other thing this shows is that Lavin has no confidence in his ability to coach whatsoever.

  25. Heels Perspective 04/26/2006 at 5:09 PM #

I certainly would NOT have wanted a Lavin at UNC because you know he’d cut and run if things weren’t going very well or was doing well and “something better” came along. State is better off without him. Beilein MIGHT be an improvement over Herb, but not much.

I think it would be great if Derek was given the opportunity. That could backfire as well, but what a great story if he were to really succeed!!
