Calipari Playing the Media…again and again

If you’ve noticed, we’re not looking to marinade in misery today. The sun came up just like expected and it is time to be smart, be excited, and move on.

BUT, this little diddy from ESPN is too (insert adjective here) to ignore:

I’m kind of impressed with John Calipari’s loyalty to his Memphis assistants, which is reportedly the reason he turned down a sweet offer to jump to NC State, despite … well, let’s review:

• Better conference
• Better program “brand”
• Much more money

The fact is: Calipari will never have a better situation at Memphis than this past season — Top 5 team, conference champ, NCAA Tournament No. 1 seed. Yet he was still marginalized as managing a second-tier program.

(Curious why NC State got hung up on compensating Cal’s assistants. When you’re making a multimillion dollar play for a big-name coach, isn’t the rest just details?)

I’m ‘curious’ about it as well. Particularly curious because I don’t believe it in the slightest.

Calipari is now leaking this stuff to the media to make himself look good knowing that NC State doesn’t have the guts to call him a liar in public in the middle of a coaching search. (Not that State would ever engage in such a public feud, anyway).

I’m sure that if the good folks who run this website hear anything to back-up Cal’s story then they will let you know. I’m also sure that we won’t.

This one is so ridiculous that that I can’t even bring myself to comment on it. God knows that Andy Katz has got to be one of the biggest morons in the world. Do you think that he washes Cal’s feet for him when he snaps his fingers, too?

This will be the last comments regarding Calipari. Moving on!

Doyel is an idiot. He did this same kind of crap when he was at the charlotte observer and should not be relied upon for any kind of information that doesn’t relate in some way to Carolina.

Doyel is also an opportunist. He moved on from Charlotte when he had the chance and in my mind was one of the biggest reasons why the Charlotte Observer has one of the worst sports sections of any metro newspaper in the country. Guys, I’m not making that one up either. Ask anyone in newspapers, especially sports, and they will tell the the observer’s sports section is a joke full of lazy reporters who think that the story hasn’t been broken until they write about it.

Doyel is a perfect example of the problem with sports coverage as it relates to newspapers and mass media in general. All the folks in these fields either went to Michigan, Syracuse or North Carolina. It’s all part of a big club and Doyel will never write ANYTHING positive about N.C. State or anyone that’s not carolina.

dabig, I agree Doyle is a tool. He’s always on our case. I’d look for cover if said anything good about State b/c he’d be setting us up for a great rip on us.

I just hope that ‘offical’ rumors in this search goes into a deep, deep freeze. Way too public. Did anyone know what was going on about the IU hire? Or, Herb hire as well.

I think that would be better for everyone – fans included. I cannot take any more of these Calipari adventures.

State offered around $2 mil, he stayed for $1.5-$1.7
My question is why didn’t Cal insist on the difference be split among his assistants?
Like its been said, he NEVER intended to come.
    What a tool.

What’s more I honestly believe that Fowler knew Cal was a fraud and that’s why he ignored the overtures last week.
My guess is that he was overruled by the Chancellor and Murphy thus their involvement.

Here’s the thing about lying, ….uh, leaking to the media.

At some point State will hire a Coach. That coach will be paid handsomely. Due to the “high” major status of this conference. He will need the highest quality assistant coachs. He will bring his guys or hire new. He will expect that they be paid well, so as to focus on the job at hand.

Cal’s ridiculous comments will be known as what they are.

By the way I had a Tar-hole co-worker tell me last year that Chuck’s staff was the highest paid. Any truth? If so, there goes that argument.

Calipari is a lying sack of shit.

I’m more worried that, if the ESPN report is true, the George Mason guy is in the picture. If we hire him, I’ll just hang it up. That’s it.

site admin at it again ?

    erased again 🙁

    am I doing something wrong?
…just trying to “suggest” looking at other places for successful D-1 coachs

Amato does indeed have the highest paid coaching staff in the NCAA, that’s widely known. That was one of the many reasons I thought Cal would come, because his assistants were reportedly underpaid.

Hey, somebody left the Calamari in the fryer too long! This guy is sounding more and more like a complete idiot…do you really think people are buy this…I don’t think so! I think it’s more of an attack on him as opposed to an attack on the Wolfpack…let the guy go…he obviously is SCARED…and who cares he coaches at memphis…r u kidding me…he might be as smart as the players he recruits, but I doubt it.

  13. Packattack 04/12/2006 at 10:44 PM #

We all wanted Calimari and if he had a reversal of fortune today everyone of us would blow a wad so lets forget about him and the bashing and focus on the future of Wolfpack hoops.

Lavin did have like 5 Sweet 16’s in a row ….

    What LeeF said.

Oh and that is the last time I try tracking airplanes; our optimism there may have precipicated the degree of letdown.

I agree with letting Lee do his job, if we do actually go after another big name (Wright) I hope we have learned from our mistakes and find a way to not let it play out in the media.

Greg Doyel needs a beat-down. How can one guy continuously write such obvious State-hate and get away with it?

I’d love to bitch-slap that pussy-boy beard off of his face.

The sad part of this is I thought Calipari could be a great coach here. But we were dealing in good faith with someone who has shown himself to be less than honorable and a coward too! In the end we were lucky not to secure his services as he would only have proven himself to be a perennial problem.

I still retain faith that our admin will get it right eventually but please don’t waste anymore time considering the likes of Brady, Larranaga etc. Focus on the up-and-comers, under say 50 years of age, and we can still unite this fanbase and take on the challenges that lie ahead.
